North Texas Fall Round Up, Saturday October 18th 2008.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Everybody,
I thought we better reserve a date, how do you all feel about it?
We can decide on the place later, there is a pavilion by lake Arlington that I want to check into, or we can have it at the same place as last year.
What do you think?
The picture is of Sheila_FW,
I thought her picture depicted the spirit of the event best, although we have many wonderful pictures.
Josephine.

That's ok with me! I do like that spot SO much better! Thanks for planning ahead already!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Great Paige!! one down, how many to go?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Sounds great to me too... will be there - from the fridged north

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Great Mitch, it will be wonderful to have you with us.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Putting it on my calendar.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds like a plan to me Josephine. Can't plan too far in advance on the swaps when they get as large as the one last year.

Nevada, TX(Zone 8a)

I have the date marked on my calendar. Great idea to start making plans now. Thank you Josephine.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Patti, Sheila and Dawn, I am already looking forward to it.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

Count me in...I liked the place we had the last one...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Alright Melva, good to hear from you.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I plan on being there too. I can't make the CSRU, but plan on going to Waxahachie. I have a few plants to share that I can bring and then can be passed on the next week.I liked the location last fall, but if the lake has easy parking, that would be good too.

Dallas, TX

Sheila ... you do have me on the list for all these events don't you? You know I have been under a rock here lately, but I am gradually coming out. :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I am not making a list Sylvia! You better check in more often! LOL!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

would you start one Shelia - and on the trade page too... pretty please with whipped cream on top?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hold on guys, isn't this a little too early to start trading plants for October?
I was just reserving the date. We need to start trading for April 19th in Waxahachi.
Josephine.
Sorry had the wrong month.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I am meaning both :-)

Dallas, TX

yes it is too early... I am already behind. :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think Josephine is right Mitch. The trade lists for the two Spring events is enough for now, it would get really confusing if we added October event so soon.

One thing I noticed though, the sticky at the top for events doen't mention ANY of the current ones in the planning.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You are right Sheila, Maggiemoo was taking care of that, but it seems that she has been too busy and or unable to keep up with it.
Maybe you could dmail her and ask if she still wants to do it, and if not, you could take it over, if it is alright with her. It really needs to be kept current. What do you think?
Josephine.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Let me get the dates and links gathered for her and then I will later this evening. I started to invite someone to go there for our local events and noticed there weren't any.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Good deal Sheila, thank you very much.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Here is the Wax swap page - I am the only one so far.. but here you go - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/806779/

Saving the date!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I got the dates switched. I can make it on the 12th. Is there a thread I have missed about it? Do most people come for the day or sleep over one night?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Anna, here is the thread to the College Station swap, April 12th

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/804075/

The swap at Waxahachi is April 19th

Josephine.

I have three dwarf quince that are not doing it for me. Would anyone want these this October? Please speak up now or I'm shovel pruning them in the next few weeks.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

HA! Shovel pruning! Maybe I would get better production out of some of my "stragglers" if I started threatening them with shovel pruning!! :-)

Cocoa, are those flowering quince? or fruiting quince. If fruiting I would like to have to have one please.
Josephine.

Josephine, I've seen something that looks like fruit on them in late summer, but I'm not sure I know the difference between blooming and fruiting. They are in bloom right now...would it help to see a photo of them?

Here is a photo of some of the buds, if you look close, there is still the dried fuit on the stems. The fruit only get about an inch long. Sorry, that's about all I know of this plant.

Thank you for showing us the tree Cocoa, I believe what you have is flowering quince, the fruits of the fruiting quince are about the size of apples, so I think you would have noticed that.
The reason I asked is because when i was growing up in Spain, quince was a very popular fruit, but you hardly see them here, so I thought I might plant one.
I really don't need a flowering one, but i thank you, I hope someone will give it the a lovely home.
Do you have them in a shady area? If so moving them to a sunnier spot might encourage more bloom.
Also a hard pruning seems to encourage them, you might want to check those two things and see if it works better for you.
Josephine.

Oh your right, Josephine. These fruits are no where near that size. There is really nothing wrong them, they bloom really well. It's just that they bloom so early and don't do much for the flower bed the rest of the year. I would like to replace them with some Summer color. Maybe I can just move them to behind the barn.lol I did noticed a bee on them today, so they must have some purpose.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, they give you flowers when not much else is blooming, but if you want a longer blooming period in that area, it would be good to move them to another location, but don't forget to go and admire them wherever you put them.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Josephine. I did see that thread. I was wondering if there was one not about trades,I guess that should start shortly.

Cocoa, I have flowering quince. One of them is against columbines and artemesia and it looks nice. Although, it will probably be finished blooming soon. If they don't shape up for you, I'll take one.

Oh wonderful, BAnna. I'll save one for you. Their really not bad plants, I have hundreds of seedlings spouting and could use the premade bed space. Your combination sound gorgeous!

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Put me down for October, please.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

Is there one left for me?

Melva, do you mean the quince? If so, you bet. I'll bring it this weekend :0)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh that is right you will be there this weekend Cocoa, can I get a little quince plant too?
