How is YOUR So. Cal weather?

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Is everyone enjoying all this warmth and sun?
The weekend was beautiful and we're supposed to have temps. in the upper 70's all week.

About time, isn't it?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Well, yes, the warmth is nice - though I was kind of enjoying the days with light clouds. My problem is, some of my young plants are wilting in the sudden heat. If I water them, I run the risk of causing root rot - been there, done that. Plus, I just picked up a load of plants to put in - the last until fall - and was hoping to get them in while it was on the cool side.

So, I wish the clouds would come back. :-(

BTW, it's in the 80s here.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It's only been in the high 60's here and I've still been jumping up and down for joy! But I actually hope it doesn't get too much warmer until the nights warm up too--even with doors open and a fan circulating air during the day, my greenhouse has been hitting close to 100. The nights are still way too cold for me to think about pulling the plants out, but if we get another 10 degrees warmer during the day my plants are going to fry!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Yep, the nights are still cold here, too - though not as bad.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Kaperc, I'm in SD too...can you give some tips as far as the root rot problems you've had? When it got warm here the 1st thing I did was water all the plants! oops.........

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Depends on your situation, Rob, don't panic! :-)

We have a full southern exposure and we are growing native CA plants, and some of them won't tolerate too much water when it's hot and the roots aren't well established . What happened to me is the plant would start to look a little droopy and I would water it. Depending on the plant, that can be the absolute wrong thing to do - if they didn't perk up and I gave them more, of course they would die because I've given them too much for their little roots. Problem is too little water sometimes looks the same as too much water! I'm learning little by little. We won't be planting in hot weather anymore. Just couldn't get the watering right and we lost so many plants I couldn't count them.

I was out weeding this morning and the soil is still damp, so I'm going to check the droopy ones and see what they need. Maybe little umbrellas like wcgypsy uses for her babies. :-)

Yes, Liz, my greenhouse was 100 degrees by 11 am - and I don't have a fan! No power, so I need a solar fan.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

It's been absolutely gorgeous here, hot! I spent the last 4 days weeding and cleaning the gardens. This weather sure brings out the best in me. Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler, about 71 but I'll take it! The soil is nice and damp here too, perfect for pulling weeds. Hey I can actually SEE my irises now and there's a couple of them blooming!

Ramona, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi All, It has been SO nice here --- in the low 80's in the day and back down in the 50's at night. Things are starting to sprout. Oh boy, oh boy...here we go.

The ground is soft here too from the rains, and I was able to get down the back bank and extend the fire break.
Some of the larger bushes that usually wreck the weed-eater, came out of the ground easily -- roots and all.

Bushes be gone and defensible space be it now. (smile)

The weeds are everywhere with all the rains. It seems I'll be weeding for-ever. Wish I could spend days in the garden like you weeg, but alas there is work.

I hear we're in for a mild Santa Ana this weekend.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Oh no...not that! I want the clouds back!!! I'm beginning to sound like Sherry/wcgypsy.

Ramona, CA(Zone 9b)

Well that's what they said on TV. When are they ever right anyway? Believe it if it gets here.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I too heard strong winds coming our way. Just after I raked the aftermath of the last windstorms up! There's always something, huh?!?!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

thanks kaperc! I actually have most tropical plants, so I guess water wouln't hurt them then...
Tleaves, i feel exactly like you do, I so wish I could spend the whole day gardening but I gotta work!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Rob, are you coming to the garden party next week and the roundup in June?

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I have Dmailed inviting her; hope she can come.

LOL...may have better luck if you ask *her*/ Roberta....

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

So, WC, thanks for the correction; I remember one time a DG member got pretty disturbed because, for some reason, they were constantly mistaken for the opposite gender.

Sorry, Roberta. You're still welcome, even if you are a woman. And of course you are welcome to bring along a friend. Dogs are questionable as my grand dog, Molly (who weighs all of 9 pounds) thinks she is an attack dog when other dogs come around.

She was attacked by a Doberman and had to have surgery; since then she is vicious toward other dogs. DD takes her to Dogie Daycamp in San Diego, trying to socialize her. (Next thing you know it will be a dog psychiatrist). That being said, she LOVES people, especially Donna (SoCal).

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Sorry, too, Roberta!

Did everyone see Uno the beagle who won the Westminster dog show? What a cutie. I like his handler's description of him - "a merry little hound." :-)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I saw that; cute!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hey! It was ugly today...cold, and the sun never came out for a minute, and it looked for sure like it was going to rain, but never did.

So much for our warming trend....

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Supposed to warm up toward the weekend. It was foggy here this morning, then the air was heavy and kind of dirty all day - not what I wanted at all! Thought for sure it was going to rain - even our forecaster do-hicky was fooled. At least the g/h stayed cooler, that was one good thing. I think my lotus were starting to boil before.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I'll be darned - the forecaster do-hicky was right! Had a couple of good showers this morning.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Not so nice outside now huh!?!!?? it's cold and windy here and had showers early this morning. There goes my weed spraying and spreading bark. Weekend is supposed to be nice though, we'll see.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Except for the up to 70mph winds they are forecasting for L.A. - hope we don't get some of that!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

There go all the leaves I raked up in piles to be picked up later, back to where they were! Never ending I'm afraid. Oh well, gives me something to do!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Sometimes I wonder if I REALLY want our trees to grow up. :-)

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Oh they do Kathleen, the weather just isn't right for them yet.

Anza, CA(Zone 8b)

I got a foot of snow today! It was fun.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

That's a lot for one day where you are, isn't it? Aren't you near Aguanga?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Wow, a foot? Bet that was fun to watch. I like how quiet it is when it snows.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

That *is* quite a bit for Anza, isn't it? How wonderful. I was surprised that we got snow on our local mountains today and especially surprised at how low it was, I've never seen the slopes so covered. Especially beautiful. Quite a gift.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Yes, the view of the mountains today was crystal clear (from here) and I was amazed at the amount of snow and how "low" it was. I was standing on the bluffs at the beach and marvelled at being able to see snow covered mountains which seemed as close as arms length.

Ramona, CA(Zone 9b)

Wow a foot in Anza. It was cold and blustery here all day today with some hail and lots of rain. No snow. I can't believe the snow is down near Ramona. How nice it must be to watch the snow from the beach JD. We are too socked in to see anything today. Let's hope it clears up for the weekend. I really wanted to get out in the yard.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

It was 33 degrees this morning and we had a heavy layer of frost on the ground, so I'm not surprised the snow level is low. We're only 10 miles from the ocean.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Well, this day is a far cry from the weather we had earlier in the week, cold and windy out there. Was that weather just a teaser?!?!!?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I think we finally had some frost here last night. I see some nipped edges on a few things that were peeking out from beneath the row cover fabric. Glad that I made myself go out and cover everything...I think it's going to be that cold again here tonight. Birdbath was frozen this a.m....that really surprised me. At least I hadn't moved much out of the greenhouse.

Anza, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh, pooh! All that lovely snow melted. I was so hopeful.... I love snow.

Anza, CA(Zone 8b)

It was 75 degrees yesterday. My trees don't know WHAT to do. My dogs are shedding like buffalos, and it's supposed to rain. snow? I don't know!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Drizzling here, supposed to be like this for 5 days?!?!!?!

Anza, CA(Zone 8b)

Patchy clouds here..... I don't think my fruit trees have even had enough chill hours to set anything...

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

So have I !!!
