Uploading jpeg files

Hey Dave! I’ve noticed a weird little quirk up-loading some photos. It’s not a big deal but it took me awhile to figure it out why it was happening. When trying to upload a picture onto the database… if there is a picture already there …. And the jpeg I’m loading is named the same as the one that’s already there … It just loads the same (already loaded) picture again. I first noticed this when I was trying to put a jpeg on the borage entry. I think it was Joy that already put a picture in and I kept up-loading hers again. It wouldn’t take the borage.jpg file from me.

Try changing your file name to borage2 or something loke that and you will be able to load it.

I just looked at Borage again and your photo is there but the first of mine is missing. It still reads as being copyright to me but that is defineately your photo!

Yes, this is the only known bug in the Plants Database. I really need to fix this one. It's getting fairly high on my priority list, especially now that so many people are posting so many new pictures to the PDB.

That's funny. I remember I gave up on the borage photo and never did get it loaded. That's mine alright.... but it's distorted. You can delete it zany - I don't think I can if it's copyrighted to you.

I'll go delete it so folks won't think I am trying to take credit for your pics! Then you might try to add it again and see if it works without distorting it. :}

Done! Now you can try again! From what i saw on the distorted version it is a better picture of the whole plant than mine was so I hope this works!

Well ... I don't have that borage picture on my hard drive anymore. I'll have to copy it off my home page.

Dave - I just saw another picture of mine (feverfew) copyrighted to Joy! I think I had the same trouble trying to upload it as the borage. When that happened...my pictures must have canceled theirs out. I didn't notice that when I loaded it though.

Thank you so much for bearing with me on this and being so understanding. This was a big bug in the database that I really needed to fix for a long time.

Tonight I finally finished it. Now, when you upload a filename, to avoid any name clashes, it changes the name of the file (on my server) to a random name, that looks like this:

original-filename_08-26-2001_942.jpg

The date is changed to make it whatever day you're uploading the picture on, and the last 3 digits are assigned randomly. This gives us about a 1 in a billion chance of getting a duplicate posting (and the duplicate would have to occur on the same day, with the same original filename, and the random number of 1 to 1000 would have to be selected two times in a row!!

Thanks again for bearing with me as I fix this. Hopefully nobody will have this problem again.
