Conifer forum?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Do you think it would be a good idea to have a separate conifer forum, rather than just part of the trees and shrubs one?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Personally I feel like there's a good balance of conifer and non-conifer discussions on T&S, and while there's a good amount of traffic over there I don't think it's overwhelming, so I wouldn't see the need to separate them.

I would be a proponent of a separate Conifers Forum. It's come up a few times in the past and there appeared to be considerable interest.

Hendersonville, NC(Zone 7a)

I raised this question a while ago, and would still be very interested in a conifers forum. Yes, they get discussed in T&S, but it couldn't hurt to give them their own forum. DG has separate forums for many many types of plants; why not conifers?

Marlton, NJ

I would like to see a Conifers forum too.

Theres so many trees and shrubs it would be nice to see these seperated.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Me too please; while normally I'd not be too much in favour of splitting forums, I think this might help generate more posts on conifers as the forum title will stimulate queries that might otherwise get forgotten completely.

Me too.

I may have been one of the people who suggested this a time or two.

I think a separate conifers forum would get more traffic if everyone knew exactly where to go to discuss conifers.

I hate when people call conifers "evergreens". Not ALL conifers ARE evergreens. Actually, some of my favorite conifers are deciduous.
Thanks,
Mike

You know, some of my favorite conifers are deciduous too. I love the looks of Metasequoia glyptostroboides and have planted Larix laricina and Taxodium distichum for myself.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would definitely be interested in it (and I have Metasequoia and Taxodium), but the overall activity on T & S seems nothing like it was a while back. I'm concerned that we'll end up with two forums with even less activity.

(Zone 10a)

I support the idea having recently discovered american Piceas. They are some of the most beautiful trees & I would love a thread in which to ask & learn about them.

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

Anyone know what happened with this topic? I just stumbled across the thread. I would LOVE a conifer forum on DG. I read other conifer forums on the web and wonder why we can't have one on DG. I love this site and a conifer forum would make it even better!

I've asked previously, too, but I believe that the "powers-that-be" don't believe that there is enough conifer activity to warrent a separate forum.

It can't be that much of an administrative hassle, can it?

(Zone 10a)

There is a trees & shrubs forum here ...

Perhaps ask for a sticky there. It wouldn't hurt to have one for a few different types but it would need to be administered.

Or is that administrated?

It 's not really about administrative hassle...Dave & the admins monitor request threads such as this one to gauge whether they think there'll be enough sustained interest to keep a forum going (they don't want to make a new forum and then hardly have any traffic there, especially in cases where there's an existing forum where the subject can be discussed...as there is in this case with the Trees & shrubs forum) Prior to today I think there were only 6-7 people that posted saying they were interested, and in my experience watching other forum request threads, that's not a high enough interest level. Maybe someone who wants to see this happen could post a link to this thread in the T&S forum and encourage people to come over here and express their support, I imagine most of the conifer fans probably hang out there.

(Zone 10a)

Yeah, that's good advice. Start a conifer thread in T&S & go from there. I'd like to compare ours down here with yours up there. Anything that even looks remotely evergreen, we call a pine but I doubt most Australians would know a real pine if fell on them.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Actually the admins only count "votes" if they're over here in this forum--what I was suggesting was posting a link over there to encourage people to come here and express their interest in case there are conifer fans there who don't watch this forum.

Hendersonville, NC(Zone 7a)

Just found this, and am glad to see that the idea is at least still being discussed among members. I'd still be very interested in a conifers forum if it ever becomes feasible.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

I have previously also asked to simply have the word "conifers" added to the Trees and Shrubs forum name. This, too, was shot down.

If I remember correctly the word "evergreens" came up and since there are broadleaf "evergreens" as well as needled "evergreens", they didn't want to confuse anyone. I'm not sure why "evergreens" was mentioned since I asked for the word "conifers" to be added.
Oh well, I think it's a losing battle.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I wouldn't call it a losing battle, if enough people express interest here then I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be considered--it's no different than when people wanted a Clematis forum or a Passiflora forum separated out from Vines & Climbers. The key is to demonstrate that there's enough sustained interest in this, and I think there are about 9-10 total people who've posted here over a period of 3 1/2 months expressing interest, that's not anywhere close to enough based on what I've seen for other forums that have "made the cut" and been created.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Liz is right ;o) This is definitely not a dead issue - we're keeping an eye on this thread.

Creating a new forum is the easy part. If a forum is bursting at the seams, then it's pretty easy to decide to subdivide it into two (or more) forums.

When that isn't the case, then we tend to take a wait-and-see approach and see how many members come forward to express an interest in the idea.

Lafayette, NJ(Zone 5b)

Im super new but LUV ALL evergreens!!! would be all over a forum dedicated to them...JMHO... for what its worth...

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Just to clarify, the proposal here is specifically for conifers, not evergreens. There are lots of evergreen trees/shrubs that aren't conifers. And some conifers that aren't evergreen :-)

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

I still want the conifer forum too : )

Although I've had a nasty pine tip moth infestation to deal with that is really making me question my sanity.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Well, I would vote for simply changing the Trees and shrubs forum name to: Trees, Shrubs and Conifers. That would be a simple change and may draw more conifer traffic to the forum. If there is enough traffic, then the "conifers" part of the forum could possibly be split off into its own separate forum.

Could we give this a shot, since it would be VERY easy to do? (PLEASE! (:o))
Thanks,
Mike

Yes, thank you so much!!!

Happily - and we are watching this thread to see if there's enough interest to sustain a separate forum.
