First was getting long. Please continue here. Came from:

Thanks Victor... I don't know about me making a Spring list. Afterall, I discovered I had some daffodils I did not get planted! *sigh* ~ Pat

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

My initial spring plans are to plant more shrubs and evergreen trees. ...still thinking about it. Secondly, I gotta figure out a better way to keep my neighbor's son from driving over my garden everytime he comes to plow the driveway. A huge pile of rocks and cinderblocks didn't stop him this year.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's a constant problem for me, Harper - both with my own plow guy who does my driveway (better since I put the reflectors up) and the town guys with the front.

Has anyone removed mature clumps of miscanthus?? I want to, and have heard it is no easy task.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Man, I can't keep up! Back to the Oakes conversation for a moment - I ordered from them last year and I got 2 free lillies. I was so impressed with them that I don't think I would order anywhere else. Has anyone ordered from Garden Crossings? They have some nice Heuchera that I want for the front yard too. They send in 5" containers and seem to be cheaper than the nurseries that sell in 3" or 4" containers. There were a few negative comments in watchdog, but overall, everyone seemed rather pleased with their shipments.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've ordered from GC many times Anita. They are top-notch! A bit pricey on some stuff but you get great plants that are very well packed.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Victor. I'll give them a shot.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

A new addiction for me seems to be dwarf conifers. Oh brother!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Anita, I give 2 thumbs up to Garden Crossing also. Really nice stuff and great packaging.
I'm going to binge on Iris this year. JI, TBI, and Siberian. I'm a bit impatient waiting for the Iris growers to get their catalogues up for the spring.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We may be getting a nice sized check from Uncle Sam and he wants us to spend it - wonder what we will do with it?!!!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Share it with your NE Forum friends?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I didn't mean me - I meant everybody! The rebate check they're talking about. 600-800 per individual. Double for couples.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

The recession stopper check? Yeah.....I'll spend it to reinvigorate the economy :~) I'll invest in green.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

In irises?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I just asked dh about that - he said it isn't official yet. Anyone know differently?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Or "Irishes"?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Correct. Nothing official yet.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

And there is a limit too, might not get any so I hear.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I haven't paid too much attention yet. I wait until it's a done deal.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

That would be irises. The irishes come free as clover for bunnies. Which live under the garden shed. Which my dogs were frantically trying to get to the other day. Bad dogs!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Oh - I thought the Irishes came with coffee!

We get tax money it will go toward paying our taxes.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's a novel use!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Pirl or Celeste - do you have DL 'Midnight Oil'? It's in Fairweather and looks real nice.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sorry Victor, don't own that one..looks like a nice dark one!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks - I might get it.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i have only bought 2 daylilies ever (sir modred fall 2006, and always afternoon fall 2007), in order to counteract all the happy returns the landlords put in, but thanks to Celeste and Thom, i have about 7 more..!
i do love my sir modred.

amethystsm, I like your DL sir modred too. Bold always makes me happy. I swore I wasn't adding any day lilies this year. Well I did today add a few but I justified it by the fact I am enlarging only slightly a bed that would be a perfect spot for some and then I found a couple of others and then he had a hosta that I have been wanting 'Orange Marmalade' and then there where a few bulbs for some planters. I sent the order to bleek at who always has a small tasty and very reasonable list.

More of the Vision Thing, Victor in 08.

I have been thinking about climbing roses or more like scrambling roses. I want some that would scramble, ramble through shrubs and trees, but not look stiff and upright. Clear as mud? Any ideas for me? I am more about the species , simple looking ones. Looking at that old one called Veilchenblau and 'Night Owl' and some white ones and a yellow. But mostly I need to know if any of you are growing roses this way. I have seen this often in books but would rather have your thoughts. So should I try to ramble some through Lilacs or viburnums? Or what? In this picture taken in early July, the big green shrub in the middle is a Viburnum carlesii which is very dull after it blooms for the rest of the summer. I have lots of big green blobs that are begging for help. I have planted some clematis, which are slowly starting to romp. Patti

Oh, Patti!

I looked at that photo just after I had glanced out the window at the snow-covered picnic table and walkway! What a beautiful sight your photo is to me!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - very pretty, Patti. I am letting a rose scramble around like that. I have no idea what it it - it was given to me. But it must be native because you can just cut it and root more. It gets one flush of many gorgeous pink blooms in early June. The foliage is glossy and never gets disease. But it grows like wild and I often have to cut it back to keep it somewhat tamed. I'll dig up a photo in a bit.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry, Victor, no 'Midnight Oil' here: I think I burned it.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks all, Victor, I would love to see a picture if you find it. This time of year I really pour over mine to see the screaming combinations holes, and bland areas. It keeps the juices flowing.

I think I need roses with canes that are very flexible, not like the ones on 'New Dawn' which I was trying to do this with. It just shoots up and eats anything that come near it with it's massive thorns and thick canes, but I do love it. I moved it last year to a less dangerous place and it sulked a bit, well a lot, but I think it will be off and being ferocious again this year.

I will go over to the rose forum to get some ideas. But I think this is another likely spot. This oak leaf Hydrangea could have a nice early yellow rose to contrast with the Buddleia alternifolia, plus behind it is a lilac that has finished by 6-11, the date of this picture and that is where I have moved the 'New Dawn' rose.

DH thought I was wanting to move the shrubs to put in roses. He was so relived when he got the concept, that he agreed! Another item on the Victor List, Plant 3 or 4 rambling roses. Patti

Here it is Patti. I love New Dawn too and have it growing up my arch arbor.

Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh, Harper! Stop looking in the mirror as you type!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh stop! Sheesh....

Hey, I'm listening to your favorite guy, Ralph Snodsmith. I get him on podcasts.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

He's a good guy.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Patti, you'll want to get a rambler rather than a climber if you want the long supple canes. I put in May Queen last spring and it's already 3/4 of the way up the shed. I suspect it will go over the roof this year. Very little bs also.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, my canes are very pliable. The new shoots grow about 8 feet or more in one season!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, are you talking about 'New Dawn' or yourself? I am about to send in my order to Chamblee's Rose Nursery. I will post my list when I get finished. Funny how a few others just jumped on the list. Patti
