An email from my FIL:
When I was a baby, someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a gift and it was one of my favorite toys. Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought Daddy a little cup of 'tea,' which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home. My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch his little princess bring him a cup of tea, because it was, "just the cutest thing!" My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up, then says, "Did it ever occur to you that the only place that baby can reach to get water is the toilet???"
The reason this struck me so is many, many years ago on a fine Saturday morning I sat at the kitchen table chowing down on my favorite breakfast of Rasin Brand. My eldest came in and asked for some as well, so I poured him a bowl and myself another. Shoveling the cereal into my mouth my son stated Dad theres something moving in my cereal. I said eat your cereal theres nothing wrong with it. He repeats Dad! theres something moving in my cereal!
A little bent out of shape I grabbed his bowl and looked at it and sure enough there where hundreds of wheat weevils crawling in the bowl. I looked at my bowl and sure enough I had just eaten a bowl and a half of weevil infested cereal.
Now lets add insult to injury a couple of weeks later I am at my mom's and she said to eat the cake on the counter they weren't going to, sooooo I ate 2 pieces and about an hour later my son asked for some cake and when I placed it on a plate it turned on its side and low and behold it was so green with mold ants could have played golf on it.
Not my month.
Tea set
ha ha ha ha!! So funny!
Gross. Ick. Yuck. Blech.
Years ago DD and I were playing on the computer. It was a 256k (really a long time ago)
anyway, we were playing a game and eating corn nuts. I grabed one and plopped it in my mouth. She giggled and said. "is that a yummy one?"
"mmmm" I said
She repiled " I wondered, 'cuz it fell on the floor and I picked it up with my toes."
Can't even trust a 5 yr old.
Ooooh, nasties in food, that's always a fun subject!
DH and I were eating out, he ordered his usual big salad with chicken. We were eating away and talking when DH suddenly went silent. I looked across the table at him and he was holding his fork in front of his face and staring at it. On his fork was 1/2 of a bee. Only 1/2. His salad was free that day.
I think we may have an issue with salads.........
DH made dinner for us a few summers ago, BBQ and salads fresh from the garden. We were eating in the livingroom, watching TV while having dinner. I was munching away on my salad when something caught my eye in the bowl. It was a slug, crawling up the inside of the bowl. That one really freaked me out. MMMMM, slug slime!
Home all alone today because of the storm..thought I'd check some posts and sure am glad I did...I'm laughing myself silly..thanks for some memories and for the laughs
Great food stories.
A friend was served a salad in a nice restaurant and there was a bug on the plate so he called the waitress over, showed it to her and asked if he could have a clean plate. Of course, she served him the same salad, with the bug, on a different plate.
L.O.L. When my friend's daughter was a teen-ager she found a bug in her organic farmer's market salad one night at dinner. She totally freaked out but the result was that She took over the salad making from then on! So everything would be properly washed.
I love that story of the little girl and her little tea set ! LOL
A friend of mine and I went to a Chinese restaurant once and when we poured a cup of tea, out poured a large cockroach. We called the waitress over and showed her. She did not look a bit surprised. She only stated, "Okay, I bring nother pot." We ate our food carefully, watching what was in it, but never went back there.
At a Chinese restaurant I was served a meal with a huge bolt from one of their kitchen pots in it. When it was pointed out the waiter simply plucked it from the plate and ran into the kitchen with it. The manager apologized and there was no charge for dinner. It was so big there was no chance I could have swallowed it.
Ewww. I'm not sure I would have been able to eat there even once after that.
We didn't.
I know. But, I meant to respond to soapwort's tea pot cockroach story and we were writing at the same time! There was a pizza hut here, a few years back, that got sued for having nuts and bolts in a pizza. A customer broke a tooth and swallowed the bolt and the tooth and so on. It was quite a situation!
I guess I would have rather found a large bolt in my food,( than a cockroach) -Nothin free for us either :(
I got metal shavings in a meal at a fast food place once. When I showed them, they wanted to know if I wanted another bowl. HA! What do you think?
A moth came in a salad at a very nice restaurant once. BOTH our meals were free. (Hmm...salads again.)
