Indoor Blooms Part Two

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

What varieties Victor?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't remember. I have them at least five years now.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh. What do you do with them during the winter?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They were supposed to be on the porch this year, but I never finished closing it off. They're sitting in the garage with my other tender plants. Lost a few.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Is your garage insulated? Heated? How do you have it arranged? Any grow lights in there?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I just bought seeds for a hardy Pink Honeysuckle that I have high hopes for a decent smell out if it. Anyone know about them?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No to all of the above, Harper!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Good to know Victor! Sounds like my garage!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

not bad for something I thought was gone

Beautiful 'dead' Amaryilis!!! LOL It looks like it's a tall one....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes it's a tall back from the dead one

:)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

onewish1, try pollinating your amaryllis!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

out of my realm

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Nah . . . its super easy! I just took a simple brush and used that. You could probably use a q-tip. Anyway, I didn't have a clue last year, but I thought I would try. I got LOTS of seeds that I shared with others and I grew three baby Amarylis. :-)

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

What did the babies look like? Were they all different?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My tall lanky one bloomed today, a bloom on each side!

More reds from me too and some oranges and pinks and lions and tigers and bears! No, not really. I love my greenhouse this time of year. I am so ready for spring, but nature has other ideas, so I have a blast of color in the greenhouse to enjoy. Along with the usual start of white flies. DH was going to spray yesterday. Not many slugs this year yet. Patti

Oh, I'm glad I've stayed away from this thread - drool isn't good for my computer! x, Carrie

Beautiful Patti!! I love that clivia.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

What a nice sight to see, all these blooms on a chilly March day. Just noticed I have a bloom stock just starting on my amaryllis. Yippee it lives. :)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I have a mess of Clivia from one plant bought at a flower show in NYC back in the early 80's. Never fails me. I bought two very small yellow ones last year, but don't expect a bloom for another year or two. I love them.

Ngam, Amaryllis are a total joy. We keep them rotating through the house all winter as they begin to bloom. Some of them are old kids too, and like the Clivia are easy in our passive solar heated gh. They seem to do fine with the lower, but not freezing temperatures and we just put them out on a porch in the summer and water when needed.

I got some very inexpensive freesia bulbs from Bleek/4paws bulb coop last fall. I was late in planting them, but they are about to bloom. Can't wait for the scent. If they work out, I will do more next year in cycles to have them Dec to March That would be a treat. I should have staked/ringed them, but think I will just use them cut for vases. Anyone grow them? Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Patti those are beautiful and such a welcome sight!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing those and brightening our day!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Patti, I swear I was going to UNwatch this thread, but now that you mention freesia - I bought some - a lot - finally remembered them and potted some up a few weeks ago. Can I plant them outside, do you think, as an annual? xx, Carrie

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Carrie, I have no idea. But send Bleek a dmail. He is so helpful and nice to correspond with. He goes off to Holland for the tulips, I think, but worth a try, asap. Patti

More indoor blooms are keeping me happy. Freesia about to pop. Patti

when did you start your freesia?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, when? x, Carrie

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Very late. I just forgot about them. I got them from Bleek/4paws coop in the fall and I didn't plant them until sometime in Dec along with some pots of tulip bulbs that I bought just before Christmas to try and force in the GH. When I was potting up the tulips, I noticed the little bags of forgotten freesia bulbs on the bench. The tulips are blooming now too. Next year I will buy and start both tulips and freesia in a staggered way starting much earlier, so we have them from Jan until April. If I remember. Patti

I have a bag of those forgotten freesia bulbs... guess it's too late to start them now?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

It they are not soft, I would plant them inside. But I never met a bulb that I didn't plant. Patti

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

they aren't soft... gave em a squeeze the other day... will give them a go then... thanks!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I love freesia. I wish they were perennial by me.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Rats. My PCA, my right hand woman Tania, came in while we were in Utah to get a few hours (she had to take Mon and Fri off, and she gets NO paid time off, so if we're out of town, I ask her to come in to take in the mail and put out the trash, or whatever). I had asked her to put the plants that were hiding in the garage - nothing horribly tender, just some containers DH stuck in there - back out. Now, she's used to me winter sowing. She's NOT used to me starting bulbs or seeds that are tender. And, she does speak Spanish as a first language. There is definitely a communication - it's not a barrier, it's not an issue, it's not a problem - situation.

So she went above and beyond the call of duty and put out the butterfly bush that got here late last fall and was in a pot inside the patio door - that was OK. She put out the sweet peas in orange juice containers - maybe not terrific, but not horrible. BUT SHE PUT OUT THE FREESIA THAT I STARTED IN POTS A MONTH OR SO AGO! And the brug Michaela gave me. Maybe I am doomed not to grow freesia. I'm not sure I have any more corms. x, Carrie

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Carrie, sorry about your freesia, here are some of mine starting to bloom. I should have staked them, but I didn't. I cut them for a vase so it doesn't matter now. Love the smell. Lots of other things in the GH which is good as it is still rather dull here outside. No narcissus yet, they are plumping up.

Does anyone have daffodils yet?

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

My daffs and tulips are up about 2" or so but that's it. Crocus were blooming earlier this week. Yesterday and today they were shut tight.

I have my first ones opening today!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I have a few. Feb Gold, Gipsy Queen, Small Talk, Jack Snipe, Ice Follies, NOID, Tete-a-Tete and Rip Van Winkle, but no great show yet. Patti
