Linking to specific points in threads?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Can this be done? We can link to the top of threads, as well as to specific posts, but can we link to a point, say, halfway through a long thread, and have it start at that specified post and have the thread continue? In other words, make it appear to the person clicking as if they are choosing 'Skip to New' to that post? There are many times where I want to direct people to section where there are a number of interesting posts. Thanks.

Nope. Hopefully most posts aren't that lengthy. ;o)

?? Not long posts, but interesting series of posts within long threads.

You can link to a specific post within a thread. For example, this link will take someone directly to your post (just above mine): http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4561127

That would let you mark a spot for someone to begin reading. Once they finish reading it, they can navigate back to the thread, with that post "front and center", so they can continue reading from that point.

Yes, but you only get that single post - kind of in a vacuum. I'm hoping 'place someone at any point in the thread' where he / she can pick up the thread from that point on.

I don't understand the second part of your last post, Terry. After seeing that single post, how does it 'fast-forward' them to that spot in the thread?

Great idea! I would love to be able to highlight a post by a particular person and copy and paste it or link just to that one post.

You can just highlight any post and save it as a bookmark in your browser. That allows you to change its title to make more sense.

Yes - linking to, or saving, a single post is easy. I want to jump to a point within the thread.

The closest you can get is by linking to the post where you want them to start reading...Try opening the link I added above, then while you're reading it, click on the blue hyperlink above the post that says "In reply to: Linking to specific points in threads?"

That will take you back to the thread, and put you at the spot where that particular post appears in the thread.

There's really no other way I can think of - if you want to be able to point someone to a specific sentence within a thread, that would mean each sentence would have to be (somehow) recognizable to the system (like each post and each thread is identified with a number.)

That would make for very weird reading to see each sentence followed by a "Sentence #xxxxxxxxxx" hyperlink.

Okay - that works. I would just have to remind people to click on the 'In reply to...' Thanks Terry!

You're very welcome!

Another option - involving slightly more work on your part - would be to go through those steps, and click on that link yourself, then copy and paste that URL into your post or dmail.

Here's what I mean:

This link takes you to the post: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4561769

This link will start them at the spot where that post appears in the thread:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/815468/#post_4561769 (you're doing the legwork for them...which might be nice, but not necessary in most cases ;o)

Even better! That's exactly what I was looking for - thanks again!

The only caveat I would throw out is - if they are watching the thread themselves, they probably won't need the complete trail of breadcrumbs ;o) and I'm not sure, but giving them a link like that might render their own "skip to new" ineffectual.

Normally, I would use this for an older, no longer active thread.

Gotcha ;o)
