What is you favorite bands, songs, or singer?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - I was not comparing, just adding a classic musical act! Like Peter Lemongello or Zamfir. I loved the Monkees as a kid and still like a few songs.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

the monkees had a great silly show, and recorded some songs by good pop writers...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Neil Diamond and the guy who just died.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh my you guys bring back memories. Hate rap, its like chinese water torture, drip drip drip, I'm sorry but it gives me a headache and can find nothing pleasing about it. No actual singing ,melody or real instruments with feeling or individual talent as far as I can tell. Love Moody Blues, Eagles, Queen, Beach Boys, Dave Matthews Band, The Stones and most any rock music. Used to like folk music way back when,Dillon, Mamas and Papas. Like most of the old Motown stuff too. Well I guess thats what they say, you know your getting old when you can't stand the current music. :)

is that one of "your" songs, three?

North Augusta, ON

I believe it is.

: )

I was a big Herman's Hermits fan.

Loved them!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How about the Bay City Rollers? Or The Knack? Both were hyped to be bigger than the Beatles. (So was ABBA, by the way.)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

My first concert was Janice Joplin. Opening act was Gordon Lightfoot.
Seems like most folks here are either heavy metal or soft rock. Not too many of us in between.

I like the Indigo Girls & Norah Jones a lot. They are as contemporary as I get.

Al, I think Sgt Pepper's was the most "important", innovative album the Beatles made but it's not one I listen to a lot. Too much fooling around. Abbey Road is a good later one.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I assume you mean too many studio tricks and synthesizers, etc., Dave. I heard nothing about hanky panky between / among them.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wise guy!
Actually, I think what I said is more true of Magical Mystery Tour. My bad.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree about Abbey Road. It was the last time they were really the Beatles.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

That was their last, I think. I believe they knew it & made another good one as a goodbye. The one before that, Let it Be, while it has that beautiful song is one of their worst (I think). You could tell they were struggling

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh yes - the film was hard to watch. Like seeing a marriage break up.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Quoting:
Seems like most folks here are either heavy metal or soft rock. Not too many of us in between.

...and then there is me.
Other than David Bowie, there appears to be no one on my absolute ultimate list on anyone else's.
not to say there aren't others that were listed that i love - Ella, the Beatles (well, who doesn't?), America, the Doors, Pink Floyd, the Eagles, Creedence...
and for jazz: Dianne Reeves!

no one else wants to admit to a personal song, eh?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Love Stinks?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i knew i should never have gotten into this discussion.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Actually I don't have one song that is IT for me. I have a number of faves, including Hey Jude, Bohemian Rhapsody and many others. I am definitely not into the either hard or soft rock camps. I even like some chants.

North Augusta, ON

Speaking of chants, anybody remember Buffy St. Marie??

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Al, you mentioned an Elton John concert. In 1976 I went to his 4th of July concert here in MA (America's 200th birthday) at the Patriot's stadium. I remember when he went to sing Your Song, he said that would be the last time he would ever sing it in concert (didn't say why).

Well, 10 years later in Brussels, Belgium I went to his concert there, and guess what song he sang?

I went to a bunch of Christian concerts in the 80's. The only other regular concerts I went to were U2 and Peter Gabriel - only because I went with an old boyfriend.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Amy, I may have missed your ultimate list, but I like everyone you named above. You're big on musical theatre. Have you ever heard of Paul Simon's Capeman? It was dropped quickly, I think because it was too controversial. But I think the music is great. Very different NY gang lyrics than west Side Story!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like show tunes too. Most of the American pop standards came from Broadway and films. Berlin, Porter, Gershwin, etc.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I'm not big on shows, but my 15-yr-old is. My sis has taken her to see Phantom and Cats. She recently saw a boot-leg copy of Wicked in her Chorus class at school! She often listens to the Show Tunes channel on Comcast Digital. She absolutely loves Pirates of Penzance, and owns Grease and Phantom. I even let her go see Sweeney Todd (J. Depp).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How did she like S Todd? Haven't heard too much about it.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

She absolutely loved it! She borrowed the soundtrack from a friend, and made me listen to it. Depp's got a pretty good voice. I would like to see it myself.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So would I, but I rarely go to the movies. They come out on dvd so quickly now anyway.

North Augusta, ON

hmmm...Depp's got a pretty good everything as far as I'm concerned :))

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like him, but was disappointed with Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

That's how I feel - between the price of the ticket and the popcorn (a must), it's really not worth it.

I've actually seen 3 movies this past year, which is alot for me - Oceans 13, Pirates 3, and Shrek 3.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I though he was good in Charlie, even though it was written a bit odd.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Looks like race results!

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

I enjoy musicals also. Especially the old ones like The King & I.
Just about any Rogers & Hammerstein.

And hymns... the old fashioned ones I grew up with.
I also like marching band music - like Sousa.

Nancy

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I'm with you, Nancy - nothin' like an old-fashioned hymn to get you going!

My dd has the animated King and I - and I love watching it with her.

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

For me, the King & I HAS to be with Yul Brynner.
I saw him on Broadway - the last time he performed the roll on stage.
It was the best!

Nancy

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Dave - my utterly unremarked upon list was posted on feb 1, at 10:22 pm.
Sue - there is an animated King and I? With the original R&H songs, or something else? That is my mom's favourite show - i'm not much of an R&H fan myself, though i admire them, and understand their importance historically.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I love Harry Chapin, Sondheim, Lerner & Lowe and Patti Smith is classic.

I thnk everyone is so excited to bring up their favorite music, this thread just flew. Could have been several threads:
Head Banger
Musicals
jazz
Beatle favorites, etc. etc

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Amy, yes it does have R&H music. I think it's a Warner Bros. movie. Definitely not Disney. No famous voices either.
