Think Spring! Tea Party & Seed Swap on Sat., Feb. 23

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

is lemon curd cheesecake okay?

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/487127/ Here's the link for the banana bread recipe :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Cheesecake sounds decadent! :-)

Do you think it can be cut into pieces that can be picked up with fingers? I'm trying to avoid a need for silverware, just to simplify service without resorting to plasticware...

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

I would think so.. If you think it would be to messy I can bring something else...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

We'll deal! I can't resist cheesecake... I'll even break out forks if need be... LOL because I was insisting we go with finger foods at the fall swap also, just makes things easier I think... now I am thinking everybody probably thinks I don't own anything but chopsticks!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

LOl - for that cheesecake I hereby volunteer to do dishes! :-)

I can resist many things, just not cheesecake :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have a dishwasher... I've just found that finger foods are the easiest way to go at a party like this that's basically set up for hours of "grazing" rather than a set meal... you can run out of clean forks, but nobody ever forgets where they set down their fingers. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

I totally agree with you as far as finger-foods (Hors'deurs) go for food at a party. LOve it!

Will you at least provide a lot of paper napkins for our drippy/sticky fingers????

.....:0) Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Napkins!? What, you can't lick your fingers clean? Why do you think the Good Lord gave us tongues?

;-)

Yes, Ms. Gita, I believe I can manage to supply napkins. I also have a good stack of little white chinette plates left from our fall gathering... not quite "proper," but I think our probable head count is beyond my number of little china plates! And again, little paper plates make for easy "grazing." But you'll have to keep track of your tea cup or coffee mug for the afternoon... I draw the line at styrofoam cups!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

Oh--I ALWAYS lick my fingers--but then there are people who freak out if you double-dip a potato chip, leave alone reaching into the "communal pot" or plate for some food with fingers you just licked!!!! I sure hope all of us "digging-in-the-dirt" people are beyond that!

Are you saying you need more small plates? Maybe sooper-dooper napkins?

At the parties i go to, the hostess usually has provided sticky labels (from any office supply store) for people to put their name on and then put it on their glasses or cups. That way you do not lose them...you just wander forever trying to find the cup you put down somewhere, with your name on it.....A nice social "game".....called--"How to alienate your friends"... Like---"Excuse me! How dare you!!! Is that MY cup you are drinking out of????" Can't you read?????

Just a bit of humor, folks.......Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

No, I don't need more little plates, I'm just excusing my use of less-than-proper paper plates! And I think I've still got a stash of "pretty" napkins from Ikea. (I love their blue and white flowered ones -- they match my grandma's china!)

I'm giving some thought to the coffee cup ID issue, not to worry... :-)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

We are both coffee drinkers and can bring our own, unless you have a surplus of coffee mugs with Boston Terriers on them.......LOL

Damascus, MD(Zone 6b)

Hi

Have you got room for 1 more?

Patti

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Patti, welcome! There's *always* room for one more! I hope you'll jump right in and enjoy the silly chatter that's going on here and over in the swap thread... we have a lot of fun "visiting" before our gatherings, too! And contrary to the impression you might get, a lot of us haven't yet met in real life. We're just a friendly, informal sort of bunch. :-)

Cat, I have quite a collection of coffee mugs, with a variety of motifs (I used them for everything in grad school... hot drinks, cold drinks, soup... since they hung from nails on a bookshelf, they didn't take up storage space in my one kitchen cabinet). And Grandma's china set included a good number of coffee/tea cups and saucers. But if you have a "pet" mug and coffee will just not taste as good out of any other, then of course you may bring it.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Not a problem, DH drinks more coffee than I do. Normally I'm on ice water. Wild child that I am. I'm on so many meds I have dry mouth, this is a heck of a way to get your "health" 8 glasses a day. LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

That is a great idea, doccat5! Everyone bring your own coffee mugs!

I myself am not a coffee drinker..Some tea? maybe.....

