Yeah, isn't it funny how those others jump in the cart from the nursery too.
Visions of Spring '08! - Part 2
You mean my canes? Not New Dawn but the native rambler I described and posted the photo of. I just finally placed my Fairweather order. Was agonizing. Eliminating plants was like performing an exorcism, but less fun.
Victor where is that post of the native one? The one above looks like 'New Dawn', but I know very little about roses. Now I will have to hope that the clematis that I planted over the last two years look good with the kids if they survive. They have been kind of puny so far. Patti
Here is my list
1 Mermaid $8.95 to go through an oakleaf hydrangea
1 Veilchenblau $8.95 to go through a buddleia
1 Night Owl (PPAF) $9.95 to go through a inkberry
1 Pinata $8.95 $8.95 to go through a viburnum
1 Mutabilis $8.95 $8.95 to go through a through another oakleaf hydrangea
1 Altissimo $8.95 $8.95 up a fence
1 Alister Stella Gray $8.95 $8.95 to go through a forsythia
1 Celine Forestier $8.95 $8.95 to go through a lilac
1 Ebb Tide (PPAF) $9.95 $9.95 not a climber
1 Little Mermaid $8.95 miniature
1 Mrs. Oakley Fisher $8.95 not a climber
The pink one is the native.
That is a sweet one, no clue what it is? But I have done enough damage for the year with roses. I do have some coming from the coop, mostly rugosa. I am going to start another Rugosa bed with plants and roots that I can swipe from existing beds, but I may add a new one to the mix of the old pink and white ones called Moore's Striped Rugosa. Patti
Seems you have about seven years of work planned for this year, Patti!
Victor, No, I am on schedule. I like digging holes. I now follow Dave47 good advice and will rent a rototiller for enlarging the garden beds so that will go quickly. My biggest thing one the list is to fix the deer fence, but I am counting on DH to rent a post digger or a man to help, but I haven't told him about that yet.
The old veggie bed is going to be my next good couple of days worth of work, but it isn't even Feb yet. Here is that mess. Abandoned long ago. Trees growing up in the middle, but there is a ton or two of black gold in those raised beds that you can't see. I may need that same, not yet hired man, help or DH.
March is going to be a bust as I am going to help take care of a friend up in Me while she recovers from surgery. Not sure how long that will take, but I will hit the nurseries up there if there isn't 4 feet of snow still on the ground. I want to go to NOL to visit DS in late March for just a few days. My 92 year old mom wants me to go on a trip to South America in May. But that is Tulip time. Conundrum. Never enough time. Patti
Not a fan of tiller but in your case it's a labor saver. You have a full travel schedule to boot! Your mom is something else! Where in SA?
¿Hablas español? ¿Quieres practicar?
Not unless she takes DH who is fluent. I can read menus. I think Rio, but not sure as she is also thinking about some other places. I was in Brazil last in 1976. Could be fun, though I would rather go to Chile. She is going in March to The Greenbrier resort in WV were she went with her parents as a child and has always wanted to go back. I hope it is what she remembers. Patti
Patti--loved your garden pic--Victor--great combo of the 2 colored roses--am ashamed to post my pics. Patti--I planted a shrub rose 20 yrs ago--can't remember what of course, but think it's one of the Explorer series. Stayed at about 5 ft with a 6 or 7 ft spread--virtually thornless--silvery pink blooms by the hundreds & long season--at least 2 or 3 months--but last summer, began climbing an adjacent apple tree! So is it a rambler? I painted a watercolor of several blooms---bought a card reader & son will come Sat. & help me post some pics, My Mom is also 92--will be 93 on 2/11, but hates to travel. Where in ME are you going? My stepson came here for a week --ME was too depressing for him!
Hey! Maine is only depressing if you don't like snow activities. LOL
I'm depressed!
Robin, Too funny, yes I figure if I share one of the nightmare parts of my yard, I will be just embarrassed enough to have to make it go away. I can't wait to get that part cleaned up. Still not sure what I will do back there, but the old fencing and junk will get removed. Since I did an endless stream water feature on that side of the house this fall this area will become a visually part of that new feature. But no plans beyond cleaning it up at the moment. Here is the spot looking from the house. That old veggie garden mess is behind the pines. This photo was taken last April before I built the stream. It will be fun to see what I can do with this area.
Your rose sounds like it just got spunky and it is wonderful sounding. If it is an explorer series rose it sounds like it might be 'Martin Frobisher', which is on on my wanted list, but I wanted to see it before buying one. If it is, it isn't suppose to get to be a rambler or climber. M.F. is a rugosa type. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/81570/
Maybe that is what Victor has. I was thinking his might be 'old blush' but that is a wild guess.
My mom is a month and day younger than yours. Her birthday is March 12th. We are still taking about the trip. I may bail on her as that is hopefully going to be my major bulb eruption. Instead I could have her meet us in NOL at some point for a few days earlier this spring. After looking at my pictures, Feb or March is a better time. By April 1st, I should just stay home and watch the bulb show. She lives in OK so she could just pop over and meet us in New Orleans. Patti
Don't think so, Patti.
Victor, I love the mystery, but please post it in the Plant id forum or rose forum, so I can get one. I love the long flexible stems and the soft color of yours.
I have posted several things there and people are amazing at getting a correct id back so quickly. I only have one plant that I haven't got an id on. Though I have ton's of NOID's that I haven't asked about as they are mostly DL and iris so it isn't so important to me to have their names, as long as they grow. Here is my mystery plant. I still don't know what it is. I even tried that verbose nursery guy who you had an issue with about an order that I discovered about in reading the plant reviews in Garden watchdog. Love that feature, when you know a reviewer it is very helpful. I need to read about that nursery you keep raving about Fairweather. Patti

