big flower pots

Greensboro, AL

Was wondering if big flower pots would not be just as good as EB's to grow vegetables in? I have made several EB's already but got to thinking I have raised tomatos in containers for years and people have raised flowers in flower pots for years. Anyway I just thought I would pass this along. Sometimes you can't see the ocean for the water.

Oh yes, I have a friend who even grows carrots in a deep flower pot.

We grow Sweet 100 tomatoes in two boxes, one on each side of the garage entrance. The neighbors all know it and it's amazing how often they stop over to chat while standing by the boxes and they know they're always welcome to all they can eat.

Is that home made? It looks great. Could you please give me the measurements and what you use for soil?

I'd have to go out and measure but yes, it was made by DH. For soil we used a mix of our own compost, Fafard's container mix and Epsom salts with 5-10-5 and Milorganite.

Be right back.

Johnny's Seeds has a 14" self-watering pot at a decent price:

Doesn't give the depth nor size of water resevoir however. JS says you can grow tomatoes in it and that is certainly true. I grew Micro-Toms in 4" pots . Never got around to planting out a Black Cherry I had in a 7" self-watering container and it tossed out a dozen or so tomatoes. However the Black Cherries I did plant out grew to be over 14 feet tall and produced hundreds of fruits.
