Let's be honest....what have you bought so far this winter?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I was just looking at one yesterday.....Pieris japonica 'Variegata' . I love the color of the leaves!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I saw that too - it's nice. Mine is called 'Dorothy Wycoff'.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Celeste, I also ordered some Yellow M.G. seeds - from Diane's. I'm glad you mentioned the yellow bells - I looked them up and noticed they're called Esperanza. I'll tell my brother about them, that's his daughter's name!

I've always liked the pieris. The entrance to a development here had a few , but the landscapers pulled them out and planted a new display. If I'd known that, I would have asked for them!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Don't you hate when they do that without notifying people? There's a landscaped small college close to me. Every spring they plant prechilled daffodils, then rip them out (and throw them away, I think) and replace them with tulips, ditto, replace them with begonias, ditto, impatiens figure in there somewhere I think, but why don't they AT LEAST put up a sign "tossing plants tomorrow afternoon, be there or be square"?

x, C

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I agree, Carrie!

When I looked up the Yellow Bells, it says they grow 3' - 6' high, and 3' to 4' wide. But grown as an annual, I don't think they'd have time to get that big, unless you pot it and bring it in for the winter.

It also said that Indians used the wood to make bows with, and in Mexico a beer was made from its roots!

Thomaston, CT

Am on the town's beautification committee, & we routinely rip out, especially daffs--but people have stopped cars & asked for them, & we've given them away--we never thought of notifying first, but that's a good idea! I'm not familiar with yellow bells, but I love tall plants--not enough of them around.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

ROBIN -

I might even drive to Ct. for free daffodils, and I'll bring you my too tall coneflowers!

nada. zip. zilch.

btw - i will have liriope babies if anyone wants some. & i can probably do a couple divisions of happy returns DL if anyone doesn't already have more than they want. (could be worse, landlords could have put in stella d'oros.)

good luck with the pennyblacks, pixie. i love "black" flowers and foliage. i really really wanted mine to grow and got nothing, but i am not so good with the seed thing. i couldn't even get forget-me-nots to grow enough to bloom.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have an iris that is pretty close to black. I 'attempted' to order something today. Called and left a message for Tiny Treasures but they did not call back. Two more cryptomerias and 'Cameo' quince.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Amy, I'd love some Liriope - make a note!

Celeste, have you seen seen these at Thompson & Morgan? Look neat! They're Dianthus Black & White Minstrels, annual, 15", 30 seeds - $4.25.

I have my book Sue, i'll have to check them out. Goodness, I can't look! I have a ton of stuff coming already. SUE...YOUR NOT HELPING!!!!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Don't mention it, Celeste, any time I can be of assistance . . . !

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Save room for all the beautiful blue flowers, Celeste.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I bought some more already Pirl! Going to try those Poor Mans Weather Glass, they are the cutest little blue flower. I hope they are pretty of a blue as on the seed pack. They look it on PF's.

Those are pretty Celeste.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Very nice.

You can be our resident "Queen of the Blues"!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Where did you get them, Celeste?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

At Agway in Winslow, Maine. Hee hee

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Agway does have a nice selection of seeds and their stores seem prominent in the northeast.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

None anywhere near here. I hear the Green Acres music when you guys mention it.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Most of our Agways here are gone now. I did like them, but they went under new management and the prices were crazy, and shortly after they went under.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Do blueberry bushes count? I've ordered 6 and am looking at some orchard trees too...
:)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh Yes, they count! If you have to dig the dirt and plant it, it counts!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We have two Agways in 22 miles but one is so much better than the other. Of course, it's not the one a mile away.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

I ordered my usual ton of vegetable and annual seeds.
Plants: 1 Jolly Bee geranium, 1 Japanese painted fern, 1 northern lights grass, 1 zebra grass, 3 stargazer lilies, 1 Jackmanii clematis, 3 heucheras (amethyst mist, peach flambe, can can), 1 be-bop rose (couldn't resist), 2 daylilies (purple d'oro, jungle princess), 6 royal helleborus, 1 rosemary plant. You guys have been a bad influence on me.

I would absolutely love to add a Japanese Maple to my garden, but I just don't have the space for it. I don't plan on purchasing anything this year except for some annuals for my containers and maybe a few more hakenechloa grasses for one particular spot....but I really think I'm out of room, at least in the back yard :( Guess I will have to wait and see how things look this Spring/summer.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You have room for a JM! Many dwarf sizes available and you can use it in a container and bring it to a sheltered place for winter.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm finding room for 3 JM's when I didn't think I had room, thanks to Victor!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Uh oh!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

No, not uh-oh, oh yeah!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor is affecting most of us (but in a good way).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll take credit if they do well but will evade responsibility if they don't! Hee hee. At work I would say other engineers screwed up, but I only made boo-boos!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Pirl!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

What constitutes a "sheltered place", Victor? Would I have to drag it into the garage or something?

And what is the largest size JM you think you could get away with in a container? I have this one area that I think aa JM would look great in, and probably do well....unfortunately, there is a huge stump in the ground there from an old oak, and there are a bunch of suckers from that....I call it the "sucker tree". I'd like to cut the suckers off, much to my husband's chagrin. The problem is that I can't plant anything there because of the huge stump. So I was wondering if putting a large container on that spot is an option...

Another thing I wouldn't mind replacing with a JM is a barberry...but again, that grew naturally on top of a big piece of ledge, and the roots just found a way....it's not like I could dig a whole up there and plant something. It would have to be a container plant or tree.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, in your zone I would bring it into a garage. As for the size - really depends on how big a container you want to move around. The ultimate size of the tree will be smaller in a container than in the ground.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A hand truck (dolly) is a huge help in moving any large potted plant to and from the garage each year. We do it with the standard roses.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Well shoot, Victor. We have a tiny garage, so that won't work. No way to keep it outside in the container? Even like a really big container? My inlaws have a barn we could use, but I can't see my husband being too keen on borrowing the truck from work and hauling it over to his parents' barn every year. Argh!

This is the sucker tree in question that I think I want to remove. Most of the shade in my garden comes from tall trees around the property. The sucker tree, however, makes some really dense shade behind it..I feel, too dense, even for my hostas. Plus, I think it might be nice to see the trunk of the large pine that is obscured by the oak foliage . (the large pine is in the back corner of the yard). What would you guys do in this situation, if this was your garden?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'd get rid of the tree if there's nothing objectionable behind the picket fence.
