What DON'T you miss about the old days?

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

We can still live a simpler life, the home sewn clothes sure can get expensive though.
That is all I had growing up, but Mom was a seamstress and she made amazing things, all the other little girls were jealous. I was so lucky (and maybe a little spoiled) We were fairly poor though, but happy.

Another thing I do miss is the "wonder" of things. First time I saw a transistor radio, man on the moon, Polaroid cameras, first calculator. Digital cameras (I still think they are magic). The wonder of the Internet. Still boggles me.

I went into labor watching "pong" for the first time. I laughed so hard. Is it any wonder that child became an Internet techie?

Seems now everyone expects stuff to do cool impossible things.

I think our attention spans have grown shorter. I used to read a lot as a child. I could read for hours! I don't know anyone, of any age, who does that now. I did it for fun. Read all the stuff that was too old for me, of course.

I read alot as a kid. After moving into this house 6 years ago, we didn't hook the tv up to anything, too busy. We never missed it and started to read again. 6 years with no tv and we are still alive.
I discovered that we have a wonderful library in town, after spending too much money on books.
We both read quite a bit.

I read a lot, too, BUT...my attention span has been shortened lately. If you don't have anything interesting to say in five minutes, I start to glaze over. I've been working on that, though. LOL ☺

The first paperback I bought with my own money was 35 cents... and I learned to sew because I was the youngest and making my own was the only way to avoid hand-me-downs, lilylu! Back then, plain old fabric was as cheap as 25 cents a yard. Then it became popular... so a Market was created... and now it's cheaper to buy clothes than to make them. I wouldn't trade the skill for all the clothes in China, though!

I was the one who always had her nose in a book. I don't read quite as much now, but I read a LOT.

There's lots of good and bad to this. We've turned into a "throw away" society but we know so much more. On the one hand, we don't HAVE to do certain things, like making our own clothes, unless we choose to. But, on the other hand, if we need to know something, it's as close as our pockets.

There are alot of things I miss about the old days like being able to go and do anything as a kid without worrying about predators. I really love airconditioning though, and don't want to live without it ever! I always tell my very young co-workers (they look younger and younger every year!) they don't know how easy they have it! When one was complaining about her non organic orange juice I told her , Honey you are too soft! When we were kids we went outside and played in the DDT and came into our asbestos filled houses painted inside and out with lead and ate rare hamburger, chicken that our mother left out thawing all day, and our tuna sandwiches(back when tuna in the can was real fish not mush in a can, and drank whole milk every day! It's a wonder any baby boomers made it to adulthood in numbers large enough to threaten to bankrupt the social security system!

Ditto!!!

LOL, The kids do have it easy, but so did we.

My grandfather told me a story about the first time he ate an orange. It was almost exactly 100 years ago. He was walking to school, following the school marm and she was eating an orange and throwing down the rind.
He ate the rind and said it was so good, he couldn't imagine the orange tasting better.

lol. We never got oranges much growing up and I can still remember how excited we were to get an orange in our Christmas stocking. I still think oranges are a Christmas tradition!

One thing I do miss is Halloween where all the kids used to go out and nobody got kidnapped or molested or poisoned. Most of the costumes were home-made and not based on t.v. or movie characters. You know, hoboes and cats and ghosts. It was my favorite holiday as a child. The worst thing I ever heard of happening was if a big boy stole your candy. Then your mom made your brothers give you some of theirs!

LOL! I remember a group of us moving an outhouse into the middle of the street on holloween night...of course, that's when we were a little too old to be trick or treating...but fun none the less we had fun!

Santa Fe, NM

See, in those days, that was fun. Now the kids would be arrested! l.o.l.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Or their parents, for neglecting them!

Santa Fe, NM

L.O.L. You're right!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

yep and if their parents dared spank them for their misdeeds they might get arrested too!

Not missed: Home perms received the weekend before school photos were taken! UGH!

Missed: Wing windows or vent windows on cars. Could do without a/c by directing the breeze.

Not missed: Saturday night (only) baths. LOL

One thing that I definelty don't miss is sharing a full sized bed with my sister who on occasion would wet the bed!!! NO FUN! LOL!

I don't miss cars without a.c. I grew up in Arizona. If we went on a car trip to California we left at 2 or 3 a.m. to cross the desert before it got hot. Although, in a way, that made the trip more special. It was miserable, though, if you had to go somewhere unplanned in the middle of the day.

(Zone 7a)

Eew!!! Lilylu, that would be bad! LOL

Roybird ~ that is a good way to go thru that country (at nite). Kind of like west TX ~ is doesn't seem as forelorn in the dark! LOL

Yes, and you can listen to the c.d. player...oops! We didn't have c.d. players then! l.o.l. That's a good modern invention. Maybe. I would be crossing the country, driving at night through the desert listening to "Prairie Home Companion"; not some kind of Thump,Thump, Thump music.
