Tuink - you know how you said your toad lilies didn't germinate last year? Well I was wondering if maybe they had and you just couldn't see them! I think they have to be the smallest seedlings I've ever seen! Teeny tiny. :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I want some jacob kline mondra seeds do any of you know where I can get them? Are they just selling plants and not seeds for this plant? Or is it just that popular and I just missed them somewhere lol Like I need more seeds!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

soulgarden--I love your method of creating a garden! Just the way the seed catalogs would have you believe it happens! HGTV should produce a show sponsored by Burpee about your garden growing! And I can't believe you have so many seeds! That surely must win a prize, too!

I wish my stuff would germinate so readily in the garden, but too much changeable weather here, I think.

For me, I am fussing around like crazy ol' lady in the cold room, warm room, and with my wintersowing containers. My kids are feeling deprived of attention--that's good, I think-----and it occurred to me that I should have used the 'Wintersowing' method on them! (-;

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Now, now t, I know how tempting it is to put those kids in a jug for the winter when they are driving you crazy in the house but that's not nice LOL

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL LeBug--my 'kids' are twenty-five and twenty-one and they are like hot house seedlings! Now what do I do? I'm hoping for late but bountiful bloom!

Actually they are great kids and they clean up after my mess in the kitchen too!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

you're blessed to have kids, for me it wasn't in the cards, double drats...but if furry friends count (at least a little) as kids we are very blessed :) My sister is sweet with two children so I do have a niece and nephew whom I adore....I'm going to try a flowering tree for their new home. Either the Eastern Red Bud or the Crape Myrtle 'tuskagee', I'm waiting for her to tell me which one she wants to try :)

I just planted my violas

...do I cover them and put them outside for 24hrs then bring them in? or, do I leave them in and cover them? right now they are outside on the porch, I didn't know what to do with them! thanks

ps I like the tassel flower too in Suzy's photo

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I've got a son still waiting for his 'bountiful bloom' lol

Ok, Fairy, Flower or Wind, one of you all was wanting to know how to start the 'Jester's Jacket' I found it :) I hope it wa one of you three maybe it was someone else lol

http://fothergills.co.uk/en/hardy-geranium-jesters-jacket-2505.aspx

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Wind, here is what Tunik said:

Violas,
Fairy, yes they need dark. They germinate at 65 degrees Fahrenheit (more or less) which will take 2-3 weeks. However, germination is erratic: some of the seeds will germinate much faster than others.

In my experience pansies germinate relatively easily. Violets are more difficult. Some species I've simply given up trying, like Viola Freckles...

I just put mine in the closet until they germinate :)

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Wind - I put a piece of cardboard over the part of the tray where I had violas, and checked it starting at day 4 - when they started peeking I kept the cardboard in place for a couple more days to give the others a chance to germ, but then took it off so they could all have some light. The first couple got a bit leggy waiting for the light, but they seem to be doing OK now. (I had the cardboard large enough that it sat on the sides of the tray, and didn't rest on the top of the soil.) I've not tried violets....yet......

And I just remembered that I have those blue poppies in the freezer - gotta do something with them!

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks Lea, for the Jester Jackets info. It 'twas me. (Everyone should check out the link-it's such a cute little geranium!) I think I will sow some today. I'm still trying to figure out their hardiness though. The woman in the Netherlands that I got them from said they were HHP, but I'm not sure if that is correct, because I haven't found any info to back it up. I have a lot of hardy geraniums to start this year.
I want to make some 'tufa pots, so maybe I'll put the Jester Jackets in the greenhouse in a'tufa pot? We'll see when we get to that side of summer!
I'm feeling sick AGAIN everyone. I'm sick of this!
I just WSed my kids! LOL! Without the jugs though!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Lookin' good there! Lot's of green!

But when will all that snow melt?!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I think I'll WS my son maybe he'll come back with a better attitude LOL

Nice babies there meridith! Mine are slow growin so far except for my annual geraniums.

If I can get around to it today I'm going to try and start some hardy geraniums, I'm getting that white mold on my dirt so I have to nuke all of my dirt, this is really throwing me off, I don't normally have this trouble in at least five years so guess I was due for it!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Hmmm I am also getting a small batch of mold:( The suns out now!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Nope you won't find me in the garden today:P T, Maybe it will melt soon but if it does we will probably get more at least until march is over. Then Aprils always a toss up for light snow, though not often, sometimes even early may. May snow will melt quickly --usually in April any snow we get melts rather quickly too.

It's better for the garden though, the snow cover that is -- because if the grounds bare the stuff is more likely to come up too early on warm spells. Which me no like e==]

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

May snows do melt quickly but they normally candy coat EVERYHING because they are wet. Don't you love those Mer? And despite the fact that we want spring there's something cool about telling warmer folks about your late season snows, eh?

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

True and the winds and cold will kill things if they are not protected!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Meredith, that snow is so pretty, you probably don't like it as much as me, looking at it, tho. lol Could you or DH run out there and make me a snow angel? I can't make one here, the neighbors would call the police. lol : )
~Lucy

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Flower - you described May snow how I was thinking it in my head:) I was picturing the frosty covered tips of spring bulb sprouts. And yes protection --another good reason for snow cover.:) Though where my husband was supposed to plow in a town near Boston-- they've had more winter mix type storms, so no snow cover. He ended up taking a different plow route because of the lack of work!
This last storm dumped more there-- than here, though!
:) I do think snow is pretty but most people around here complain about it.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

We are hibernating today but heres a day we bundled up and braved the cold. I couldn't find one of snow angels but this smile should make up for it!

