Cute!
I met my DH when we were both teaching & studying at a univ. in Taiwan. I developed a bit of a crush on him, but was too shy (hah!) to talk to him ... my friends and I invited him to parties and other social events, but then when he'd show up I was always too chicken to talk to him. After several months of this, we finally hit it off as platonic (EEK!) friends.
One evening, after I'd been "over-served" at one of the local drinking holes, I let him know that I was attracted to him. He thanked me and said that he was flattered, but wasn't interested in a relationship at that time. Mortified, and wanting to run myself into a brick wall, I did what any tipsy 28 year old woman would do after utterly humiliating herself. I extended my hand to shake hands with him. Er, we shook hands. Then, we said goodbye and I turned and made the long Walk of Shame back to my apartment. I didn't sleep a wink that night because I kept replaying the scene in my head and kicking myself for being such a Dork. I vowed then that I would avoid him for the rest of my life. ... I. Shook. His. Hand. What was that all about???
Some weeks passed when he started coming around to see me and spend time together. That's when I knew that I "had" him. He missed me! Hooray! Not long after that, we became an item and traveled around Asia and the UK together, then eloped in a simple outdoor ceremony with a few friends as witnesses. We've been married 11 1/2 yrs.
To this day, whenever he wants to get a reaction out of me, he offers to shake my hand. It *still* mortifies me.
hahahahaha - what a great story! The early part totally sounds like something i'd do, particularly the replaying of an awkward scene over and over part.
i do enjoy reading about someone else swept away to far away places - though i'd say from a certain perspective Asia and the UK trump San Francisco and Las Vegas.
: )

San Francisco is one of my favorite cities!!! I've never been to Vegas though.
Great story, wrightie - glad you found Mr. Rightie!

Oh I love him and she loves me

; )
It's just his way of making friends... the hard way. ☺
There goes the I'll lay low theory, Oh well I'll take my lumps.................................Valentines Day is a day for the ladies, some lady got board many years ago and decided she wanted more effection, and candy and flowers, So we created a day in her honor, it is such a marketing ploy, the candy and flower companies love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Watch the replies fly now!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you read any of the stories? i am just wondering, because that isn't really what we've been talking about.
no comment
I only read two of the replies. Don't worry, I am messing with ya all, shaking things up as they say. I have been married 23 years, best days of my life, but in all honesty, don't belive in Valentines day. I also understand that the thread is about how we met a significant other.
So, do we get to hear your story, Steve?
; )
Met my wife in the Navy, we were both in, she chased me for a few months, then I gave in, She is a very lucky lady!
Wow, somehow I missed this thread. I guess I'll share my story, although it's rather mundane compared to some of the romantic tales above.
I was a freshman in college, and had just joined the radio station. I showed up one evening there to sit in on a friend's show, and as I walked down the short hallway of the station, this guy literally came running out of one of the studios to my right and ran into me. He was laughing, and had long curly hair (my downfall) and it was love at first sight.
I for one do believe in Kismet, in this instance. We found out later that evening (he was a friend of the friend, so we all sat in on the show together) that I not only knew his sister, but had gone on a trip out of state with her, and had actually been in his family's house, but he wasn't home at the time. If I hadn't met him there that evening, I would have met him soon at his sister's wedding. So it was fate.
27 years and counting (oh goodness, that makes me feel old! Wait, did I say I was a college freshman?! I meant I was in kindergarten!)
There's this old Chinese poem which takes place around the Chinese equivalent to Valentine's Day ... I learned this poem while living & studying in Taiwan. I cannot begin to do the poem justice here, but here's the general story:
A man goes to a huge outdoor festival. While there, he notices a beautiful woman and cannot take his eyes off of her. She disappears into the massive crowd of people. He searches for her for some time, but she is seemingly gone. He turns to leave and there she is.
That poem has always struck a chord with me. My husband (a Brit) and I (a Yank) both had to travel to the opposite side of the globe in order to find each other. I prefer to think of that "chance meeting" at Valentine's Day as I've never been much of a fan of the superficial / retail side of it.
A girlfriend of mine asked her father - a Chinese calligrapher - to pen that poem for me as a gift. I cherish that scroll and have it hanging in my living room as it always reminds me of how I met my Mr. Wright.
