Dave, there seems to be a glitch in the tag system that makes it allow anyone to view a thread that is tagged in the writers forum. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4412022 for example. I thought that forum was locked from view unless you were signed up as a writer, which I am not.
Also there are a lot of tags that are returning "Page not found" results even though the word or tag in the cloud is quite large which indicates multiple use.
glitch in tags
Hadn't noticed those problems Zany, but good eyes! Also- I wanted to add that I noticed a lot of misspelled words in the tags? like...abbrevations, but it appears whoever put it in there corrected it with another tag (abbreviations), is there a delete or correct funtion to the tag system? Of course it doesn't matter though...me being an editor again. :)
Thanks, I fixed that!
Dave! You're up late. I was also thinking, is there a way to make it so that when you click on the "folder" icon to start adding tags that you could also leave the page open to the thread in question? I find it hard to memorize all the topics I want to tag (with some of these random threads) without having to go back and forth, scrolling up and down. I know you can add more tags once you start, but it is kind of cumbersome to go back and forth. Like maybe the tagging part could always open a new window or just add a new box to the bottom of the thread? Am I making sense or should I go to sleep?
Hmm, you've got a good idea there but what you're asking for it pretty advanced. Doable but advanced. That kind of thing would have to go on my long-term "fun AJAX development" TODO, which means a 2009 or later finish date. :-)
dave
hehe Dave, my todo list can't be longer than what fits on my palm with a bald point pen, you're awesome!! Until then, will it work if I right click on the folder and click open in new window?
I'm afraid not. :( The folder icon is actually a "submit button" for a form that takes you to the tagging page. Browsers don't have the ability to open form submit buttons in a new tab/window. It's just a limitation of the browser, alas.
best,
dave
You're welcome, I figured the writers deserve their privacy if they are going to keep entertaining and informing us.
Indeed :-)
I just clicked on a tag that took me to the writers forum...I think yer glitch is back!!
We're being infiltrated! LOL
There might be another glitch. I got a dmail from someone asking what the name was for something I posted on the Photo forum, which was well down the page. I answered them, which I don't mind at all whether or not someone is a subscribing member. I looked afterwards and found they had recently signed up, but was not a subscriber.
The Photo forum is one only available to subscribers, and the picture wasn't in the first post, so how did this person see it? They had posted a link to the thread.
Well, I tried to tag a page following the directions, but it didn't work. To scroll through the list to tag is SO slow it would take eons of time (and I'm not on dialup) and it wouldn't allow me to type anything in. If this is how it is going to work, I definitely don't want it!
Linda, I found if you waited it took a long time for a list to come up, but if you started to type straight away an appropriate list showed much sooner. You don't see the flashing line to start typing, just type. I got into the habit of putting in just one, two or three letters to bring up the only word or shortest list of words, then clicking on the word puts it in quickly.
To place a new tag to what is already there you will need to type it in anyway, once the system stores it that will come up with a comma with a space after it, then type another word. I am on dial up and didn't find it too slow.
No, it wouldn't let me type anything in until a while after the list was there, then finally I got one word in, then it froze up again. I finally got two words in, but geez! I've got better things to do with my time if that's how slow it is.
I found if typing in a new tag which wasn't already there it took a little longer to come up, but I did several with the same tags so it didn't matter so much. I can see if you were doing a unique tag that might get a bit annoying.
It depends how important it is to you, perhaps you can go off to do something else while waitiing (if you have the time that is!) I didn't find it too slow even with a new tag, maybe a lot of people were using it at the time you tried.
