I do have a rooted Dr Susses does that intrest you.
Brugs - do you grow them?
Flygirl would you like to have my very last Flamenco that is rooted for your Zepherine Drouhin thornless climber? If so, I will mark it a done deal. Are you coming to College Station or to Waxahatchie RU?
Charlene
Mitch, I already have Dr. Seuss that I recieved from flowerjunkie. I'll mark your Flamenco for Waxahatchie. I am not worried about one for one unless it just works out. I came away from FWRu with way more than I brought. I hadn't really planned on trading the Flamenco, but since the three of you seem to love it so, I don't mind it at all. It seems to be easy to start, so I'll just start some more of them.
I would prefer that you, Flygirl and Silverfluter get my nicely rooted plants. I am marking them for you all.
Charlene
Charlene - you are being way to sweet, LMK you brug list of wants I sometimes can get rooted ones that I might not want but wold love to pass on.
Thanks so much Charlene! I won't be coming to the RU, so I'll mail it to you, let me know when you're ready.
Thanks again,
Rox
Fly_girl if you aren't in too much of a hurry, I can bring it to you. You can meet me on an exit off of 45 near you.
I have a sister that lives off of 2920 that I plan on surprising early this spring with a front yard facelift. She has many illnesses from breast cancer to recurring antibiotic resistant staff and several other serious things as well.
She bought a house last fall and I want to make the yard pretty. She is an avid purple hatter so I will be doing red and purple in one area and a pink ribbon bed in another area. I am a little excited to be doing this, so forgive the TMI. LOL
I should be coming in early March if that is not too late.
Hey, I just had an idea! (lightbulb goes off!) I think I'll make a thread and see if anyone else wants to help with the yard. It could be a fun day and what a delight for my sis. First I have to pick a date. Duh!!
Charlene
Thanks Charlene, that would be fine if I can find the rose you want. I just called our Wally world and they don't have any roses yet. But if it's one that they usually have, I'll definitely grab one when they come in.
Silverfluter, I have marked one of the rooted Flamenco brugs for you. If you don't find the rose, don't worry, I just thought it might be nice for others to check out the Wallyworld in their area for me. I will bring the brug to CSRU for you.
Charlene
Thanks a bunch Charlene. Is there an antique rose I could root for you? Unfortunately the only shrubs I have are Granny Grimmits, Marie Pavie, and Erfurt. The rest are all climbers.
Charlene,
I stopped by my WallyWorld to try and find your roses but as luck would have it, they have started construction on the store and have closed down the garden center. I'm sorry, I tried!
Annie
I am looking at the ones around here - just in case they do have them. John Kennedy or Marilyn Monroe - will keep looking.
AnnieJo, it is possible to get named Brugs through e-Bay and feel confidant that you are getting what you purchased. A number of DGers sell through e-Bay. I have purchased from SeedSprout, countrygdn, katz_kuntry_kuttings, 7servant7. I have bought Brugs from other very reliable people, I just don't remember their e-Bay user name. ...senior moment. Depending on what survives, I will have some cuttings to trade or for postage. I won't be able to make any of the RUs this spring.
Betty - Thank you for adding the DGers names, I know when I said we had the only good people on ebay my mind went blank.
Yes, thank you for the names! I have ordered from Seed Sprout so I am soon to be a certified Brug addict! And as soon as some of you guys teach me, I will have some to share. I got the Miss Emily MacKenzie, Flamenco, Kurpark Bad Salzchlirf, and New Orleans Lady. Would these guys be best potted in the same type of soil that I use for my roses?
Annie
I have heard it said there is never a good soil for Brugs if you bring them in during winter - they need moist soil in the heat and dryish soil in the cool....
That being said Rose soil would be great I think for a basic soil.
I have been having soooo much fun reading this thread. Now I do not feel like an idiot trying to grow these in West Texas. I have a Texas Pink sent to me by gordon hawk in the fall of 06... rooted it and planted in a cut down clear 1 liter plastic bottle.. it was growing like a weed in the late winter. I had moved it outside to get a little sun when when had a suddend ice and snow storm.. brought in all my plants but missed that one. It was frozen solid with icicles hanging off its little leaves and I could see ice crystals around some of the roots in the soil... I was sure it was a gonner.. my 12" beautiful "growing" cutting.. and my first. Well, surprise... it lived and bloomed last fall! Only about 3 absolutely beautiful blooms too.. would have been larger and more but it had only graduated to a 3 gallon pot and wilted frequently during the summer and fall when I could not water 2 to 3 times a day... and I used polymer water crystals in the soil too! These things LOVE water! LOL Can't imagine that it would have survived without the water holding crystals.
... always looking for some colorful cuttings... NOID's are just fine with me. I will hopefully have some to share next year. Had a beautiful NOID white that grew well last year in the ground at my mothers.. the only one I put in the ground.. have several cuttings rooting now from it now but all are already spoken for...(the neighbors saw moms and all want cuttings this spring.!)
