Home Remedies????

I may have to ruminate a bit on that neti.... I'm pretty squeamish.....but I may get up my nerve.

hope everyone feels better soon

Now, Louise, Victor links you to the cool threads you haven't seen, but not me?

I think the key to the neti thing has got to be the saline concentration, which is why it would feel totally different from sputtering in an over-chlorinated swimming pool. Last time I got a cold, my mother bought me a little plastic nasal irrigation kit. I never got up the guts to use it, though. The neti thing looks so much cooler.

When I was in the hospital refusing to die of pneumonia just about exactly six years ago to the day, these people from Respiratory Therapy used to come in and stick things down the nostril that didn't already have other stuff going down it. That was yucky. When I am fully emotionally recovered, I may check out this neti thing.

Notice that the medical profession (of which I am not a member, nor do I play one on television) always uses saline, not water, to wash, rinse, clean, wipe, irrigate, etc. Also the Caribbean (here I come?) has about the same salinity as contact lens solution or tears or you get the picture. Opening your eyes underwater in a chlorine pool and they sting and burn, but in the warm, saline ocean it's easy. Haven't spent that much time underwater up here - too darn cold and dark and seaweedy!

Summary of events since I last posted: Louise is now sick, right? I hope you are starting to feel better. Some people have been bitten with something I've never heard of - chiggers! We just have mosquitos and black flies and bees and wasps and hornets, but no chiggers. I hope all of you are recovering. And Michaela, are you better? I've only read back a few posts so I'm still clueless as to what has happened lately!! Eleanor

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

It's just like soap operas, Eleanor.....whatever you post, it'll be relevant to something at some point in the cycle soon, so don't bother to read any of the longer threads - just say something obscure and we'll integrate it somehow!!! LOL (That may be this darn fever speaking here!) LOL
Looks like cereal for supper tonight.......neither of us is up to anything else. At least I'll go whole grain with some of those mahvelous bananas! I'll be well by 11:00!

Louise,

Quoting:
Thanks, Victor, for sending me to this thread...hadn't seen it, as I'm always forgetting to check out threads that aren't on my "watch list".

that is your comment to which I am referring.

Sorry if my natural inner turmoil is spilling out and confusing you!

x, Carrie

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I get it now, Carrie. Can you tell I'm sort of being blonde tonight??? LOL

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, don't worry about it. x, Carrie

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks! And how is your inner turmoil doing tonight???? LOL

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Turmultuos? Whoops, I guess that's not a word, I was trying to combine tumultuous with turmoil!! I spent an interesting afternoon with one car salesman in my kitchen and an competitor on the phone. I never knew there were two HP van places in my area - well, there didn't used to be! I may come out of this with a car, a makeover, a wheelchair seatbelt (which I didn't have before) and an ice cream cone. x, Carrie

Don't forget the napkin, Carrie!

Does anyone have a home remedy for a plugged eye duct? I have always had this problem but usually stop it before it gets seriously plugged. Last time it was plugged this bad was 1990 and I had to go to the E.R. and they stuck a needle down my eye to unplug it. Very painful and I do not want to go that route again if I can help it!!
Any idea's? I have tea bagged it, hot packs, and eye flushes....it's not getting any worse but I still have a big bubble.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't know. Just praying Allison doesn't recommend peroxide.

We get talking about this and now I have a COLD! I have not had one in 8 years or so.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Computer virus.

Never had one of them. YET

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ouch Victor don't think so.... hot compress and flush is all I can think of... might have to try and figure out if it's something in your diet that might be causing that to happen... can't imagine what would be the cause... new to me sorry

It all started about 20 yrs. ago and the eye doc said no more eye make up, it's plugging your ducts. No problem, less money wasted more for plants! Then my DMIL had a kerosene heater in her house and my eyes reacted severly to the fumes. I now know I have allergic conjunctivitis. When an allergen causes the irritation, the condition is called allergic conjunctivitis. This type of conjunctivitis is not contagious. Some common allergens include: pollen from trees, grass and ragweed; animal skin and secretions such as saliva; perfumes and cosmetics; skin medicines; air pollution; and smoke. For me it is also hard to go through construction sites, the beach even, and play with soil that has very fine particles such as seed starting mix. I believe this is the culprit as I have been starting my seeds and not wearing my protective glasses. So yes it is my own fault this time, but I really don't want the needle!!!!! DH says if it comes to that he bets me $50 i'll remember to wear them next time. Lots of sympathy there!

