Problems with hyper-links

Norfolk, VA

Is anyone else having a problem today? On 5 different occasions this morning I have clicked a link in a thread and it has shut down my computer. I am not having this problem any where else on the web, only here on DG. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Also, Dg seems to be running VERY slow today. Trying to open pages is taking forever.....some open as blank pages and others don't open at all.

I haven't had problems with links, but enlarging thumbnail pictures is taking forever...

Norfolk, VA

yep, that too.....some of them won't load at all.......hope someone knows what is causing this.

I try to enlarge a thumbnail & it takes forever & then comes up & says 'Done' but I just get a blank page. Very frustrating.

I think it may have something to do with the server the pictures are on. Mondays are a report-generating day, which can make everything a little sluggish - but I've had similar problems with pictures, so I think it may be more than just the Monday slowdown ;o)

Terry, do you know what would cause the hyper-links to shut down my computer?

Beckie, that one is beyond me, and there are so many possibilities (different browsers, different settings, different software running, etc.) that we can't easily troubleshoot that sort of issue, unless we receive several reports and can find the commonalities among the members reporting it.

Without having more reports to go by, I can only recommend trying the Computer Talk forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/computer/all/

Thank you Terry, I'll go over there and see if someone can help. I can say though, that it is only happening here on DG which seems odd because I normally do not have any problems here other than the occasional slow down.......hopefully it is just a glitch and will resolve itself soon!

Terry, I tried your link to the computer forum.........my computer froze and I had to restart it again!! I have posted my question in computer talk, waiting to see what they say..

On the Plant Identification forum the thumbnails began disappearing a couple of days ago. First a few, then all. No enlargements either. The problem seems to be widespread on DG. My computer has no problems elsewhere.

Can you see the Plant ID forum thumbnails now? If not, have you tried rebooting? (I see them fine, I can enlarge them without any problems, albeit a few are a little slow to load.)

I began to get the drift that, while this may be a problem on my computer, it is not widespread elsewhere. I have a Mac using Firefox. So,I tried Internet Explorer on my Virtual PC program. Everything works fine, can see all thumbs. I will simply use it from now on.

You might try giving your Firefox a smack upside the head (read: reboot your machine ;o) I use Mozilla FF on my pc - it's my main browser - and it seems lately that its most recent updated versions are occasionally problematic. (More so than in the past.) But rebooting typically helps them sort out whatever was acting up.

Thanks for the guidance. Firefox problem cleared up on its own. However, in the meantime I found my old, long defunked Internet Explorer for Mac opens this website quite well, and I lsuspect more dependably than Firefox. So, I will use it rather than the IE 6 on my Virtual PC (very slow).

I've rebooted mine several times and use IE and still can't use hyper links

I have a theory that it's a popup blocker problem. Most sites open links in the same window rather than popping up a new one, but here they open in a new window. Because of that, if your popup blocker is working overtime, it might appear that it's a DG problem since DG may be the only site you visit regularly that handles links that way. Here's a test...I'd post a link but it probably wouldn't work! LOL So I'll give you directions instead. Go to "www.toptropicals.com" (leave out the quotes...I just put those in so the system won't interpret it as a link) Once you're there, click on the link that says new arrivals (near the upper right corner of the screen). This link should work fine since it opens in the same window. Then click on the name of any plant--at least on my computer these links open in popup windows, so if it's a popup blocker problem then they won't work for you either. (If they do work, then come back here right away and try the links here again, but if they still don't work then maybe it is a DG issue) But if they don't work then I think that confirms my popup blocker theory.

If it is your popup blocker, I just learned a new trick...an email that I just got said that many popup blockers can be temporarily circumvented by holding down the Control key while you click the link. I tried it and it works with mine, so if it does turn out to be the popup blocker that's a good trick for you to try (may not work with all the different blockers that are out there though)

Hi all, Beckie may not be on for a while-here is her Baby Saga:

Well, hopefully this will help her when she comes back, but there are others like budgielover who just posted saying they're still having problems too, so hopefully we can continue the discussion in Beckie's absence and get things all figured out for everyone.

I am sure she will appreciate it so she can post pics of the new baby when it finally arrives!!!