Mer-VERY CUTE! You don't want to WS that little honey!
Lucy-you should have asked sooner-I was taking pics of my BIG boys out in the snow. They both have bdays this week-Nev will be 16 and Eli will be 12!!!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Aaaaaaaaaah, how precious, Meredith. I just found out today, that I am gonna be a Grandmother for the first time. : ) So, that was just the kind of picture I needed. Thanks for showing it. : )
~Lucy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Looks like a snow angel to me soo sweet!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Flower, it's never to late to take pictures, run those boys out there, LOL ~Happy Birthday to your BIG Boys. : )

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Aaaawww. So sweet. A snow angel to be sure! I wish I had a bunting like that to wrap up in!

We have some snow here today. Very nice. We have our fires going and daughter dear is making cup cakes. We'll cuddle up tonight. Then that's enough winter for me and off to FLA!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Flower - You'll probly have as much luck to get those boys to pose for you as I'd have with my husband lol! Wow 12 & 16! Happy Birthday to them!
Congratulations Lucy!- I just found out I'm gonna be an aunty for the first time!!
T-Love snuggling up by the fire too! Mmmm.. I think I may bake some cookies this evening.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Congratulations Blue!! A new grandbaby is always fun - especially the first one! (At least, that's what my Mom told me :> ) Meredith - that's a sweetie for sure, but I'm surprised there isn't at least one snow angel out there with all the white stuff you've got. (Of course, I'm not out making snow angels either - I always end up with snow down the back of my coat!)

I put the hardy hibiscus I had in the kitchen window into soil today, about half were showing little tails, so they all went into pots. Then I put 4 different kinds of hosta in paper pots; and then in the mail found a card from a friend with 5 different kinds of black tomato seeds. Looks like it's time to transplant the remainder of those poppies that are in the APS and use that room to start my 'maters! Did the "pliers-grip and file" action on some canna seeds, so they're in water with H2O2 in the kitchen windowsill.

I also caved in and decided to go back to the Access database I was building rather than use an Excel spreadsheet - just too hard to sort and find the info I needed. I'm about a third of the way through that - thank heavens we have some great trashy horror movies on DVD I can listen to while doing all that transcribing!

Flower - don't forget The Concoction - LOL! I swear it worked for me, and I'm still takin' at least one cup of it a day - don't feel quite right if I don't :)

toronto, Canada

Meridith - Your wee one is too cute! So good of you to take them out in the snow, it is -5C here and I cannot get myself out in the cold :-)) KD

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Meredith - we cross-posted - congrats! I LOVE being an aunty! I had the most fun last week asking all sorts of serious truck questions of my 11 yo nephew - and he was SO SERIOUS answering me - it was great!!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Here is my 10 yr old stepson - we let him have weird hair for getting honor roll report cards! He thinks he's a rock star with his gui -tar

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Such a bummer! I just went out in the truck to get some more dirt and I have three bags of pro mix out there in the truck bed with a topper on it in the garage and it is frozen!!!!! Guess I won't be planting anymore until I go get some more dirt Monday :( It's just been staying colder and longer this year I guess, it's never frozen before in the back of the truck I'm soo bummed out!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh-all the little ones are soooo cute!!

Sorry I have been away-I have been busy getting seeds done & running my co-op-order thread went up yest!!!

Meredith-what I understand for tulips is every 3-5 years yuo have to either move them or fill in the hole (if they are togehter) w/ new soil-the reg soil somehow gets fungus in it-just the tulpis though....

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

That is good to know about tulips, thanks. I am hoping I don't have just leaves and no flowers from them, this year. I will have to wait until fall to dig them if this is the case. So I don't ruin the dafs that are mixed in with them. ?Why did I do that again? I thought it would look nice and it did but now I have made more work for myself haven't I :(

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Suzy - I was just trying to google Delphinium nudicale and I found it in your 2006 journal! Did you have success with it? I got mine from hardy plants too! I tried it from JL Hudson last year and lost the flat when I tried to harden them off:(

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes, I had luck wintersowing them, until I never got them planted. They just grew in the milk jug bottom all season and tried to throw up a pitiful bloom or two. I went ahead and planted them out in fall, but they were so pitiful, seriously stunted, that I started over again this year.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow, this thread is running fast! Wind, we have had some much needed rain, but are officially still in drought. The state officials are going to let people hand water (no sprinklers) their yards three days a week during certain hours. However, now the local officials need to decide if they are even going to allow that. Pools can be filled this year and all the moms will be saved this summer. We have our well and can water as we wish and use our sprinkler system.

Deborah, I tried to wintersow those seeds and it didn't work out for me. Hope it works for you. Got my plants at Lowe's last year. I have yet to see if they will return for me.. if not, I'll be on the lookout for them.

Tabasco, please don't believe me for a minute!! I'm just joshing!! I FEEL like I have that many seeds after Suzy's swap, but probably have under that by at least a million! :) Yes, I thought it out and had to do more direct sowing this year... so getting the load of compost was the answer. When my kids make me crazy, I wintersow them in their room and hope they grow some from it! :)

Meredith.. It does look pretty, but I know that white stuff is cold!! :) She looks like a snow angel to me too! Your stepson is a cutie too... Isn't that funny when you google plants and you come back to people you know here?? I've done that lots!

Suzy, thats why i knew I had to direct sow this year.. Thinning is easier than transplanting even though I'm the worst at thinning.. i want more more more and want to give them two inches to do it in. I had so many plants growing in pots i wintersowed that a friend commented on my pot garden and i had to tell her it wasn't intentional to do that! No more!! I need to keep remembering that I don't have a staff here!

Susan

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

good morning everyone :)

Susan, glad to hear your surviving the drought

Meredith, the children are adorable!

I have a question on sowing asclepias curassavica
it is a tropical/tender perennial milkweed and the propagation methods on plantfiles suggest to stratify? mine never came back from self sowing before, how should I plant these seeds? I'm in zone 6b ~ thanks!
