I noticed a few weeks ago that my computer was running slow and especially on Daves. Until that time I would do a disk clean and then go to internet options and dump temp files and cookies about every three days. When I would pull up disk clean usually the total was around 40,000 to remove.
When the computer started running slow I now find myself having to do a disk clean and the tempfile and cookies delte thing two and three times a day and each time the total in disk clean is over about 314,000k. ( whatever that means) and i stil have to go to internet options, files and remove all the DG things listed there.
When I went to internet options and looked at the files before I delted them , there are oodles of files from DG. Some are files I think, and at lot of them are what I think are pics. Some are Dg names that I recognize and some aren't. Names I never heard of or seen before yet showing up with DG with them.
Some are names that aren't even on threads I have visted or names for pics that were on the threads I looked at.
I am not computer literate, but I know til a few weeks ao this was not going on and don't understand what makign it happen now.
I wonder too, if all these Dg files and pic files even when ya don't click on the pic on the thread are going to keep showing up and slowing the computer down, will the auction being doing the same? Showing files and pics from all the auctions on a page even if you don't click them?
Hope you can understand what I am asking, and tell me how to stop it, if it can be stopped. Thanks
DG overload of temp files??
I just went and looked at my temporary files, and there's nothing weird going on with mine. The only picture files I found that didn't correspond with pictures I'd clicked on are some of the graphic elements of the DG page itself (like the banners, tabs, etc). Everything else as far as I could tell was pictures that I'd clicked on either in threads or in Plant Files, etc. I don't clear out my history very often so I have some things in there from a long time ago, and believe me if it saved every picture from threads I'd visited but hadn't clicked on the pictures, there would have been millions more files than there were. It's definitely only saving the ones where I actually clicked on the picture.
If you feel the amount of temporary files you have is slowing you down, you can either go through and clear things out more frequently, or you can decrease the number of megabytes of files that the computer saves in the temp files area.
Talk about being computer illiterate - Where are these temporary files located? How do I find them? I've noticed when I'm on DG the past few weeks, it seems slower. Wonder if it's something I need to clear out on my computer?
I clear History all the time ... every time before I close down Safari or Firefox, whichever I'm on .... just a habit to hit clear all history before leaving the computer. Is that what you mean by temporary files?
I don't think it's a problem with your computer, there have been a bunch of other people (myself included) who've noticed some slowdowns over the past couple weeks.
Clearing your history won't get rid of the temp files--all it does is clear out the list of the websites you've visited most recently (which does take up some space on the computer, but not as much as the temp files). At least in IE you have to click different buttons to clear the history and the temp files, I don't know for sure about Safari or Firefox but I would assume it's separate there too. In IE the place to empty out the temporary files is on the same screen as where you clear your history, maybe it's there in Safari and Firefox too.
I have been finding I need to do a disc scan every day or two too, I'm not sure why but I used to do it only occasionally. On my old computer which was ancient I could find the cookies but on this one I haven't a clue how to find them!
plantladylin, if you go to the start menu and bring up all your programmes 'All programmes' is usually at the bottom, by holding the mouse over it they should show.
Go to 'Accessories' then 'System Tools' where you will find 'Disc cleanup' and 'Disc defragmenter'. On my computer when I have used them an icon is put on the start up menu for easy access.
Once Disc cleanup has searched for all unneccessary files, you need to tick the boxes at the side if you want to get rid of them, I don't think there is any you need to keep.
The Disc defragmenter can be done less often, 'Analyse' and it usually tells you there's no need to do it but I do anyway. It will move files on your hard disc so they don't clog up the pathways, they get stuck in different locations and can make the computer run more slowly.
On my Dell computer I can also access these in the 'Help and Support' section by going to 'Tools'.
If you have AOL, they have a 'Computer checkup' on Windows where you can choose to clean your hard drive, this clears the temporary files in IE.
whoa!! Was typign away on here and explainign how I do mine, like wallaby does and while I was on here I went up to tools and went through the process so I had all the right places for doign the disk clean and removing the history and temp files and cookies from IE.
Well since I had the list all up I went ahead and hit select all of them and delte and next thing I know my post was not only gone, but I was looking at an old screen where the forums list and such was on the left side and I was logged out. Now it been months since we had that old format. Have no ide a why cleanign out IE at same tiem on here it woudl do that.
If you got rid of the cookies which stored the present information that would happen, but you obviously didn't get rid of the old cookies!
Thanks for all the great information y'all! I am going to play around with my computer tonight to see if I can get rid of any temporary files!
What a great group we have here, always so helpful!
Thanks again,
Lin
p.s. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WALLABY1 - hope you've had a great day!
