LOL Pepper!!
Hydrogen Peroxide.
Our flower show had a jazz theme..realy nice I managed to not go crazy buying plants my MIL made sure lolol!
KC is really known for it's jazz and blues. Alot of good music up there. Once alot of those areas are cleaned up I might go see a few with a few friends. There is one I really want to check out called Mutual Musicians Foundation. Just a place where they go hang out after a show or something and jam. They can jam til like 5am I think it is. Supposed to be neat.
Ahhh jamming til 5am the good ol days :)
Yep. :~)
Aloha! Looks as if the blooms might open tomorrow (the 14th). Will keep you posted.
I have some MG seeds that I want to plant, so I guess we could try them both ways to see what happens. They are old seeds I got in a swap last year, so don't know if it would show a true outcome.
Aloha Jeanne, great idea to do an experiment, do let us know what happens!
Will do!
Well, looks like I missed it by just a tad.
C
Come on sweet MGs...stay warm, cozy and curled up for one more day! LOL
LOL Ashley. . .2 more days for me please. Stay cozy but not too warm.
We have a winner! First flower in this pot opened this morning, good guess Carol!
I think Carol is still off island so I will probably have to wait for her return to claim her prize. There will be some cuttings for everyone else who played along in the contest if they want them, please let me know. Waiting on Carol as the Dept of Ag people get really grumpy if I go down for package inspection too often, so I am planning on a mass mailing.
Off to work, have a lovely day everyone.
Aloha
Jen
Don't forget to post a pic when you get a chance. I would love to see it! Do you have the blue and white in seperate pots or the same pot?
Jen, did you mention what color was your first bloom? I may have missed it. I hope mine will take off soon. . .it's getting warmer and warmer here, but the nights are still cool. Are you offering MG cuttings? That's very generous of you.
Yes, Jenny - post a pic! What color??
Oh yes, I did take a picture this morning - the first one is white! Sorry but I was running so late that I didn't have time to download before work, will do as soon as I get home in about 1 hour.
Acually Karma (still love that name!) I was offering cuttings of brugs for all who participated in the contest, if they want them...I don't know if MG's even can have cuttings taken, and if they can we need Shari's super duper ones!
I do have a TREE Morning Glory Ipomoea Carnea or Ipomoea Fistulosa (not sure what the real name is) which needs some serious hacking down, and I would be happy to add a cutting of that to the box too. Will include a picture of the Tree MG this evening, but there is a good picture of the Tree MG on "Onaleeseeds.com", probably much better than I will take, also cultural info. Just got to learn how to do that thing to send you somewhere else - oh yes hyperlink.
Yeah..my MG tree is very lanky like..buy it's blooming clusters right now.
Which color have you got Randy - mine is the lavender...It never stops blooming here, but it is an awkward looking thing, I am going to take mine down to stubs!
Aloha, everyone!
I am not into morning glories at all. However, I love sprouting lotus seeds Nelumbo Nucifera. I am one of those gardeners that files a section of the hard shell away until I reach the endoderm. I add some HP to my water and I always get good germination rates. Then, when they have sprouted, I introduce them to the canal, hoping to get lotus to grow along the edge. The turtles, the carp and a host of other aquatic herbivores quickly find them and eat them. It's OK... one of those days, I'll get a plant established in there. I just know I will.
Take care, all.
Sylvain, aka Pu'ole.
How wonderful. Everybody and Sylvain, too.
Jen, please put something in my April box with the MG tree. I don't have opportunities for such.
Sylvain, I have a very small pond. Anything you could contribute would be great.
My world of swaps is just now getting started. Hopefully, by the end of this summer I will have something someone would want,
Christi
Hmmmm, let's see...your cheerful attitude, your fighting spirit, you brutal defense of all you care for, your resoursefulness (sp?), your enthusiasm, generosity....okay, I'll trade!
I wholeheartedly second everything Shari said!
Aloha my Polarbear! So very nice to hear from you, I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. Lovely to hear of your efforts with the Lotus, do you think the HP helps with the germination? The only way to defeat those critters is in mass planting!
Rather later than I thought I would be from work, but here is our bloom!
Hello, everyone.
I was working at my desktop computer last night when one of my hard discs failed. Bummer.