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, really, everybody does *not* have to bring their own coffee mugs! Seriously, I must have 50 of them. Or more. Plus the ones in Grandma's china set.

There will be both tea *and* coffee!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL - awww come on Jill...make everyone BYOC...seriously...then you don't have to worry about washing yours up afterwards...LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Finger foods and paper plates... The only service items I'll have to run through the dishwasher are the cups! :-)

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Please don't trouble yourself to bring out the family china cups with the periwinkles, Mrs Bucket.
Signed, Elisabeth.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

that's booo kay ! and she will be singing show tunes ! LOLOL

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Is The Major invited? He'll keep her occupied!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... I hesitate to admit this, but the hand-painted flowers on Grandma's china are blue, yes. :-) Other than that, I swear I am almost nothing like Hyacinth... although I do have a predilection for show tunes...

OK, enough about the cups. If we get too chatty, newcomers may be unable to load this thread. :-)

Central, VA(Zone 7b)

Darn, I wish I could be there. Will someone take some pictures and post them?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Hey Critter,

If the offer is still open to come to the tea, I'd like to sign up. If it's not too late.

Thanks a bunch,
Juanita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

YAY- the more the merrier

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It's only too late the day after the party!

Welcome, Juanita! Hop on over to the "swap" thread, and let me know if there are any seeds I can set aside for you... :-)

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I'll be going to the British store the day before (rhymes) for afternoon tea and goodies for the party - anywho - anyone want me to pick up something for them? They have a really good selection from bangers to biscuits and locally made pork pies :)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Where the heck is Aldie? I'm going to have to take a road trip down there to stock up. We're getting low on supplies ...

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Hehe - I knew I'd hear from ya :-)

Aldie is on Route 50, waaaaaaaay past Chantilly - if you think you have gone to far - you haven't :)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh never mind, I just saw that it's near Middleburg. I smell a day in Middleburg coming up in the very near future. Thanks for posting, Becky.

I think I'd heard about this place about ten years ago, but then it fell off of my radar.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

We cross-posted. So who wants to meet for lunch at the Red Fox Inn one Friday? lol

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Me, me :) OR, eating at the dining room at the B. Pantry is another option :-)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh my gosh, YES, they have a dining room, right?!!! When do you want to meet?! lol

I'll have to think of horsie things to buy in Middleburg that day, so that I can "multi-task" while I'm out that way.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

We must discuss this at the party :-) Another good reason for us to get together :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I just added this to the menu post, but wanted to say it here also... I was looking over my sandwich plans and realized I was in trouble if any of my guests were Jewish or had food allergies.

Please let me know (Dmail is fine) if you have dietary restrictions, like dairy or nut allergies that I should be aware of. I'll make sure there's at least one thing you can eat, and I'll ask people to label goodies containing nuts, or whatever. I don't have a kosher kitchen, but I can manage to make a sandwich that doesn't involve ham, or meat + dairy, and I can put it on a paper plate... I know it can be awkward because you don't want to make a big deal out of what you can't eat, but I'd feel more awkward if I realized somebody came and couldn't eat a single thing because of a gluten intolerance.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Critter, can we get a nose count of expected guests closer to time. I want to make sure I have enough banana bread baked. Thanks

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Cat, there's a list at the top that I've been editing as we go along... right now, we're got around 25 people, give or take, and I'm hoping we could pick up a few more before the day as people figure out their schedules for this month. :-)

I know that banana bread will be spectacular, but with so many other goodies on the table, even just one loaf would be enough for everybody to get a taste... well, maybe 2 as I have a weakness for banana bread, LOL...

We've never yet run short on food at one of our regional gatherings... remember that there will be 10 (or more) people bringing treats, not just 1 or 2, so big quantities aren't necessary...

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Ok, critter. I too have a weakness for banana bread and it shows unfortunately. LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

BTW, those green bananas I mentioned a week ago (that DH brought home for me)... they're still green! I'm beginning to wonder if he brought me ripe bananas from one bin and green plantains from another.... LOL.
