Dave, please tell. What kind of camera have you got? I've asked Santa for next Christmas' wishes for a real good camera. I'm hopelessly hooked for one, hoping to capture just a fraction of what good pics. that you've collected.

Lily:

I have several digital cameras, all made by Canon and all SLR. My best is the 1D Mark III, which is the top of their line and is the model used by many professional sports photographers. It does a lot of things I don't often use and it is built like a tank so it is quite heavy, especially with a big lens mounted on it. But if you can carry it, it is great for birding. My backup, and the one I use most of the time is the Canon 40D, which I really like. It is much lighter and does a good job with birds as well. (And it is about one-fourth the cost of the Mark III.)

I should acknowledge that other camera makers also make very good cameras and lenses. It's just that I happen to have invested in Canon.

But there are several other things to keep in mind. First is the lens. If you do go with Canon, consider the Canon 100-400mm zoom. I know several people who own that lens and get spectacular results with it.

The other thing you need to do is think of ways to get as close as you can to your subject. I feed mealworms and many of my favorite birds come right up on my deck to feed. That is where I shot the titmouse series and that is where I get most of my sharp bluebird and woodpecker shots. But these are topics that we can discuss between now and Christmas

Thank you, Dave. I may just send Santa here early, just in case I've many more visitors to my new bird feeders in the backyard. I've spotted bluebirds, and many others who came to visit. And luckily during the winter months. I've "water chickens" come to visit, as well as egrits in the summer. I'm going to be in bird heaven year round here, seems like. Thanks for the info.

I have really enjoyed these pics, the T. Titmouse is one of the sweetest birds around! Poor thing looked exhausted, lol, soon recovered though!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

How would we make it happen?

Would you need higher res images. How many and which ones. You mentioned having webspace. Dellrose mentioned putting a collage up on a wall. Are we all talking about the same thing?

I know this is a titmouse thread, but here is a Carolina wren at take off. His wings are going like a hummingbird but I managed to stop them and most of him is in focus.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

This was a great series of shots. Really shows the personality of the bird.
Loved them all esp the "I am dying here without food, I can't even stand anymore"
I expected the next picture of him on would be on his back with his legs up in the air!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL cpartschick!! I agree, this is the funniest bird pics I have ever seen!! That little drama queen is forever imbedded in my brain!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

LOL, cpartschick; be careful what you've wished for. Dave could make it happens. lol
Wonderful pics. Dave.

I think it did happen and Dave was scared that we would think the picture was real, and not "playing".

Stafford County, VA

OK, you asked for it...sorta

The star of this one is a Carolina wren that stayed too long in the bath on a very hot day There are five shots all total. I'll try to upload them as quickly as I can.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Well, that is not a pretty sight!! lol

Are all your birds such drama queens?

Stafford County, VA

I must say, Nanny, they are not camera shy.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I bet they know they are being put on the internet for everyone to see. They are stars!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I was glad you did say "...it was a very hot day..." Otherwise, I thought the poor thing was suffering hypothermia -- in actuallity, it was recovering from hyperthermia. lol, great shots Dave.
Kim

lol, that is just pitiful with a happy ending

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

Stopped by here after being blown away by Dave's bluebird pics - UNBELIEVABLE!! Dave, your pics are much better than many I've seen in birding books - I really hope you are going to put together a book (or maybe you already have?) - the drama queen titmouse is really one of the best series I have ever seen. I wish titmice (is that the correct plural?? or titmouses??) visited Minnesota but I have never seen a single one here........

Klamath River, CA

Just got around to looking at this thread..........FANTASTIC!!!!

Bella Vista, AR(Zone 6b)

I have been trying and trying to catch my little tufted titmouse on camera. They sure are fast little things. I finally got one, not too great, but I was excited!

Wonderful and very comical, Don't need TV, we get entertainment by thread like these"
Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Julie, great quality pics. Those lovelies are jewels. I wished I could capture pics. as clear.

Bella Vista, AR(Zone 6b)

Thanks,
I am practicing with my camera, but I have to say that I don't have a lot of patience for sitting still and waiting. I think it is a lot like fishing. If I don't get a bite right away, I start getting "antsy". lol
