Hey, with global warming do you think the frost dates will change???

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I hope we get some benefit out of it :-)

Actually, global climate change may result in some areas actually cooling substantially. There are some climate models that suggest the the gulf stream that warms parts of eastern America and western Europe could collapse is the ice shield covering Greenland melts enough. Apparently, all that fresh water entering the ocean could alter the current.

In that case places like Paris, London, and Edinburgh could have termperatures much like eastern Canada.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

That would really be a bummer. The end of civilization as we know it and you don't even get a couple of longer growing seasons!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Actually the most recent data shows a global cooling. We'll see if it becomes a trend.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think global weirdness is more accurate than warming.
Victor, do you not believe the theory?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Which theory, weirdness or warming?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Warming (Which is kind of a misnomer because it's not all warmer)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That the global temps have been rising is indisputable. I am not convinced that it is man-made (not convinced it's not, either). I am not in favor of draconian measures until we know for sure. I am in favor of moving away from fossil fuels, for a number of reasons.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think going green is win-win regardless but I think man is affecting things and we need to act quickly.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

I am getting a greenhouse. Rather have that than a green house. My children are grown up so I guess I could easily live with my plants. I have a bunch in my bedroom window now, which I had built for plants.
Martha

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dave - but not women!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Men produce 90% of the methane

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Only while watching the game.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ha

South Hamilton, MA

State dog for MA is the Boston Terrier

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

That's appropriate.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Now I wonder what the NY State dog is.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Probably the Yorkie. :))

Suzy

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Cute, Suzy!

Not sure if these were mentioned:
CT flower: mountain laurel
CT tree: white oak
song: Yankee Doodle (I never knew that)
The only president born in CT is presently in the White House. (comments withheld)

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Can't find the NYS dog, but did find:

The beaver was adopted as the State animal in 1975
The ladybug was adopted as the State insect in 1989

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Shh Dave! Everybody thinks he's from Texas! Let's leave it that way!

Okay, no more on THAT subject!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i knew about "Yankee Doodle" - it's made me laugh since i came here.
How on earth this southern-at-heart girl wound up living in a state where "Yankee Doodle" is the state song - well, it just isn't right.

Facts about my home province - (British Columbia)

First contact by Europeans in 1778, when Captain James Cook set foot on Nootka Island on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. The Spanish later arrived and set up a base at Nootka under the command of Don Juan Fransisco de la Bodega y Quadra, who had claimed the coast of Alaska for Spain. In 1792, Captain George Vancouver, with his ships Discovery and Chatham, arrived at Nootka Sound to take regain control under the terms of the Nootka Convention.

Both explorers made the trip to Tahsis to resolve years of Spanish/English rivalry that had played out on this Island, and commenced working together at the task of mapping and exploring the coast. A Treaty in 1793 gave the two countries joint ownership of Nootka, but it was not long after the signing that Spain's dominance in North America began to wane. The last Spanish ship was ordered out of the area in 1795, marking the end of the Spanish influence In British Columbia.

During the late 1850s, the Cariboo Goldrush made Barkerville the largest city west of Chicago and North of San Fransisco. 25,000 prospectors flooded the cariboo.

The preferred name for the province was supposed to be New Caledonia, but Queen Victoria preferred British Columbia

It is larger than Texas and four times larger than Great Britain

Some of the world's largest ranches are in BC (Douglas Lake Ranch is 145,000 acres )

Within the borders of B.C. are three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Anthony Island (Ninstints), part of Gwaii Haanas/South Moresby National Park; the Burgess Shale, that lies within Yoho National Park and the Tatshenshini-Alsek watershed, located in the north western corner of British Columbia.

There are six National Parks: Glacier, Gwaii Haanas/ South Moresby, Kootenay, Mount Revelstoke, Pacific Rim and Yoho, these are managed by the Federal government under Parks Canada. Camping is available in all nationals park in BC, except Mt. Revelstoke. There is a fee charged for camping.

There are more than 400 provincial parks, recreation and conservation areas in B.C. These parks are under provincial jurisdiction and managed by the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks.

There are 131 ecological reserves in the province. They cover an area that totals more than 158,700 ha (392,200 a.) with approximately one-third of the area in marine waters. There is limited use in most of these reserves, but the more delicate areas are closed to the public.

I guess that's why they call it "supernatural" British Columbia.

The X files were filmed in Vancouver.

I had thought "My Hills of CT" had replaced Yale's Boola-Boola as our state song. Don't ask me why. Any of my fellow CT folks shed any light.

Michaela, That is interesting. I never knew the Spaniards were up there.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah . . . who knew? :-)

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Quoting:
I had thought "My Hills of CT" had replaced Yale's Boola-Boola as our state song. Don't ask me why. Any of my fellow CT folks shed any light.

This paragraph makes me think maybe Dave's been drinking some BoolaBoola. i guess i haven't been a nutmeg long enough to understand...
i shed light on a regular basis. often after shining some...

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Amy, Have you ever heard Yale's song?

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

LOL, Amy, you're in New Haven - certainly you must have heard - or at least heard of - Boola Boola?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)
