Omg look at that pitchfork! Where is this? Do you think you got them all?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That is pretty neat Phyllis, I bet it is not any harder than Nandina, good for you brave girls.
Josephine.

LOL that is part of my back yard and no we didn't get all of them ..we worked on just one small area ...figured starting in one spot and working there in sections would be best

I'll post a few pictures here showing you the back part where the bamboo roots are.

ok this one I marked where we worked LOL it spanned the whole back part above the terrace and now is just roots that we turned over with the back hoe and need to get the rest of them out.
but then we did take a break and go to blue moon for my first time...hehehehe

Pray tell ... where is the Blue Moon ... the local neighborhood tavern? lol
Phyllis do you have pictures of the bamboo trees? I might want you give me some of those shoots. I got these two huge half barrels that I could plant them in to shade my Hostas.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

well this is what it once looked like and it is the running type so it has to be contained unless you want it to take over...so your barrels might do the trick .......and blue moon gardens is where we went LOL

Oh man, I'm looking goood! LOL

It really is a perfect place for herbs and veggies, once the roots are gone. Let me know if you and DH try to tackle it again on a Monday.

Oooo Sylvia, Blue Moon is my favorite garden center. We need to get you there. I'll bet if you had to dig bamboo out, you'd never want to see it again.lol

I will never complain about weeds again. I'm going to go browse through medicine cabinet now.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

wow - great work on there! Let us know in a thread if you are going to go at it again!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

well I can tell ya I will be working on it lil by lil any day and everyday I can weather permitting and hopefully we will get a tiller to work on it too.

I soaked in the tub for a while tonight in hopes of not being sore tomorrow LOL

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Phyllis, take an aspiring and call me in the morning!

Good going Ladies! I will join the cheering section (from afar). Truely, it is good to show that and hopefully discourage others from making that gardening mistake. Mibus ~ I'm sorry you have to clean up behind someone else. Bamboo can be a booger! I think I'll stick with fencing but I do have a fork that resembles that one ~ LOL

Missouri City, TX

Great start on a HUGE project.

Had a neighbor in LA County that needed to remove a single palm - trunk was about 4 feet across, but when he got under it, the roots went everywhere and the crater was over 8 ft wide and about the same depth when he quit trying to get the rest. Took him a couple of weeks working evenings to get it out - borrowed almost every cutting tool and shovel I had.

I have a spading fork with one missing tine from that project, so familiar with forks with bent tines.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL Jo I slept all through the night even through the wind noise LOL

Thanks for cheering y'all know IF ya ever get bored ....hahahahahaha....there is still the whole area as seen in the pictures above that looks bare but actually is where it was that needs to be done or dug or whatever ya want to call it ...it only goes back as far as the little line of trees but the property goes all the way back to the small group of pines in the back ...LOL

Phyllis I love to have some of that bambo...its very pretty and shady.. I need a lot of shoots... those barrels ARE HUGE! Mitch you remember the barrels out front that had the Cannas in them?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

One little root Sylvia will take a whole barrel and run into the ground in no time. If you want them - go for it I love the look myself in the right place, just be careful and only plant one or two roots in each barrel and they will grow fast.

Dallas, TX

How Fast? I need shade in a hurry!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

growing tall is slower then growing wide in bamboo - or so I find a least.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

these are running bamboo so they send out runners but I can find ones that have shoots already starting to hang on for ya. but If Mitch says no more then 2 to a pot then that is all I will save (keep in mind though I know I will not get it all out this year)

http://davesgarden.com/nl.php?date=2008-02-26 Hey ~ in the DG newsletter, you made forum photo of the day! Way to go!!!

MIBUS....now your in trouble. lol

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Yep - If you post over in the trade forum people will pay you money for the roots... or get a classified add and they will eat it up - they love that type of thing.

Dallas, TX

Mitch before you go setting her up in a Bamboo business, please let me get mine :)

Dallas, TX

Mitch please let me get mine first! lol

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

lol - will do, but you could really sell those roots... in fact Sylvia might want to sell them on her site :-) just a thought...

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Meaning after she gets hers for her yard first!

Dallas, TX

Mitch ... stop while you are ahead. lol you are getting in deeper and deeper. LOL

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

:-0 sorry... trying to help you both find the golden needle in the hay stack.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ROFL Never even thought of photo of the day

your not in trouble Mitch and Sylvia you know you will get roots not a problem I already told ya I would save ya some and I keep my word.

I never thought about posting them on the trade or in an ad........gonna have to put my brain to work after sitting on the bus all day and make up something to post.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Thank you :-)

really they would do good over there - just something to think about, someone buying those roots might make faster work of digging them up - maybe?

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok but I have no idea what to say for cost I"m not good at that I always had trouble telling someone what it would cost for me to do sewing for them or when I make stained glass pieces ....

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Well 9 bucks for shipping and handling and look over on ebay to see the prices bamboo is going for.. they will want to know what bamboo it is so lets get that atarted first and then look on the web for the roots and their prices. You might be suprised...

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok I already know what it is just have to ump over to bamboo crafts and get the name again but while I have you checking in here pop over to the iris forum and look at the list I have there LouC says to check with you as to what you had compared to my want list from my g-mas list

How about a sign on the side of the road...."$5 all you can dig"

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Well it is
Phyllostachys aurea
and on ebay it roots are going for 7.99 then the shipping cost

but Cocoa that is an idea too if DH will go for it LOL

I think you just found a new job, Phyllostachys aurea dealer!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

hahahaha no no I want to get rid of it not keep growing it LOL

Are you sure? "Phyllis' Phyllostachys" has a nice ring to it! LOL
