Useless Information Part II

West Central, WI(Zone 4a)

We came from here. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/807318/

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Naked Gardening Day---now I have heard everything, Marie!!! That's not for me, either!! LOL

(Zone 7a)

I just got a sample of that in an e-mail. Why Old People Rock is what it was titled. No naked but some nearly so. Wow. Can't figure why gardening that way would be attractive to any one. Bees, hornets, rocks, stickers, thorns, dirt in places it shouldn't be, gawking neighbors...

West Central, WI(Zone 4a)

EXACTLY ! ! ! !

(Zone 7a)

Hey, Marie. I knew somebody would be...ahem...behind me on this.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I wonder if they prune the roses or pick the blackberries in the "buff". That's a little early in the year to be "exposed" - likely to get hypothermia or a cold.

Useless Information - I know just about everything there is to know about the Monkey Puzzle Tree, and often offer info when not requested. ie. The cells are the longest of any tree which gives it good flexibility for use in propellers. There are no Monkies native to it's native habitat. I won't go on as it typically bores people.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

never heard of the Monkey Puzzle Tree--now I want to see a picture of one!! LOL

(Zone 7a)

Isn't that the one that has all the giant thorns on it? Yikes!

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Well, the leaves are like thorns. They look great until you back into one by mistake. Related to the Norfolk Island Pine & Woolemi Pine.

Cool tree.
Speaking of cool, May is not all that warm here usually. I will keep my clothes on thank you.
Too funny.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

I think naked would be the norm here, due to heat and humidity, except for mosquitoes. Big target for them.

Missouri City, TX

Where else but DG could we learn about all this "stuff"

Edited to correct typo, but probably was better before I corrected, eh? LOL

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Oh, Bubba, that looks like a typo but on second thought, I believe you did it on purpose! ☺☺☺ LOL

That Monkey Puzzle Tree is actually a pretty tree, I think--sort of like a Pine tree with "spikes". LOL

West Central, WI(Zone 4a)

I missed Bubba's 'typo'....Too funny.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I think Bubba said that on purpose too.

Yes, the Monkey Puzzle tree has leaves all around its branches. Here's a pic from a seed harvest.

I'd like to know about its 'non' native habitat- come again??

(had to re read and find the typo. LOL)

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

"I'd like to know about its 'non' native habitat- come again??" - you mean like people's front yards?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

"no Monkies native to its native habitat"
Curious about how that came about.
I remember my dad saying there was one near me at a school property that was probably an old estate once, But have wondered if he was mistaken.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

It was overheard at a tea party dedication of the tree at a garden in England that, "It would puzzle any monkey to climb it", and so the name stuck. The seed were discovered by Archibald Menzies, appointed naturalist to Captain George Vancouver, who was served the seed in a dessert at a dignitary dinner of the governor of Chile. He pocketed the seed and grew them on the ship back to England. I've tried the seed and they kinda taste like water chestnut.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Sally, I thought it meant that there were no monkeys native to the habitat of the Monkey Tree. This is getting confusing!! LOL

Drat!! Bubba went and edited his post--now anyone who didn't read it before he "fixed" it won't know what we were talking about. However, the correct spelling if he had done it on purpose would have been "leer". I thought he was trying to say "hear" and he meant to say "learn". LOL If anything, DGers all like a good laugh. Hope you don't mind if we got one at your expense, Bubba. It was all meant in good fun.

Edited to add: that is interesting information about the Monkey Tree and its edible seed.
--See, not so useless after all!

Yer right. No Monkeys in the native habitat of the Monkey Puzzle Tree. The origin of the name is what I was getting at.

Missouri City, TX

No offense taken - just havin' fun, too.

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

If your 2nd toe is longer than your big toe, it is called Morton's Toe. Only about 10% of the population has feet shaped this way, you are special and you probably have trouble finding shoes that fit properly.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

My manager at the nursery just said he has Morton's Toe and, no, he doesn't have a problems buying shoes.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have Mortons toe. My feet are narrow and a womens ten, so you might say hard to buy? Thats the toe that makes me go to the next size.
I read once that Mortons toe means you also should not be a runner because you have other foot structure problems..?

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

My shoe guy says just don't wear heels over 1 inch because our feet roll forward different. He also says it means you are brilliant, haha.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I guess I am one. The toe is just slightly longer, never caused me a problem. I thought everyones second toe was longer, until a couple years ago when I heard about this.
I doubt it makes me smarter though. Maybe it just makes my feet look cuter. I have always been told I have cute feet.

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

my 2nd and 3rd toes are longer, I'm double smart and cute, haha.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes you are. LOL

(Zone 7a)

You should all line up without your shoes so we can see.

Missouri City, TX

You really want to see that?

(Zone 7a)

Hmm...

(Zone 7a)

Sure. Smart AND cute?

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Leave it to you, Celia, to come up with a request for picture--Ha!! ☺☺☺

I, too, thought everybody's second toe was longer until I just read this. I even thought my own second toes were longer but when I looked I discovered that they are not. My big toes and my second toes are the same length! Guess I'm not smart nor cute!! Waaaaaaa!!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

It was told, years ago, that if your second toe was longer, that you would get married young. I did.

(Zone 7a)

Old wives tales? FUN!!!

It was said that if you tied a knot in the corner of you bed sheet, it would keep vampires away.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Whatever works--I surely don't want any vampires close to me! LOL ☺☺☺

P.S. I got married young (18) and my second toe isn't longer.

(Zone 7a)

My big toe is about 1/2 an inch longer than my second, so, I'm not in the "cute and smart" club. :-(

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

I'm wondering where that leaves me, as my toes are diagonal. Big
toe biggest, then the next one a bit shorter, the next one even shorter
and so on.

I did not even realize people had toes that were not like mine
until we moved south. It seems everyone's feet have the second toe
longer than the big toe.

Hmm. We may have to do a toe poll! LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Toe poll! Ha !
Seemed like Earth Shoes were never the shape of my feet, more like 'diagonal'- I took that to mean I was weird.
Morton toe and married at 28