Luckily, I have 2 hard discs. One mirrors the other so no data should be lost in the process of replacing the faulty disc. Nonetheless, as a precaution, I am using my laptop computer this morning. It's brand-new and I have to get used to using it. So far, so good. Various internet resources tell me that I could still use my desktop without any harm but I am very shy with that kind of thing. I'll wait until I have changed the faulty disc later today before using the desktop again. But you nice people didn't come here to hear about my hardward problems, did you? Sorry if I digress. Off-topicness is so easy to fall into. So is ending sentences with a preposition: Guilty! What would my english teacher say?
Lotus seeds are easy to germinate. I guess scoring the hard shell helps speed up germination more than the H2O2 but it certainly can't hurt. Lotus seeds have germinated for me with an almost 100% rate in plain water and boosted water. They are very easy. Christi, it would be my pleasure to send you a couple seeds for your pond. Please D-mail me your address.
As far as mass planting of lotus, you must remember they are invasive; highly invasive. I am in love with large, perennial, invasive, toxic plants. The lotus is not toxic but no plant is perfect. My former garden was described as "Alice in wonderland on acid"; how I miss that garden at times! I don't want to overwhelm the canal but one plant would be nice, right in front of my condo. Also, a mass planting would result in a virtual salad bar for all those acursed aquatic herbivores. A pox on them and off with their heads, I say. No, I think my purpose will be better served by perseverance.
Take care, all. I have to go read up on how to change a hard disc but I digress again.
Aloha.
Sylvain, aka Pu'ole.
Sylvain, I enjoyed your last post. Do you have pictures of your lotus (what's the plural form for lotus, lotuses? loti?)? It's a gorgeous flower.
Jen, thanks so much. Sending you dmail.
I believe I see two MG blooms. That was really quick from seed to bloom. I worked on my "pond" yesterday, Sylvain, and when I put the water lily pots back in the koi attacked it. The can tear up a good plant in less time than it takes me to plant it. Although I haven't fed them much this winter they have really grown. I have 6 and they may have to have one of two move next door as my pond isn't large enough. (I'm working on my Ernest Hemingway style of writing, one sentence a paragraph long. hahah) Whoops. There is mama cardinal in one of my herb pots. Just planted it yesterday and she is having a feast. Oh well, there is always more seed.
Sylvain, OT is what I do best,
Christi
"Although I haven't fed them much this winter they have really grown."
Christi, my first thought was, no wonder your koi attacked your lilies. They were starving because you hadn't fed them much this winter. I see you meant your lilies not being fed. I'm a dork.
No. You are correct that I did not feed them this winter. They are in a state of dormancy from about Nov. till March and do not eat. They always dig up the water plants. Part of their being nosey little kids.
Wow, really, I had no idea. Don't know much about koi. So much for trying to be funny. . .
Aloha!
Lots of Koi ponds here, although I only have shubkins in mine. Interesting to note that most of the Koi ponds that I see here have no plants in at all. I am not sure if that is because Koi are famously destructive to plant material or because you are more able to see their beauty in open water. I have read that people put some kind of mesh over the tops of the "soil" in their underwater pots to stop the Koi from digging and uprooting the plants. Do they eat the foliage too Christi?
Sorry to hear of your 'puter woes Pu'ole, I live in dread of something going wrong with mine - every time the kids or grandkids come they clean out everything for me, shaking their heads, muttering to themselves, and asking me how I got into such a mess - it's standard fare here, food in exchange for computer tune ups! A garden called Alice in Wonderland on Acid - LOL! You mentioned that you now live on a canal, does it go out to open water and do you ever see Manatee (sp?).
Hope you all have a lovely day.
Jen
Jenny - yes, I was wondering about the manatee as well.
As I am drinking my first cup and waking up, you all are well into your day. These time changes are very odd. Make me feel like a vampire one minute, and a slug-a-bed the next!
Karma - I thought it was funny. Everyone with Koi always has all these strange stories to tell...I think I'll stick with Nemo.
Happy day everyone!
Yokwe,
Shari
Have really missed you, Randy.
LouC
Me too.
My Parents are coming in late tonight...!
How fun Randy!!! I am sure they will be duly impressed with your home, and your incredible garden. Must be great folks - raised a great son!
They are the coolest!
They usually spend most of their time on the deck..reading. They love the house, and love to garden. Good thing I saved weeding the front garden huh? lol
Two extra pair of hands! Woo Hoo!!!!
Send those hands up here this summer.
Neat. Tell them your fan club said hello.
LouC
