Oh deer.
Plant collector or garden designer? - Part 2
Most likely.
Just a suggestion for those who have self-doubt of their design
skills. I am a middle-aged landscape design student at North Shore Community College in Beverly, Ma. I am in it because of
an occupational injury that required vocational rehab, but a lot of the other students are just homeowners who want to learn the
conventional methods of landscape design. It's cheap, easy, and
as long as you show up for all the classes and make a serious
effort you get a lot from it. You can take as many classes as you feel you need and some of the instructors are very knowledgeable. We go on field trips to Mt. Auburn Cemetary,
Arnold Arboretum, etc., as well as working in a botanical display garden, Sedgewick Gardens at Long Hill, also in Beverly, Ma.
It's worth looking into your local community college for possible
courses in landscape design. You may need to go outside your own state as I have had to, but the experience can be rewarding
Great idea drzzsheehan!!
Oh Patti!! I had poison ivy last year on one arm. I think the wild grapes I cut out of a tree was ivy. I had to wrap my whole arm, wrist to muscle, in guaze and tape it, it ran so bad. I had it for two weeks before it slowly dried up. I coated it with zinc oxide and later bought Calagel clear. Both helped with the itch.
I wouldn't have gotten it if I hadn't planted 6 volunteer hibiscus across the road instead of tearing them out. They better be pretty!!!
I've always debated about planting serviceberry. I always read good reviews on it, but don't have room. What a lovely area!!! I like the shape of the tree.
Drzzsheehan, that is a good idea!
Over to the left and across the road is where I planted the hibiscus. Innocent looking isn't it. It was a good year for my iris too.
billyporter, Very nice iris bed and other goodies. Yes the pain we endure to garden. And it is even even easier to accept when doing a rescue.
Victor suggested a product called, Tecnu. I have tried most, but not that one. I am sending DH off to get some today. To late for this go, but I will use it for the next as there is always a next with PI.
I am better, but during the night the part on my chest and waist drive me mad. My legs are less sensitive to it, because I just scratch them until that hurts worse than the itch. Big thing is to get rid of the resin which is what spreads it. I didn't this time and I am paying the price. I wore the same clothes to garden in the next day which must have been covered in resin. Dumb me. Stinky too. Patti
Careful with your gardening shoes. People often forget they've walked through it and the evil PI remains on the shoes so you'd reinfect yourself by just putting them on again.
Shoes, gloves, tools, etc. The oil can last years! Patti, maybe you need a Medrol pack (Prednisone relative).
I am avoiding the doctor on this one. My poor system is over medicated in general. I did do a major cleaning of everything since, except the tools. Plastic garden shoes are great for being able to be washed. I put them in a solution of water and bleach. Figure that kills it, but maybe not? But I will be back out the next nice warm day and will be more vigilant about any vines that I am pulling and keeping an eye out for ticks. They actually are too small to see, but I do a big check when I come in and shower. They are my other main nemesis. Thanks for your concerns and advice. Patti
Patti, have you tried the histamine 1 and 2 blockers, like I said they told me daughter to take.
Victor seems to know more about these, but apparently benadryl and tagamet qualify. Taken together.
Now that I've placed my first plant order, I'm already asking myself, 'Where is that going to go?!'
Me - I never have any idea what I am doing LOL I just like to play around and move things around....I buy plants that I like and just put them where I think I will like them. It is all in fun though - I enjoy it.
My mom calls me the Britney Spears of gardening!!! LOL I am just crazy!!
Not sure I'd want that nickname!
NO KIDDING!!!
EEK! What does that mean?
that you propagate indiscriminately, but then neglect the poor little plantlets?
(kidding - i'm sure you are a much better plant mom than Britney.)
Hahahaha too funny but that was cute!!!
Victor, isn't that what gardening is all about? I've sent 3 orders. Mostly seeds this time.I love to get discounted books from Pinetree and I ordered seed starting book from Parks Seed. I did buy the echinacea series from Pinetree. I know they will be tiny plants, but the price was right.
ROTFL over Britney.
I got 3 echinaceas. Hey, I think that's a collection :))
Yes it is!
:))
I've walked all over my yard trying to decide whare I would put iris if I divided them. Same with the daylilies. I would love to have a longer phlox bed and if I get a few more oriental lilies where do they go?
Beds are just going to have to get bigger!!
Wish I had that option!
Seriously, you have no room to go bigger? I'm almost to that point. I have to leave access to the house. We realized that when we had to have a sewer pipe dug up. It was about a foot from the house, but they had to still go back another 10' to replace it. I also have to leave 100'' for DH to drive his classic car into the yard. I took a tape measure out and measured from wheel to wheel, added some to give him room and planned the Half Moon bed accordingly :))
