drought

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

According to the paper Lanier is around 42%. Our streams and creeks are full and the ditches have standing water. If Lanier could just turn off the tap (or slow it down) for a few weeks....maybe it would fill back up.

We got a ton on Friday and today

Thanks

Down here on the coast we're getting plenty of rain so far this year. I'm pretty much in Savannah if your wondering.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Hey I got rained on in Savannah last week and now I'm getting rained on at home in Atl! lol We had a nasty storm yesterday. We have 15 huge old oaks in the yard and they drop limbs if you look at them wrong, so I'm suprised we don't have any roof damage. I pulled one limb out of the ground, impaled straight in. crazy!

Good think you weren't under it!

I found this at the Cobb County site this morning:

Landscaping

1. Effective March 1, 2008, hand watering, defined as one person with one hose with a shut off nozzle, will be allowed for 25 minutes a day, on the odd/even watering schedule. Even and unnumbered addresses may water Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and odd addresses may water on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays between the hours of 4:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Irrigation systems may not be run under this exemption.

2. Effective April 1, 2008, an exemption is provided for new landscape installations (excluding aeration and over seeding).
a. These new installations may be watered for a period of 10 weeks following installation on the odd/even watering schedule.
b. Only newly - installed landscaping may be watered by irrigation system; all other watering must follow the hand watering exemption.
c. Irrigation systems may be used to water newly - installed landscaping, but only between the hours of 4:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
d. In order to qualify for a new landscape exemption, the customer must enroll in the Urban Agriculture Council’s online Water Conservation Class at www.urbanagcouncil.com.
Forms obtained from the course along with a Cobb County Landscape Exemption form PDF, and a purchase receipt , must be sent to:
The Water Efficiency Program
660 South Cobb Dr.
Marietta, GA 30060
Or Faxed to 770-419-6478

e. Only one new landscape exemption (as discussed above) will be permitted per planting season per residence. Planting season is defined as September – March, and April - August.
f. Failure to submit the forms and receipt may result in a water ban violation and possible discontinuation of an irrigation account.
g. Aeration and over - seeding will not qualify for a new landscape exemption at this time.

3. Effective April 1, 2008, new home construction will have 10 weeks to water newly installed landscape on the above odd/even schedule, for the purpose of erosion and sedimentation control. A builder may choose to heavily mulch a property instead, until water conditions improve.

4. Irrigation- only accounts found in violation of the outdoor restrictions will be terminated and locked off until the end of Drought Response Level 4.

Hurray! At least now we can legally water our most special plants.

I wonder how long landscaping companies will survive under these ridiculous rules. Pike's is on the chopping block, who will be next? I would like to get some trees and shrubs but won't spend a dime until the state figures out their water woes. I don't mind if the whole lawn dies but I sure hate to see trees, shrubs, and perennials bite the dust.

Mother Nature has dealt us a bad hand the last couple of years.

I surely need to get a barrel for this wonderful rain we have been getting.

I need a huge pond. Maybe we will get a lot of rain this year and fill the lakes, etc. but someone will get flooded if this happens. Can't beat Mother Nature.

Almost 3 years ago this is what happened from hurricane Dennis (July 13, 2005)

Oh, don't I know it, hcmcdole. Dennis got us bad. Been here 14 years and never flooded but flooded 2 years in a row. Now when it rains really hard as it has lately, I'm terrified it is going to happen again.

In fact, I sort of gave up in my yard after that and lost control over the weeds and such and now I can't get it back.

Is that picture close to you?

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

About 4 miles from us - Garrett Road. Here is one closer to us - Brown Road where the creek is behind our subdivision. Sweetwater Creek floods a lot of times over the years and this was no exception. Thorton Road was closed during this period.

I don't remember the hurricane that shut down I75 at Macon many years ago and flooded Albany.

Flood or drought, take your pick.

I bought a 50 gallon rain barrel this year on E-bay for around $50.00 the seller's name was: cajunsteve777. At $50 it's a steal. I have also purchased PAM crystals(Polyacrylamide) to add to the soil in the flower beds. The "crystals" soak up water and swell to around 200 times their original size. The crystals are also supposed to help keep the soil broke up and aerated as they form air pockets as they release the water. I have never used these crystals before but they sound like a really good idea I'm not so sure I would jump into using them for anything edible but don't see any harm in growing flowers with it.

Here is a pic of the dry crystals:
