BoY O Boy, I wish i could have known. I would have shared. I did not take any pics.of my plumerias with my new camera this summer, W-H-Y ????????? Have some real good ones from old film camera. This is first time bloom from my " J.L. HURRICANE " from a broken off branch. Jerry
Newbie - Growing Plumeria in Cold Areas?
Now you are forewarned, Jerry. If you cut them back, don't tell anybody! lol
LOL the plumeria forgive you jerry. haha!
Meridith, I wouldn't waste your money from a nursery that may sell a few tropicals. I would go to Florida Colors who had great prices and great stock. Grafted is a better idea for your area too. I wouln't get any too exocit either with your cold weather. Start with iron strong ones!
Texasbigleaf, what is the last photo up put up and were did you get it. Sure has nice leaves!
Mickey
I love the leaves on that one also! I have never seen a variegated one in bloom. Do they have insignificant flowers like many plant that are bred for foliage? I would love to see a blooming one.
Who cares about the blooms, I just love the leaves! Is it a Thai import?
Mickey
Mickey - I thought about it a little and I am concerned they might not offer a type I want. Plus they might not have good quality - like you said. I decided that if they are inexpensive enough I will try one out. Most likely, it will be overpriced, but at least a trip to the greenhouse will help with the winter blues. I will still order from Floridacolors in spring. Can I ask, which you consider are iron strong?
Meredith,
Dutch Lady is right. Luc and Carol are great.
Mickey
Thank you - I feel confident about ordering from there, with everyone's high opinion of them.
you can't go wrong with luc and carol. meredith you have to visit luc and carol if you make it to naples. i visited them summer '06. i had a blast driving the golf court through their plumeria groves. too bad i didn't remember that hetty lived in naples. i past very close. next time hetty. LOL
Just started reading this thread and almost had a heart attack when I read the composted part. I know im late!
Davie Hi Jerry and welcome to the crazy world of Plumeria people!
MickeyAz, Yes it is a THI import from E-BAY and lots of $. Jerry
hetty - i might be selling some of the kids to help pay for my sanibel trip this summer. that would include a drive to naples and florida colors. actually, it could be dangerous making those two visits because you all are known plumie pushers. LOL
Just arrived home from Maui yesterday evening. Plumeria heaven. Very surprised to see knarled trees with no leaves just covered in blooms. They grow very big. You might try "Tropicalgardensofmaui.com". We purchased some starts of various plants from them and they packed them "certified" so we were able to bring them home with us. Maybe ordering more in the near future.
I have a plumie "stick" I have been petting for 2 years. Had no idea what they could actually become. OMG. Since Maui is all lava, I intend to buy lava sand to add to almost everything. It must be magic.
LouC
the eternally watered plumeria. LOL
wow! i knew they got into trees, but never even thought they'd get that FAT! the ones i've seen in the Keys when i went there were all anorexic looking compared to that one!
Jen has two Singapore plumies. Not quite that big yet, but very large. Never loose their leaves. They were blooming all over the top too. A lot of the others were naked but blooming like crazy. She had to keep reminding me that it is winter. Her winter is better than my best spring. And, of course, they require no special handling whatever.
Dete, I'm not sure if those planters are getting water from the surrounding area or not. I know it looks they are, but I don't think they would survive sitting in water 24/7. I'm thinking that the planter is enclosed and sitting in the water.
Diehard, most of the older trees in the Keyes are long gone from Hurricanes. What's left is probably some more recent plantings so it is understandable that they would look thinner. Some also may be not cared for properly.
Lou, my Singapores don't lose their leaves here either. If it gets cold enough, even evergreen plumerias will drop their leaves. The downside to Singapores is the Black Tip which is almost inevitable every year, but the fragrance makes it worthwhile.
By the way, anyone can bring home cuttings from Hawaii. You just have to clean them well with soap and water, remove all the leaves, and have them inspected at the Ag station at the airport. If you bring a box with masking tape to the Ag station, the inspectors will seal them up for the airplane ride. I know people who have brought home suitcases full after having them inspected at the airport.
oh... i forgot about the huricanes! how could i???
I recieved my plumeria from Florida colors today! I ended up getting a dwarf deciduous.
I also got one from a local nursery that has a bunch of buds. Thing is I don't know what kind it is. I asked the guy working there and he said it's the pale yellow kind lol. I was happy to find any, I couldn't believe they had them at all!