Janet, what operating system are you using? I'm using XP & they did literally hide the cookie folder but I found it :-)
Thanks Lin!
angele I have XP too, so tell me where is it???
Janet I'm going to send you dmail
wallaby would you send me a dmail too. I thought I at leats knew what I was doing but maybe I ain't. Computers are a great tool , but very frustrating for the technology challenged.
Thanks angele,
Ok starlight!
I found my cookies! Not that I can see them, but I can delete them. They are in the 'Settings' on the AOL toolbar, which they keep changing with updates so nothing's easy to find. This isn't the same place I found them before, or might be but is different. Once Dell did the clearing of cookies automatically, moving the arrow around to do it remotely/auto, but at some point it couldn't do it anymore so I did it myself. With all the changes they both made everything got lost and I stopped doing it.
If anyone has the same system, I have AOL 9.0VR (that is Vista Ready), in the 'Settings' tab on the toolbar there is a long list of clickable links.
Click on the one which says 'Internet (Web Browser) Settings - Set web browser options and properties'
At the top of the box there is a sub-tab, 'Clear my footprints'
On that there is two options, select the one which says 'Select Footprints to clear'
There mine was checked for 'Browsing History'. 'Browsing cache' and 'Blocked pop-up list'. Cookies is there but wasn't checked, so I checked it and hit the 'Clear selected footprints' button on the bottom.
Then I had to sign back into Dave's, tried several times with a Fail! Lol, I was sure my password was correct, but as I wasn't used to having to sign in to DG and I do on ebay, I was using my ebay name! Panic time, lol.
Great news! LOL, I know the feeling re the passwords!
There's a free program called Cookie Wall that allows you to save cookies you want to save, such as ones that contain your passwords for certain sites, and dump all the rest.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,8156-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html
However, if you want cookies saved, you have to use this to dump cookies and not your browser's program. (On XP, that would be tools-internet options-delete browsing history and then select cookies, temp files, history, etc.)
If you aren't sure which cookies from DG need to be saved, dump them all, log back in and then go to Cookie Wall to see which one from DG is listed as a new cookie.
This is the only site that is running slow for me. Everything else just zooms, but a lot of times I can't even get things to open on here. :(
I installed the program but it doesn't seem to work. Do I have to click onto something other than cookie wall?
I upgraded to the new AOL10 Desktop, it has many great new features and the cookies can be selected in the Settings where you can also choose to keep your passwords and browser cache for faster downloading. They were the ones already not selected for deletion so I left them. This one is up to date with technology!
The link says Cookie Wall is only for Internet Explorer. If you're using another browser, it might not work.
Have you tried using the Firefox browser instead of windows?
My computer used to hang up a lot and then I switched. It is MUCH less hassle.

DG is running exceptionally slow for me. I have done all the clean out. The pictures are sometimes scrolling down from the top. They never did that before. The links take forever and a day. Sometimes I just give up. Not on other sites.
VERYYYYYYYYYY SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW here, too! And ONLY DG.
It's a Monday thing, DG seems to always run slow on Monday. Must be something Admin is doing, like updating from the weekend and stuff. Σ§:o)
Maybe, but it was like this yesterday as well. :(
Hi Miss Beckie!
well, Miss Tammy, then I don't know what to say......mine is usually ok, except for Mondays.
Mine has been this way for about a month.
c
Easter weekend holidays will make it slower, many more people will be on Daves if they can't get out to garden. We have had very cold weather with snow.
On top of that, for the last month or so Dave has been developing the new auction site. I'm guessing one of the servers will be used for this while it's up and operating.
Mine has been this way for quite a while, even before the auction stuff started. Just isn't ALL the time, but aggravating nonetheless!
Today it is beyond slow for me and it is only this site. I was hoping this thread might have an answer to why. Earlier this afternoon the site was unavailable. They must be having technical difficulties.
I donno what is up today, but it has taken me up to 45 minutes to even get on here, TWICE!!!
there's another thread about it--Dave said one of the servers crashed
The servercrashing would cause a major slow down. But for those wanting to set IE to delete Temporary files automatically:
Open Internet Explorer
Click on Tools, then select Internet options
Click on the advanced tab at the top of the window
You should see a scroll box called Settings, scroll down towards the bottom. Under the section labled security put a check mark in the selection that reads:
"Empty Temporary Internet Files Folder when Browser is Closed"
This should delete all files downloaded everytime you close your browser, and keep the cookies. The cookies are the files that store your individual settings and preferences for each website you visit. Cookie files themselves are usually really small and are not as much of a concern.
