Let's be honest....what have you bought so far this winter?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Pixie that is a gorgeous pic of your dwarf delphinium. What color against the dark background. Oh my if that doesn't get people ordering I don't know what will. Good thing I already ordered more cause that could start more online ordering madness. LOL

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Celeste, you had me fooled - I thought they were dwarf blue delph's! How many plants make up a patch that size (approx.)?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Wow - i love those near black irises.
really, my question was just - do all the irises smell like grape candy? i've not been too interested in irises - the flowers seem to last such a short time, but the foliage stays in the way forever. But now that i know that that scent really is coming from irises, i totally want some for that reason...

edited to say: Thanks for the offer, Celeste - you are so generous!

Sue, do you mean the Speedwell? I bought a small 4" pot about 4 yrs. ago.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL - come to the spring round up - I'm sure they;ll be some to share!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I'm so there! Is there a date yet?

xx, Carrie

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow! After reading this I don't feel so bad about how much I've bought. Granted I'm trying to squeeze a lot of plants into about a 50x30 yard space. There's another 40x10ft of front yard space but that is inviolate so my friend/landlord Harold has something to mow. LOL

So what have I bought?

Order 1 - Van Bourgandien (I know, I ordered weeks before I found this site. I'm just crossing my fingers and praying.)

10 Gladiolas Nanus Elvira
10 Gladiolas Friendship
10 Gladiolas Mary Housley

Order 6 is in progress. I made the mistake of visiting the Dahlia forum to find out what a full Dahlia plant looks like, not just single shots of a flower, and found a link to Swan Island Dahlias site. sigh. So pretty. Must have.

Now, assuming everything actually shows up, I just have to figure out how I'm going to arrange it all. Sheepish grin

Wow. I am speechless.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I guess "glad lover" is a good name for you! You'll be digging and digging up and replanting and digging up and replanting and ....

Old House Gardens is a good place - verrrry tempting. SO tempting that I don't go there anymore!

Welcome!!!

x, Carrie

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

You fit right in! Welcome!!!!!!!!!

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

LOL Yep. I discovered last year that I had previously unknown passion for them and it's all Costco's fault. I picked up a bag of, mmm, 70 bulbs I think of what they called Butterfly, very pretty pink and cream bloom. They grew and I was hooked. The catalogs this winter just cemented the love affair. Now I'm trying to decide if I want orderly clumps of color or if I'm just going to randomly mix based on size.

Oh yeah, lots of digging for me. But the way I look at it is I live in a rented house. When I finally have my own property I'll be able to easily bring all of my bulbs with me.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Gladlover!
I like them too, but you've taken that passion to a new level! I plant them in clumps of 3-5 in between other things - like iris. They'll bloom when the garden is kind of slowing down for fall. I have to go and look at what I've got in my stash and see if there is anything especially cool....

All the pics just blew me away--do all of you take pics of your indiv. flowers & save them somewhere? I have shots-- of the gardens as a whole, but very few indiv. plants----mostly of lilies. Can you put your pics directly onto the site? Mine end up in a folder & I don't know how to get them out! Who are the techies that can help me? Glad lover--they are wonderful,--but don't let the thrips get to them--I used pesticide in the soil, & still had thrips--ruined all the glads--I am planting a few this yr. to see if my soil is clean.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Welcome Gladlover! Wow, you're an addict for sure! Do all go in the ground or some in pots as well?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Robin,

Go somewhere, like say, a tab of your garden journal, or a post here, and hit browse. Then go thru your computer and find the pic you want to store here. Hit "open" and it will (eventually) appear on your journal. Then you can take it out and stick it places, or link people to your picture.

But, I'd rather see a flower in place in a garden than a beautiful close-up any day. So, don't be shy about posting those, please. In the summer we get threads about whole beds as well as individual flowers, true, friends?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

LIGlads - welcome to another Long Islander. You really do love glads, judging by your long list. You'll love the Aloha dahlia, too.

Alburtis, PA

those 'eyeliner' lilies caught my eye, too, pixie. i had already ordered a black/white lily pair from miller nurseries, and thought they would all look good together.
i just received my SWEET PEA seeds and wonder if any of you have tried starting them indoors, as opposed to direct-sowing. it seems like they take so long to get started, and just as they begin to flower, we get hot weather and they're shot. anyone willing to share advice? -longswamp, near reading, PA

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

Tamberlin - Believe it or not that list is what I decided on after two or three edits of the original lists. I was actually trying to budget myself. Didn't work as well as I'd hoped. Something else will probably get mixed in with them, some sort of annuals, but I won't decide that until the nearby nurseries start opening up again.

Victor - Both actually. The Achimenes, Zephyranthes, Tigridia Pavonia and Callas are all definitely going in pots. The Tiny Tot Glads will probably get potted also. Some for my front steps and I'm determined to have an ivy covered ladder with potted plants on it's steps even if I have to build it myself. I saw it ina magazine somewhere and I decided I had to have one.

