I never realized how much calculation you guys need to do in regards to frost, and when you can start planning, planting, etc. Given how unpredictable the weather is, I have a whole new appreciation for what you all go through.
Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - SB Edition
My step-granmother used to say,
"Don't change your coat 'til May is out."
Since she was Scot, it came out as,
"Dinna change your coot 'til May is oot".
LOL!
Funny, Nancy!
I generally plant outside the Mother's Day unless it's too early. May 15th works for this area.
Scottish accents are my all-time favorite!
Funny Nancy!! My Grandmother was very french and certain words had extra syllables. Lob-er-ster was the best one.
Funny Nancy! My friend's mom was Scot too so I remember her accent well.
My neighbor (may she RIP) used to twist words around.
She would call Virginia, "Virginger".
For Easter she'd get a spirial cut ham - only it was a "Spiree Ham" (pronounced "spy-ree").
If you've ever seen the movie, "Madea's Family Reunion", Madea, talking about algebra says she never understood that "Al Jarreau".
Nancy
Funny!
After Easter is when to put the garden out in Alabama.
Of course, I winter garden under Remay so my spinach and lettuce is going in now.

One of my friends is Mexican, and his mom has a hard time with English, sometimes.
There is a chain of video rental stores here called BlockBuster Video and a chain of restaurtants called Black Angus.
She called me one day and said, "Oh hello...I want to know if you and Gilmar want to come to my house on Saturday...we could go to Black Agnes for dinner and then rent a movie from BuckBloster".
Sounds like a great Mom.
We have Blockbuster here too - my DH sometimes calls them Busterblock.
I think first and last frost dates are changing due to global climate change. I try not to push it with really tender stuff, but I usually didn't get around to it anyway, lol. And winter sowed stuff is extra-tough. There's an article coming up on how to tell when to do what by what's going on, I forget exactly when but like plant corn when the oak leaves are as big as a squirrel's ear (?). x, C
JD - and just who is Miss Gilmar?
Pirl: Gilmar is a Mr. ,not a Miss. His real name is Gilbert Mario, but they've always called him Gilmar. He's one of our plumbers.
Rats! I thought it was a she, not a he.
I wish we could plant out at Easter! I knew a lady once who got so frustrated, that she bought up a whole bunch of "silk" geraniums and stuck them in the ground for a nice border!
Anyone know how the date for Easter is chosen??
I'll answer before anyone googles it. It's the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring.
Sue - a woman at the end of our block has plastic daffodils for April and May then switches over to the plastic geraniums for the rest of the year. From a distance it doesn't look bad at all.
That sounds like a pagan way to determine a holiday . . . like the summer solstice, winter solstice.
No doubt that's where it came from. Many Christian holidays and traditions were chosen to 'compete' with pagan ones, including Dec 25th for Christmas.
I thought it was more difficult than that. I remember reading about it last year, and my brain almost hemorrhaged!
Do you mean there was war involved?
My post was in response to Victor's 1:04 p.m. one!
Me too.
What do you mean by war, Gloria?
confrontation between the Pagans and the Christians.
Aren't most Christian holidays based on Pagan holidays..or a lot of them anyway?
Yes, Sharon. I was referring to that above. It was a way to co-opt their celebrations.
'Like' the society that plays together stays together?
Yep, and by doing that it prevented some wars, yes?
"Societies that play ..... ."
I remember once in a Primitive Religion class my assignment was to study the relationship between the native Siberians and the Russians who had sent in missionaries to set the native's straight. What they actually did was map the Christian characters onto their own panthion all the while making the Russians believe they had converted.
So the bear who was the main figure in their animistic religion simply absorbed the christian character of Jesus Christ so that he became the man-bear hunting and trapping and making game more plentiful just like the orginal animisitic figure did.
Ooops not supposed to discuss religion.
The Siberians knew that a branch that bended was less likely to break.
Very nice WaterCan.
Exactly, so did a lot of the others, hence similarities and melding of rituals.
I'm worried about Victor at the moment...he's asking himself questions, and then answering them!
I noticed that JD, but thought I would let it ride for the moment
It gets really bad when he starts yelling at himself!!
Momma always said it was OK to talk to yourself, but when you started answering you crossed that line. Looks like Victor has gone loco, but we knew it was going to happen sooner or later. You can't keep someone cooped up in a cell for very long with out that happening. So sad......
I've gone days not talking to myself.
