It was and we did it once a week. To us it was like getting ice cream or something special. We would get in a line for our turn and we would slide all over the place and lots of time we slid across the room without the towel, when she would whip us around.
WANTED: (Young) volunteer(s)
The Russians had a better idea.
We visited the USSR over forty years ago, when it was first opened up to US tourists. Some of the museums had beautiful, highly polished, wooden floors. Just as in some places in the Eastern world where we had to leave our shoes at the gates; we were forced to put cloth booties over our shoes.
My DDW figured it out. The men were given booties with polish, and the ladies got plain buffers.
The floors were gorgeous -- as were the treasures on display.
: )
LOL!
I'm really going to ask my mom about this. I have no memory of doing so, but it sounds like so much fun I'm starting to imagine I did it!
We had a radio that we listened to, and every week we had to take it to the shop for a battery recharge, Saturday night my brothers and I sat listenening to "Appointment with Fear" read by 'The Man In Black', they used to turn the lights out, we would listen in the glow of the fire - they would scare the living daylights out of me. This was during WW2 in London with the bombs going off all around - now they were not so scary as the radio!
We didn't get to see London until late-spring of 1944. Then it wasn't the normal bombing, but the times of the buzz-bombs. The V-1 and V-2 rocket bombs.
You would hear something putt-putting in the sky -- and then silence, as the rocket descended. They were used strictly to break down the morale -- but, as the Britsh said, "There'll always be an England ......etcetera." And between Bovril and Guinness, it didn't keep us out of visiting it on our passes.
After all, London did have the Windmill Theatre!
As far as BBC radio -- we never did listen to it. It was a question of understanding what they were saying. Two nations -- separated by a common language. We were Bostonians, so we had a chance, but I would still like if they had sub-titles on some of the British movies. We just saw Death at a Funeral -- and would love to be able to understand some of the punch lines.
: )
LOL. One of the reasons DH and I got on so well when we met was that I understood the lingo. Comes from being a voracious reader of British history and mysteries, and watching PBS TV. Once you've mastered some of the accents on All Creatures Great and Small, it's like falling off a log. Kept him on his toes, too, since he couldn't use those clever little expressions to charm me. When we vacationed in Ireland, I ended up translating for him a couple of times.
Seemama - we did the same thing when we listened to Inner Sanctum on the radio. Scared me to bits.
You people are just way too cool with all this history. All of you should have written the history books, it would have been more interesting and we would have learned a heck of a lot more from you all.
Thanks. I guess it's human nature, after all.
History sounds better when it is recited by someone who thought of the past as "The Good Old Days."
: )
I love history, so any you wasnt to share is just dandy with me.
Me too. Try researching your family tree - it's amazing what you learn when looking at how your own kin lived.
I have been. It is fantastic. I have one line back to thee twelve hundreds and the other are back to the seventeen hundreds. Lots of naughty boys back then too.
If there are any seeds left I would love to try some....James

Hiya Brad and Clare!
My Teresa Wilder was on the verge of blooming late last summer, but then it got a bit chilly. I'm just tickled and on the edge of my seat awaiting her first blooms this year.
I will post pics, Brad. Thank you SOOOOO much!
Good luck

Here we go again. Remember the old Cracker Jack box -- where you didn't know what prize was inside -- here's another chance.
I spotted this Plumeria Tree in my neighborhood -- and it was loaded with ripe and ripening seed pods. I don't remember seeing it when it was in bloom -- so I can't identify the blossom.
Unfortunately, the owner is a foreigner, and not in residence. I tried writing him and asking for the right to pick the pods -- and some info about the color, etcetera, The mail was returned -- with no forwarding address.
Not wanting the seeds to go to waste, I gathered some. I have a bunch of them, So here we are again -- I need a few DG'ers who are interested in being volunteers to distribute them further.

Brad, I will be glad to take this responsibility on again if no one else volunteers.
Brad if you'd like me to help disperse them out this way, I'd be happy to help as well. Just let me know what you'd like me to do.

Amazingly generous of you, Brad - as soon as I receive the seeds, I will package them and offer them on DG - thanks again!
I want to tell everyone who might be interested in the Plumeria seeds:
1. I will offer these to interested people in the United States only - I don't want to deal with any certificates, etc.
2. I am not ready to send these seeds to anyone yet - I will post here when I am. Thanks!
Thank you Brad for sending the seeds. I will post thread as soon as I get them.
