Thanks mrsj! Here is how it looked originally! Eleanor
Facts and History of my State, please share yours.
They have taken care of my Dad's cars for over 52 years!!!
Dear Eleanor,
lol I know Skaneateles, because I have been through there on a trip, but what ARE they? We didn't actually stop off to find out.
Martha
Skaneateles is a lake and a village but I don't know where the name came from - never thought about it before until you asked. Good google question!! Growing up in the area I just took it for granted and never thought about the origin of the name. In fact most people in the area called it "Skinnyateles"!! Eleanor
Martha - does this help?

Skaneateles Lake is one of the Finger Lakes in central New York in the United States. The name Skaneateles (pronunciation: "skany-atlas," preferred, or "skinny-atlas" common) means long lake in one of the local Iroquois languages. The lake is sometimes referred to as "The Roof Garden of the Lakes" because its altitude (863.27 feet) is higher than the other Finger Lakes. It is 16 miles (25.8 km) long (17 miles long including the bogs at the south end of the lake) and on average .75 mile (1.21 km) wide, with a surface area of 13.6 square miles (35.2 km˛), and a maximum depth of 315 feet. The cleanest of the Finger Lakes, its water is so pure that the city of Syracuse and other municipalities use it unfiltered. The City of Syracuse spends about 2.3 million dollars a year to protect lake quality, sixteen people inspecting (usually twice a year) each of the 2600 properties in the watershed, which is relatively small, compared to other Finger Lakes. William Henry Seward called it "The most beautiful body of water in the world."
The shores of Skaneateles Lake are in three counties: Onondaga, Cayuga, and Cortland. The village of Skaneateles (population about 2500) is at the northern end of the lake. Summer cottages appeared in 1881, increasing to more than 2000 residences around the lake in 2002. Generally new homes now are built for year-round occupancy rather than summer use and many summer cottages are replaced. The transient and seasonal population of this tourist destination and summer resort surges during the warmer months. Skaneateles is noted for its performing arts and amenities.
They forgot to mention that the water is freezing cold even in the middle of Summer!
I used to attend CYO Camp there for a couple weeks every summer - and we did not look forward to jumping off the dock at 8AM for swimming lessons! OMG!!!
Thanks, guys!
I recall the country was lovely.

New Hampshire leads the nation in vanity license plates per capita. Also in property taxes, snow related roof collapses, incest
aquittals, and brother shooting.
Your last two make sense taken together.
I thought VA was the vanity plate capital.
NJ has the highest property taxes in the country. 2X the nat'l avg.
But the highest county is Westchester.
At least you can just choose not to live in that one county, there's no where to run/hide from these horrendous taxes, unless you move out of state, which is not an option at the moment.
There are more people moving out of NJ that are moving in (something that has never happened before)
NY is not much better. My area has had a horrible time lately. In 12 years my taxes have gone up 150%.
My family is all moving to South Carolina - blue mountian region. Where here in NH I pay 4,200 property and approx. 150 for water and that is just water coming in not out. In SC for the same sq. foot and land you would pay around 900 per year. That would also include water and trash removal. Then here in NH we don't have a state sales tax so go figure.
NH is much more reasonable than here!!
Did you go to the soup nazi??
I would love to pay only $4200 for property tax, we paid that 5 years ago for not even a 1/4 acre lot. We pay $7900 now for almost an acre and we have well and septic.
No soup for you!
I pay much more than that, Jen, for 6/10 of an acre. We do have muni water and sewer though.
Victor, don't laugh but I am so bad with fractions, I think I missed that teaching in 3rd grade I was out with chicken pox.
Is that smaller than a 1/2 acre?
Slightly above 1/2.
Thanks!
i used to work at a theatre at 54th and Lex, on the East side. You'd have been near the east river, not the ocean. During my time there (2003-04), there were quite a few reasonable places nearby - East Side didn't get too crazy till further uptown. Or closer to 5th. Lots of delis, a Hale & Hearty, a Pax, and one of my favourite italian places, Fresh Basil's. (or was it Sweet Basil's?) i used to go there at least once a month, and get enough pasta for 2 meals for about $10 - $12. If it's still there, it's on the east side of Lex at around 56th.
It just depends on where you go. But i like that every restaurant must display a menu in their window, so you can decide 1st...
No place better to eat than NYC.
Yes there is..... Lakeview Drive, South China!
I don't mind paying taxes, if I am getting my money's worth: quality public education for children, effective social support system for those down on their luck, and paved roads with no potholes, maintained parks, etc.
I get grumpy when I pay over six thousand in property taxes and have deplorable public schools and an infrastructure that is falling apart from neglect - and as far as paved roads, I would like to see one! All we have is patched roads, and poorly patched at that!
Seandor you should cut and paste your comments and send them to Deval "togther we can" Patrick . Maybe he will help and send some $$ to improve conditions by having a few casino's built. By taking $$ from people who already can't afford to lose it. Unless that money is already earmarked to pay for our illegal alien's college tuitions.
I think it's safe to say we've strayed too far into the political arena!
Adirondack Park:
The Adirondack region boasts over 3,000 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, and a wide variety of habitats, including globally unique wetland types and old growth forests. The heart of the Adirondack Park is the Forest Preserve, which was created by an act of the Legislature in 1885 which stated, “The lands now or hereafter constituting the Forest Preserve shall be forever kept as wild forest lands. They shall not be sold, nor shall they be leased or taken by any person or corporation, public or private.” The state of New York owns approximately 43 percent, or roughly 2.6 million acres of land within the Park’s boundaries. The remaining private lands are devoted principally to forestry, agriculture, and open space recreation. The Adirondack Park is unique in its intricate mixture of public and private lands. About 130,000 people live here year round in its 105 towns and villages. The harmonious blend of private and public lands give the Adirondacks a diversity found nowhere else – a diversity of open space and recreational lands, of wildlife and flora, of mountains and meadows, and people of all walks of life.
Celeste, I'm coming for dinner! What are we having? Mmmmm, I can smell it from here.
I've often thought that my next move will be to the Adirondack area.
Only been there once - just for two days. Look forward to returning.
Did not mean to offend anyone. I get fired up when I think of the way Taxachusetts finds new ways to spend $$ when we have problems as Seandor explained that are continually overlooked.
Parting state fact - Massachusetts lottery brings in over double the revenue of any other state in the union. This is gross $$ not per capita.
On another note is it too eary to start tomato seeds next week? We are off to visit the redsox in ft. myers the week of 11th. And would have to wait until the 17th to begin.
Dear wha,
Put some on now and some when you get back. Given the strange weather we are having, who can say when the last frost will be this spring? YOu will then have two waves of plants to deal with any strange but true weather patterns here in MA.
Martha
Thanks Martha, just needed someone to give me a little push - I think I will start the tomato's, eggplant, and peppers. Give them a good drink and start the rest when we get back. Maybe the leeks too and the .............
Thanks for the gentle reminder, Victor :-)
No problem. Just trying to avoid having the principal calling on us!
Victor that's not the principle in Ferris Bueller's Day Off is it?
Might be!
