Newbie seeder needs help

OK wise souls, call me cheap, but I just transfered a flat of petunias to six packs. The seeding medium looks perfectly fine to me to use again...yea or nay? I am going for another flat of petunias if that is of any consolation.

What a great snowy day to be in my greenshouse with laptop nearby!

I am totally guilty of reusing soil. Never had any problems. You could always cook it to kill possible uglies.
I never did though. :-)

hi...I've been gone for a while so didn't catch your response. I just ran out of seed starter and still have mega marigolds I want to seed so I thought i would try the re-using and see if it works. Thanks for the reassurance.

I think critter suggests that you cook it up nice and steamy in your microwave, just in case. You might dmail her to get the details. She never reuses without sterilizing it. Me, I'd probably just slap it all together, wet it and go at it....lol

Who was it that fried their microwave cooking soil??? Me, I overcooked a potato & it burst into FLAMES and destroyed the microwave! They call me the Potato Slayer at my sister's (it was HER micowave, on the eve of wedding at her house!!! hehehe)

Perhaps you should try a more conventional method of cooking your spuds, tater killer!!!lol

Well... you can understand my sis's reluctance to allow me in their kitchen!

I have never sterilized soil. Now if you had a plant die in it with root rot or something- well then I'd dump that in the garden.
Now I want directions on slaying potatos so I can stay out of the kitchen LOL

Well, I just bought a new microwave and it isn't going to be seeding mix I fix in there. I did reuse some of my old mix....late one night I was getting ready to seed a new flat and decided I was too tired to work with the seeds so, after having already remixed my previsously mixed seeding mix, I just stuck the flat with the filled cell packs in a trash bag and tucked the edges under so it would stay moist. About two days later when I removed the plastic bag I had random spouts throughout the flat. Now, I have no clue what is sprouting but it will be fun to find out...Just yesterday I used quite a bit of recycled seed mix so I will be anxious to see if my intended seeds appreciate it.
PS: I do boil my water when preparing my seeding mix and most seeds seems to love the steamy mix.

Potatoes... just turn 'em on high and microwave WAY PAST done until they burst in flames... or at least it worked for me! LOL, did I mention we were having my son's WEDDING at her house the next day???

Hi Fairywinkle~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~waving at neighbor. I do reuse my soil for young plants etc. Once it has been outside or used for large plant transplanting, I toss it in the roadside gardens.
If you haven't checked yet, you may want to pop in the Upper Midwest Garden forum. The Round-up will be held in Madison again--so handy for me; and a chance to meet neighbors.