Tammie
Tammie, to help with the watering problem in the summer. Put your pot in a larger pot w/o holes in it and fill the bottom pot with water. If you have a mosquito problem, cover with netting around the pot or use mosquito dunk. They will not water log when you keep them sitting in a pot of water as long as the water level isn't too deep. Just keep the level of water no deeper than about one third the height of the pot the plant is in. If it empties too fast add more. If it doesn't empty within three days, add less. Problem solved.
You can solve the fertilizer problem by adding liquid fertilizer to the water. It will take up the fertilizer and water together.
Silverfluter, I like climbing roses, it is just that the Tropicanna was my first ever rose and I want a bush one like I had before way back when it was the ARS winner in the 60's. I will gladly trade with you for one of your other roses, the only thing I would like is for it to be a frequent bloomer. Climbing is fine on anything except my nostalgic Tropicanna.
Annie, sounds like you are off to a good start!
Lhasa, contact me next fall and I'll give you some cuttings from my NOID yellow and pink.
I can't believe your brug survived that cold! Some are more delicate than others, I had a beautiful unnamed variegated brug that didn't make it over last winter. It was close to the house so it benefited from a microclimate but it wasn't enough for it .
That is perfect - never thought of the double pot... great idea and I am going to love trying it!
Thanks for the search Anniejo. My sister just called and she has the Kennedy and Marlyn for me at Wallyworld for $4.95 each. I still need the one I one the most! Tropicanna (not the climber).
I am sure it will turn up somewhere.
I appreciate all the help.
Thanks Charlene
Tropicanna - you want to hear something sad? I freecycled a good sixed bush of that one last year.
I got a Maya from someone at the FWRU that didn't make it. I would love to get that one again.
I have a NOID Yellow rooted plant if anyone needs that one. I should have lots by next fall as I bought several this year that seem to be off to a good start.
Charlene
Charlene, I understand. I'll keep looking for the Tropicana shrub. All the roses I mentioned bloom more than just in the spring, but I don't think any of them bloom all the time. They might though if I took better care of them. I'm going to try some different things this year which should help, if I can just find the time and energy to do them.:) New Dawn is probably the most black spot resistant and it has bloomed in the summer if we get rain. The leaves are very small and grow on short stems. Flowers are also on short stems, but it seems that's true of most of my roses. Cecile probably blooms more than the others and it does smell good, and gets quite large pretty quick. It'll need a good strong support, but New Dawn will too.Buff Beauty is a small climber.
What's a Maya?
Mitch I am afraid to ask, but what is freecycled? Do I even want to know?
Maya is a varigated brug.
I know Sylvia has a Maya but no idea who else around here?
freecycle is a online place you say I have a rose bush and people come and dig it up for free...
Silverfluter, I would be pleased to have any of the roses you mentioned. The only ones I really don't want any more of are the onetimers. They are pretty for about 10-14 days and then it is over.
Charlene
Mitch, I sure hope the digger of that beauty loves it as I will love mine when I finally get it. I have seen it online, but they want too much for it plus add shipping to that and I always just sigh and pass!
I have one rose left here... had 40 some at the end of summer - that is another story... anyway this is a noid pink stunning and HUGE that is why I have never moved it... but I can take cuttings - this thing is in bright shade and blooms nonstop from Spring to late Fall with stunning pink blooms.
I know - I asked around here a few people but I could not find anyone that really wanted them... a group of men came and took them for the looks of things I am guessing they sold them off. It was very sad... a sad day.
Charlene, yes I know what you mean about the spring bloomers. It's a lot of space to waste on something that's only going to bloom in spring. My first requirement when picking out roses was that they be repeat bloomers. I'll take some cuttings tomorrow.
Silverfluter thanks bunches. I can hardly wait.
Mitch please do take some cuttings and get'em started for me. I just can't seem to root a rose. I am going to Melva's in Feb. She is going to teach her rose propagating class again. I had to leave before the lesson in October.
Charlene
Charlene will you come by this way on your way there? You could take the cuttings with you can have the master rose rooter help you get them done right. I can try here - I have a 50 50 rose cutting rate.
Mitch, never, ever give to strangers. I will always do my very best to take care of your babies. They still belong to you. I am just baby sitting, remember. The crew is coming Friday to make more beds with the Specialty Soil. Best I can do.
The best plants I have belong to you. I am just taking care for a little while.
LouC
LouC - this back yard was filled side to side and ft. to back with nothing left in between. You, Josephine, TJ, and everyone else on here did not have room for everything here. Just saved my best stuff for my friends and gave the "other" filler stuff away...
Funny thing - you know what was the biggest draw? Queen Annas Lace - the guys who came out potted at least 50 of the things and several folks who came out did the same digging and caring for them like they ahd gold there.
Okay, I am truly terrified now. I was just scanning through the Brugs forum and got on the chat about the "recipe". I see some of you have been on that as well. What on earth?? Do I really have to mix all of that stuff up and spray my brugs with it? Clue me in, please.
Annie
Just as long as they realized the true treasure they have. I am definitely a blessed lady.
Have the roses in mild mixture of Super Thrive until the crew can get a new bed done with the Special Soil.
Hey, King of the HIll is on....later...