Schickenlady, I loved all of the tips that you collected, there are a few that I really needed :) And I don't use the drier sheets but my son does and he lived with me for a while so I really appreciated that little tid bit!

Seandor, correction for that apple cider vinegar and honey, it's '1 tbls.' spoon of honey and vinegar and don't put your lemon in until the water has cooled a bit (because of the vit. C) and you need to drink it at least three times a day :)

This is a cool thread glad I stumbled across it :)

Eww pixie62560, that sounds so painful, is there a walgreens around you ask them if there is maybe they can help you? They are full of imformation and willing to help you :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Well you sure have my sympathy here pixie! That has got to be horriable to go thru trying to stay away from all that could cause it plus the needle!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

LeBug - great screen name for this thread. We were trying to get rid of le Bug!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks LeBug, im just trying to stay away from the hospital, doctor, or any other money taking person...leaves less for plants! LOL

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Victor you are a trip! LOL That has been my nick name for years every since I was a child and that was a loong time ago but then I don't want to really admit to how long it has been LOL

I hear ya pixie, I'd want to stay away from that treatment for sure and your eye sounds so painful! And then we really do need to save our money for all of those plants we want to buy, can't be giving it to those greedy doctors!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yikes... sounds painful Pixie... I get the same allergy eye funk.... as I sit here and rub my nose and eyes after messing with the strawflower seeds & and the fuzzy things all over me... (don't really clean those before storing...my own fault).... makes me wonder how every year strawflowers don't pop up in my inside planters

:)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I get allergies too. Anxious to see if the neti will help this year. Usually end up with Allegra.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am curious about the neti ... might have to try it.... my shots help me big time... but still get the conjunctivitis I think mostly because I work in dirty places... diesel soot and tractor trailer filth can't help... and I can never leave my eyes alone

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yikes, Celeste, that sounds awful. Wish I had a remedy for you. Here's a hug instead.

(((((Celeste)))))

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

The best recommendation i can offer is to use warm compresses. Perhaps OTC eyedrops, the preservative-free kind that come in individual vials - might help - can't hurt. i've found them helpful with my eye problems. (i'd also been paying $12 a box at Walgreens or CVS and found out last night i can get the same ones at Walmart for $7.42!)

Wow - it is snowing! Since i started this message! Yikes.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks everyone, hopefully something will work and NOT a needle!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Vacuum cleaner??

Just type you use on your keyboard.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Ouch! Celeste! I can only imagine, because I had a stone in a sub-mandibular duct (under your tongue, a salivary gland) last summer and she's poking around with this pointed object and it was excruciating and I, I who am afraid of anesthesia, i begged her to knock me out and THEN take it out with her needle and she's "but I almost got it, but I'm soooo close, it's right there!" It turned out there were TWO of them and they didn't knock me out totally but some kind of twilight sleep type thing.

So I thought of something, Celeste - cut onions. Do things that will make you cry to flush it out. Might that help? Watch sad movies? Because you don't want to unclog it from the outside in, you want to unclog it from the inside out, right?

Let us know, please. xxx, Carrie

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Pixie - Hope your eye is improving! Eleanor

The virus or cold waht ever it was. I got lasted 1 day. No Netti or that Peroxide :-) I did do one Alka-Seltzar Plus Cold packet........ Man that was really gross. I wont tell ya what happened with the glass that I drank the stuff out of. Ouch.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

1 day is pretty good, Sherrie! I've never been able to stomach Alka-Selzer, as it were. Of course it was gross - you were tasting things that were designed to be swallowed whole. Great marketing, though, eh? It tastes horrible, then you feel better - it's like doing sit-ups (bad) then getting stronger (good). Plays right into our work ethic or something like it.
(opinionated today, for a change) Carrie

wanna know about the glass?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I have a feeling you're going to tell us anyways!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah. I wanna know.
