I have also purchased PAM crystals(Polyacrylamide) to add to the soil in the flower beds. The "crystals" soak up water and swell to around 200 times their original size. The crystals are also supposed to help keep the soil broke up and aerated as they form air pockets as they release the water. I have never used these crystals before but they sound like a really good idea I'm not so sure I would jump into using them for anything edible but don't see any harm in growing flowers with it.
