Today's Weather in Your Garden - 13
It started snowing here about 1 o'clock and seems to get a little heavier by the hour. Ought to be a blizzard by suppertime!
Just drove home from work. Guess what, it's snowing! Been coming down since 1PM here. The roads were just wet so far except mine was starting to accumulate as usual. I have tomorrow at home.
SNOW, SNOW, SNOW!!!!!!! Eleanor
35 and raining hard here.
42, no rain and no snow...yet.
Raining now, still no wind really and 40 degrees.
Not much different here: 42 and light rain.
I just couldn't stand this miserable, dreary weather today and decided to go to the local greenhouse/florist. They had some wonderful succulents and begonias which followed me home! There is nothing more cheerful on a day like this than to visit a nice greenhouse and bringing home some new babies!
So true! I did it a few times in December as I shopped for plants, as a Christmas gift for my daughter's garden window, and it was such a grand diversion.
Well what a difference a few hours can make. I shoveled a few inches off but it's all back again. It says 1-2" an hour till 10 when it will turn to sleet and icy rain. Oh goody, my favorite!
Temp 42.6°, Wchill 35.9° Wind SSW 8.1, light rain.
I get 39.50° with the sun due south on 2/25 @ 12:19pm
and 49° 07' on 3/20 @ 12:19pm for my location Victor, ( I factored in elevation). ☺
Songbirds singing in the am again. ☺
Elevation??
Meters above sea level for my location. ☺
How much can that affect the sun's zenith, though? Must be practically negligible.
Depends what you use the data for... Seems to be within 2 tenths of a degree difference. What I find surprising is the time difference when the sun crosses the meridian (due south), 12:09 vs 12:19. ☺
Yes that is weird. I used Geoglobe.
I used Celestron's 'The Sky'. I Plotted my location with Google Earth to within 60 seconds of latitude and ft above sea level to within 12" (as of Google's online map date).
Ha ha - within 12"!! So are you sitting or standing when looking up?!!
Sorry for the geekspeak, everyone! It's 35 and raining here.
I knew you were going to say that! (I'd have to add 6' for my height when standing! ☺
added: Height wouldn't affect the time difference though.
46°, light rain ☺

I enjoyed the geek talk. Keep it going.
We'd have to use the same program to be sure with the same tolerances for error to really compare. Time and sun data are used as part of the calculations in GPS handhelds and cars. Also targeting systems, etc.
(Just something for us bored geek gardeners to play with until planting time!) ☺
I keep precise GPS coordinates for each plant.
One of the nice bonuses of having the solar panels is that I can say with certainty how much sun we receive each season and relate it to the garden performance.
Average winter weather here, we missed the snow this time as it went south.
I read yesterday that the U.S. has had the most snow cover in over 40 years this winter! China and Russia are having very severe winters.
Time to break out the hairspray I guess. There were areas north of here that were really dry and will benefit I'm sure.
How much above normal snowfall are you, Al?
We've doubled our season average already, about 35-40" over.
Wow. Lots of mud in your future.
That's for sure.
I'd better rent a pickup and get some snow while I still can, we've had very little here. ☺
How about rain, WC? We've gotten quite a bit lately, to go with the 10 inches of snow last week.
We've had the normal amount of rain here, just barely enough. We sure didn't get 10" snow here on this part of the Island though - not even for the entire winter. What do you say pirl? ☺
My son in Binghamton says that they're getting lots of snow out in his area. Seems like mother nature is making up for for giving us such a mild start to winter. I know this is the way things go with winter and early spring, but I'm tired already! I know spring is a-comin' because my snowdrops are almost ready to open. A little late this year but, a-comin'!
A few dustings and then the major 2.5" last week so I'd guess 3" or less. Not like the winter of 95-96 when we got 5'.
Don't remind me of that year! It's the year we got the house. They wanted to close in Feb but I would not. We moved in mid-March and still had a couple of storms. The biggest ones were over though.
Self-timer shot, Harper?