I'll post it in Roses.
Victor, You are fast, I am only half fast, mostly. Patti
Hee hee.
ok, here is my new thought. Astrid Lindgren from this list I did for a light pink with hips. I just started to look at this sort that has just those with pictures. Patti

No - pink is too deep and the foliage is different. Check out my ID thread on the rose forum. There is an additional photo showing the leaves. Thanks!
gee - Patti! i'm shocked at the turns this has taken...
You love Victor's long flexible stems (and soft color), which may have given him an old blush. Robin has a wonderfully spunky explorer. And you did (something with) Astrid with the light pink hips...
look out - this thread will be in trouble next!
; )
Amy, Oh no, I could post a mystery growth here we found last year and make everyone blush. Well, not Victor. He got his gal id, she is Celeste aka Celestial and whole bunch of others. Here is my found n. bits. Phallus impudicus Patti

hahaha...
(but seriously - they are taking down the naughty seeds thread... eek.)
Victor, what made your final cut from Fairweather?
I have a lot of ideas but not sure if I'll be doing them this year or next. I still have to get rid of a big pile of garden soil that I had delivered in the fall and never got to finish my shade garden, my daughter came down with a cold so she couldn't be outside with me, my hubby was working all kinds of crazy hours and then the pile froze.
So my top priority is finishing the shade garden. I need to order more ground cover and I'll be dividing my hosta to add to my new garden. I was looking for some inexpensive garden sculptures at the end of the season and couldn't find anything really cheap, I was really surprised.
One of the local nurseries I rely on for fall sales on everything from plants and ceramic pots to trellises had no sales at all. Even when I stopped by last week not a thing was on sale.
I went to our local garden, also and they had just boxed up all their garden decor instead of having a sale how wierd is that????
Ours didn't even put away any pots or garden decor. It's all out in the open yard. Guess I won't be buying much from them this year.
Weeze - a pitcher plant, a ($$) tree peony, that gold mulberry, a sweet fern, two doublefile viburnums, one deodar cedar and two cryptomerias. I was well-behaved.
Nice selections. I approve lol...I was eyeballing the cedars and cryptomeia also. I haven't heard from Tiny Treasures so I might just have to keep my purchases in state.
What do you mean you haven't heard from them ? I am definitely interested in that one you showed me.
Victor, sweet fern is one of my all time favorite plants. I have big masses of them in several places. The smell is so fresh. I love them year round. Here is one bed in the fall (Nov) with sweet fern, high bush blueberries, Inkberry, rug juniper and a mugo that is not, plus unraked leaves. So should I look at their list? How are their shipping charges? Tiny treasures? Patti
Yes, I love them too, Patti. They grow wild all over Harriman Park, where I hike. Was always tempted to dig one up! Fairweather is a great place. Weeze (venu) buys from them too. I have been buying for almost ten years now. Shipping is not cheap. 25% of the order, over $100. But you get big healthy plants packed very well. Never lost a shrub or tree I got from them. Only a few perennials.
Victor, I sent in an order via e-mail and have not received an acknowledgement from them yet. I was going to give them another week in case they're doing a mid winter break.
Patti, I live just close enough to Fairweather to drive there. Love their diverse selections and quality of plants. It is not a large nursery so if you see something you want, my advice would be to order early.
Can you call them?
I just went back to their site and they have a note up about changing their email address due to horrific amounts of spam. I hope they have my original order since I did not keep a record myself. If I peruse their site again I know I'll end up ordering more than the original. I dashed off a note to please look for it.
You can't order directly from the website?
I got the FW catalogue today. Which TP did you order Victor? I'm going to order Ye Guang Bei.
That's the one I was going to order, but changed to Zi Die Ying Feng. (Laughing while pronouncing these!)
