Let's be honest....what have you bought so far this winter?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Good grief!

Well in response to the original topic of the thread: What have you bought?

Not enough! still waiting for the winning ticket! I keep getting more and more catalogues and I want everything!

I keep reminding myself "enough, enough, enough . . . "

Hee hee - what's your one favorite typr of iris, Polly?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Siberian. With the Japanese, and water irises not far behind.

I'm very excited about the new eyeshadow irises, a cross between iris pseudacorus, and iris ensata (Japanese).

Pretty - will that grow in my pond??

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Definitely.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Michaela, sadly, i have found, one has to buy lottery tickets if one wishes to win the lottery!

boo hoo.

well that sucks!

Don't it just!

Hi Polly,
Is a "Louisiana Iris" the same type as a "Japanese Iris"? they look very similar.
deb

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi Deb,

No. Japanese iris are in the classification or series Laevigatae, and Lousiana or LA iris are in the series Hexagonae. Some do look similar. Both are beardless iris. The La's are mostly native to the US. They come in a wide array of colors, where the JIs only come in white, violet, putple, mauve and pink. Japanese survive cooler temps, and LAs can take more alkaline soil. They both like a lot of water.

Both are surely beautiful.

So last night I organized all the orders and listed them on one sheet so I know what is coming from where and when. I am now in official panic and OMG what was I thinking mode. Where on earth am I going to put all of these plants? I had a spot for them all when I ordered them, but you know that the reality of space in the garden is usually way less than is in my head in the middle of a snow storm sitting at the keyboard and looking at all those pretty pics of gorgeous flowers. Well it looks like another year of squeezing and shuffling and poking and prodding. Ain't gardening fine! :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have the same problem..I have alot of land but not ready for 50 new plants! I will be building a new bed as soon as the ground is warm enough!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

It really is a sickness isn't it. LOL A fun one though. I am half dreading the trip to the nursery for potting soil and a few supplies I need, you know what will happen there. They will have all the spring lovelies out just wanting to jump in my wagon. I am determined to be strong, well maybe a pot o' pansies or blooming daffs, they don't really count right.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Surprisingly, this is the first year that I am not in that situation - at least not yet. Only have three orders placed. No perennials so far - I'm sure that will change. Still early for my annuals order. Part of it is running out of space and needing to see how last year's stuff returns.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No, they don't count! LOL

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I have plenty of room, thank God, but my problem is the ground is so rocky/gravelly that I don't like to use the rototiller on it so I dig by hand.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I am running out of places to make new beds too. Made two last year and expanded another. I have that wonderful rocky gravel here too. I would like to have a dollar for every wheel barrow full of rocks I have dug out of gardens here. Some places there isn't any soil at all, just rocks jammed in together. It is getting too much to really take care of all by myself too. Does any of this stop me when I see a pretty plant, never.

Quoting:
well maybe a pot o' pansies or blooming daffs

If you read my article on planting forced daffodil bulbs http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/747/
you now realize that you can replant those, not toss them! (The Society to Prevent Cruelty to Bulbs, SPCB)

I see a few garden rooms in my future - I'm trading in DD#1 for - well, for college loans, basically, but I will sit in my first garden room and contemplate the size of my/her debt!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Can't think of a better way to contemplate, Carrie!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That is a good suggestion Carrie and nice article. I have a mixed pot of bulbs that my DB gave my mom for Christmas that are out in garage now by a sunny window starting to turn brown. I had them in the house until this week to try to keep the foliage going to feed the bulbs. I will try to plant them this spring. Sometimes it works well, some times not so much. The daffs are the easiest ones to do this with I think. You got nothing to lose for giving it a try. :)

I don't want to bring the Thimble thread back up, but want to thank everyone for the help. I sold all the thimbles I put on ebay except 1. Sold 22 thimbles......... :-) My mad flower and yard money.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yay! Hope you get lots of nice plants!!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, folks. I visualize a garden room where once one daughter jumped on a trampoline - which killed all the grass, needless to say. Hmm... do I feel ANOTHER article coming on?

NEMESIA DANISH FLAG * RED/WHITE BICOLOR
SNAPDRAGON SNAPPY NIGHT & DAY

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

oooh Pixie do you have a link to those delicious sounding seeds?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Another echinacea I have not heard of how wonderful. Green jewel, sounds nice where you get it and definitely don't forget pics when it blooms. Already starting list for next year, so sick!

I have only seen one black eyed susan that produces totally orange flowers. I will see if I can get some of the pure orange seeds this year from a local grower.

This is close but not what I want.