I wasn't going to tell the story about my Mom and the Chinese restaurant and the cockroach....but it seems to almost be a theme here! She found it while dining out with a friend at a newer place a few years back....right on the side of her plate. Things like that really freaked Mom out, I don't think she could eat for a few days! Good way to diet though. Ever since then I have trouble eating Chinese food, no matter where it comes from.
This is totally OT, but it's still a funny about food.....
Last winter DH and I went to visit my DB, DSIL and 10 & 8 yr old niece and nephew. We visit them all the time, so this wasn't a big deal. My nephew was having Cap't Crunch while we were there. As we went to leave I started putting on my gloves....and there was a piece of Cap't Crunch cereal in the tip of every finger of my gloves. No one would admit to doing it, but I know it was either my DB or nephew....but I still can't figure out which one did it. I also can't figure out when they did it because my gloves were on the counter in front of me the whole time we were there.
Lol, crunch in the gloves! I love it.
I almost peed myself when I read this. LOL
That's a funny thing to do! l.o.l.
Yeas ago, bought a huge bag of potato chips. When we opened it, they were a bit limp - not crisp - tasty, but almost soggy. Dumped the bag - there was a sprouting potato in the bottom.
Got a bunch of coupons from the manufacturer when I wrote a letter.
A friend of mine once got little bugs in a bag of trail mix. Sealed into the bag and everything. Yuck.
Just extra protein. Learned long ago to transfer powdered or ground products to glass or ceramic sealed containers - that way if you do develop a nice colony of weevils, they can't invade everything. They love spices, too.
These were tiny black things. We didn't know what they were, at first, until they moved.
mmmmmmm bugs.
One Christmas my youngest brother gave me a beautifully wrapped bag of medicinal tea from Chinatown in New York. On closer examination, one of the main ingredients was june bugs! AAAAck! My brother thought it was really funny. Ha. Ha.
Mmmmm.....more bugs! I've eaten bugs before but I knew what they were and purchased them on purpose.
And it's funny. I am laughing and getting creeped out at the same time!
june bugs! guess you're lucky they didn't just give a Latin name, or you might have thought it was some plant....
We use a big refillable container for the cat food, and I was just dumping new bags of food in monthly or so, until finally hubby looked at the empty bin and saw a nice colony of weevil or something worms in the bottom. Oh, OK, wash it once in awhile..
A guy I used to work for had a client who lived in Mexico and he told me once that they have a delicacy that the kids and adults go crazy over. It is some kind of a bug that is coated with some sugary coating which comes in a can. Very expensive and only the wealthy can afford. I'll stick to a snickers bar thank you very much. :)
There are several sites that sell choc covered insects.

Celia, YOU ATE BUGS ON PURPOSE???!!! I always knew you were a bit nutty!!! HA HA HA
When I made crepes for the kids when they were little, pressing on the crepe after fliped would make a squeek sound. I used to tell them it was the bugs in the flour screaming.
They seem to be ok in spite of their childhood. lol
I think if you joke with your kids about stuff like that, they grow up better adjusted.
Yes, T, I DID eat bugs on purpose. The bees were especially good. And crunchy.
OMG! HA HA HA
You're so funny!
Did the bees sting your mouth!!!???!!!HA HA HA HA HA
Not after I bit them first!!! LOL
HE HE HE HE HE You can't get outa your house, but you can eat bees! LOL
Oh myyyyyy..... eating bees....gross. I remember being a little kid and picking an apple off the tree and eating it....then there was half a worm. I kept screaming and screaming. MY Dad says to me...Honey it is to late now it is dead and can't hear you.
Haha....it was not at all funny then...but it sure is now.
Nosey Question....who can't get out of the house and why? I am still trying to figure this place out and whos who.
That would be me. Hi. On another thread I was complaining about not being able to get out because of all the stupid snow. ☺
How much snow do you have?
We have had 70" so far this year, but luckily we had 2 thaws and only a couple feet on the ground. But, do not fear, more is on the way.
We get our most snow it seems in March, so we are not out of the woods yet. (70" is on the high side of normal for our area, go 100 miles north of here and they could get that in one snowfall.)
