How about a gardeners chat?

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

Is this possible? Or is the scum that chat room regularly attract a bad strike? I think it would be fun to talk to all the folks we trade with in a chat room.

Nepthys, I am not at all clever on the computer, so can you please explain to me how a chat room works? I do not have a microphone hooked up to my computer. Would I have to buy one for a chat room?

My daughter tells me if I get a microphone hooked up to my computer I can phone all over the world, NO CHARGE, even to people who do not have a computer? Would be great if that is the case, I could phone my 90 year old Mom in Australia!

I think a chat room here at Dave's Garden would be a GREAT idea!!! How fun!!! As far as chatting goes, gardendragon: you just type back and forth to each other. If you get the microphone, yes you can talk back and forth in chat rooms I know, but I'm not sure about using the computer to talk to someone else who's on a phone. Never tried that. I spose there's probably a way to do it tho, since this is all over the phone lines anyway! I don't have a microphone myself, but I've recently been in a chatroom where others are using theirs (I type in the room, but can hear their voices), and it sounds pretty muffled to me. Not a real clear conversation like talking on the phone. Maybe that depends on the microphone tho. Maybe someone else has some experience with that.

I have been hoping for a chatroom too. I used the one at Garden.com but they have shut down. In this type of chatroom you do not often get nasty spammers. If you do, there is always an ignore button you can click on and then you can't see their posts anymore, so they leave because no one responds to them. The other best way to get rid of these pornographic wonders is simply to not respond, act like they don't bother and just go on with your garden chat. If you want to see how a chat works (although this one is slow because you have to click on send with each message instead of just touching enter), go to www.hortmag.com It shouldn't be too much trouble or expense to seet up a chatroom, my nephew did it for our family.

Chat room would be great, and I think we would get people of high caliber, all of us being gardeners and all.......
I used to go to the garden chat room at Yahoo, it was quite fun.
Dave, any chance you could wave your magic wand and amke it happen????

thanks/cheers

I'm not much of a chatter myself ... but on my home page @ msn I have a neat little chat room feature that I've never put to use. I don't even know exactly how it works but if ya'll like to try it out it'd be Ok with me. I wonder if I have to be present @ the chat? Anyway ... I think anyone wanting to use it would have to sign up to be a member to my stupid little "msn community" - (population 8 !!). It's no big deal... I get an e-mail when somebody applies and have to approve their membership. We could set a day & time to try it out if anyone is game.

Hmm why not just post icq#'s or msn or ims#'s or whatever people have...then everyone get together for a chat.

(Zone 6a)

I would like a chat room capability.
I never reinstalled ICQ when I reformatted. takes up space.
I think it would be cool to chat with some gardeners.I chat on napster some times but they are mostly kid's.

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

I chat entirely too much... lol

Chris- you chat on Napster? I have some songs from them and feel like a criminal! I am way confused as I thought there was already a chat feature here. Um- isn't this what we're doing now? Don't mind me-I still have so much to learn. I just got my PC a few months ago and I'm still trying to figure it out. It's getting better, though- I'm not quite so intimidated having something in my home so much smarter than I am!:) There are some who would say"that's not hard" but that's another story!:)

There are several free sites you can check out for making free phone calls. Try going online and checking it out. I use dialpad.com.here in the U.S. You need a PC, sound and a mike. My son-in-law set it up so I am not sure about the software. Just contact the company for info. I can make free calls anywhere in the continental U.S. I think they are working on setting up free calls to Europe or elsewhere but that is something I haven't needed so haven't checked it out. The calls have a few annoyances but are free and therefore I tolerate them. It is kind of like the old calls we used to get from China and other parts of the world. There is a slight delay in the sound and that makes it a little hard to get accustomed to but in time you won't mind it. You get used to it and learn how to ignore it.