Carrie - I agree. Individual pics are nice but I want to see the whole garden too. It's nice to see what other people have done plus it helps give me ideas.

Pirl - Oooo! That is pretty. It's going to look so lovely in my yard.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Glad. I should have specified - I really was curious about all the glads going in the ground vs. pots.

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

Victor - I'm really still in the planning stages and I admit my mental garden is usually twice the size of my actual garden. I'm going to attempt to actually map everything out this weekend with proper dimensions to if it will actually all fit. I suspect a portion of my glads will be going into pots in my right side yard. It's the eastern side with no shade so it gets heaps of sun but it's also where the old driveway extenstion is so it's mostly broken concrete. It needs to be prettied up.

Search forums sweet peas in thread title - I'm not sure which forum though!

I remember a thread about sweet peas.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Welcome Glalover... you fit right in! I had some glads last year... and I pulled the bulbs out... was I not supposed to do that??? I plan to plant then in front of the house this year... of course I have no idea the colors... I mixed all of them anyway!!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It all depends on how hardy they are, Kassia. Some do have to be dug but others don't.

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

If the stalks were over 30" last year then they probably should have been dug up. The Dwarf or Nanus varieties, up to 24" generally, are much more cold hardy and can be left in the ground. If they're the taller variety and you mulched heavily you might get lucky.

Edit: Ah, misread your post Kassia. Yep, you were supposed to pull them. As I said though, the smaller varieties can usually be left in but sometimes better safe than sorry if you're not sure what variety they are.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Pixie, you have just guaranteed that you will get catalogs from every seed and plant and -----------company in the world.

Jeanette

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Why??

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yeah, why??

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. I love the seed catalogs. I just made a comment that you seem to take offense at. Sorry.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Because she ordered so much, is what I think Jnette meant. If we didn't order stuff, think of the small businesses that would go under!

Glad lover, I had the "cold hardy" glads one year - they were spectacular. We planted them in the fall and they bloomed in the summer. Once. Only. I've got too much going on to be digging stuff up. I gave away all my dahlias!

xx, Carrie

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I did not see it as offensive at all - I just didn't understand it. Once you've ordered from one or two, you get them all. I rarely ever order seeds yet I get all the seed catalogs. They definitely share your name and address. I see no reason to be sorry, Jnette.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

And I am the happy recepient of those dahlias . . . now resting comfortably in the basement :-) Thanks Carrie

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Jnette, welcome and no offense taken here, I was just wondering if I did something wrong! LOL
I already am bomb-barded with seed and plant catalogs and im weak! (as you can tell by the list) I have been blessed with lots of land, big visions, and one scrawny old body. It never comes out like I plan but I enjoy doing it anyway.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I am soooooo envious of your list! Alas - a few more years of having to rely on seeds for me :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I did lots of indoor seed starts one year and would never do it again! Way too much work. For the price you can buy annual plants, it's just not worth it to me. I do understand the need of some to get started earlier with gardening though. It gets them doing something.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I had fun planting the seeds last year... but I agree with Victor - it's a lot of work...

well, I am not sure what is going to happen to the dahlias I have... if the ones Andy gave me (Bishop's children) continue to do ok, I will be happy... the others I don't have much hope... maybe it will be the end of dahlias for me... live and learn... too much work too...

the glads I had last year were not very tall, 3feet the most... only the ones Andy gave me are taller, but the others are smaller... but they were actually easy to dig out... well, until I decide what to do with the front of the house they will go there this year with some salvia, lavender, purple cone flowers, red reblooming day lilies I got from a friend, plus some siberian irises Zuzu gave me... so let's see what it will look like... tons of possibilities....

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Pixie,

I'm a little late here, but I just wanted to say the picture of the iris and veronica is stunning. You have a great eye for combos.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Polly, I had a vision of dark blue, light blue and white. I also put in some blue delphiniums in there and some blue/purple 'Superba' clustered bellflower but they bloom at a different time.
I ended up throwing in a geranium for some pink color, some Stella's for bright yellow and long bloom. Only because the veronica and Iris blooms are short lived. I have 'Soft Summer Nights' daylily in there, some yarrow and a few asiatic lilies too.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Sounds gorgeous. Maybe you could post more pictures at different times if you get a chance to take some this year.

I was looking back over Schreiners catalogue from last year, and they had a group of blue, and blue and white iris that looked lovely together.

I've had some luck with veronica, but yours is outstanding.

Thomaston, CT

Hi Rabbit--I did start sweetpeas once indoors--made the mistake of letting indiv. pots get too close to each other & even though I had sticks in the pots, they mingled, freely--devil of a time getting them untangled! Then when I planted them, they didn't want to climb on the strings I provided! Carrie--thanks for the tips--I actually managed to post 1 on the weather thread---now, do I need a scanner for my nondigital pics? Someone in my art class is going to teach us how to print our own notecards, so I guess I'll find out what I need.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We've had the same awful experience with starting Sweet Peas, too. They're miserable to try and untwine from each other - one of those never again experiences.
