can you do this? colored box for dg name

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i don't even know how to ask this but i'll give it my best shot. let me start by saying that i really would like to see this esp. in large co-ops. it's time consuming to scroll down and down and down looking for my posts. is there a way that each subscriber could easily find his dg post in a long thread by having your dg name box show up as a different color? not that everyone would have a different color but just on your own computer all your posts would show up as green or red or whatever.

Interesting idea mamajack....I kinda think it would be nice to see your posts at a glance.

Barring that, I do a "Find" to search a thread for my name or other relevant words. Just press CTRL-F and then type in the word you want to search for on the page.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

how does that work? just say i am on a co-op thread and i want to see all my posts. are you saying that i press control and the letter "f"? if this is not right go real slow and don't miss one word on your instructions. and i will go to a co-op i am involved in and try what you said. i am assuming that i type in my dg name, right?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

ooooh! that is good but this is what happened. i saw where after you press control/f that that little box comes up and after i typed my name in i saw one post that highligted my name but when i tried to scroll down it wouldn't let me and if i clicked off the box then the name mamajack was no longer highlighted.

There's usually a "next" and "previous" button next to the box that comes up when you hit the Ctrl+F(ind) command and enter the word or phrase you're searching for.

Exactly what Terry said, mama. Should be able to continue to search through the text in the thread for the next occurence of your search (your name in this case). Also it may come up and say something like...."have reached the end of this page, do you wish to search from the beginning". This allows you to continue to search through the page again for the search text.

Did you know that you can go to My Info and find a link to all of your posts?

Go to the top of the page and click on "My Info" - go down and click on "View the posts you have made" and it will show you any posts you have made on the different threads.

And if you make a lot of posts, you can then narrow it down to only your posts in a particular forum. So if you choose only the posts in the coop forum, you'll end up with a list of each individual post you made, and the subject of the thread is also listed so you can make sure you're in the right one.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well that works but it would be easier if my posts on a particular thread showed up a different color to me. the suggestions made didn't work for me the way i would like. unless i am doing something wrong. sometimes on some threads that i tried the control/f thing didn't work quite right. the other thing would mean i would have to leave the thread i am on and go somewhere else. i appreciate all of your suggestions and i will use them but i still wonder if it would be possible to make each subscriber show up to themselves as a different easy to see at a glance color.

I occasionally take part in one very active thread that has about 25 people, all talking all day. There would be no to assign enough colors to make sense.

Uusually in your browser, under Edit, there is a feature that lets you search and find something on any page. Just type in your screen name and it will scroll you through all your posts on the page.

I think we were just tossing out other options for you in case what you're asking for is something that can't easily be done. I'm not sure how much control Dave has, right now the color that links show up is dependent on your browser--links that you've visited will show up a different color than links that don't, so I'm not sure how much work it would be for him to override the browser settings.

The other trick would be to go to any thread where you've posted and click on your username. Then your browser should cause your name to show up a different color than anyone else's (unless you've clicked on other people's usernames). Your name will eventually go back to the "unvisited link" color, how long that takes depends on your browser settings, but when you see it's gone back to the old color, just click on your name somewhere again.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

june...everyone would have the same color. it would just show up on their name on each person's computer.

ecrane, i am already over my head in this discussion. on some threads my name is a different color without me doing anything...mine is green while every other person's is blue. but it isn't that way on all threads. i will try the name click thing and see if that will work for me.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

If your name is already a different color, then that means at some time in the fairly recent past you clicked on your name (or maybe it also turns green if you go to your member page using the "my info" link, I'm not positive about that). Fairly recent past could be as long as a few weeks ago, depending on your browser settings the computer's "memory" that you visited that link will last for longer or shorter times. I'm not sure why it's not showing up on all threads though, it should show up everywhere.

Doesn't your name turn to green when you scroll past any posts you have made? Jo

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

At least in my browser it has nothing to do with scrolling, links that you've visited in the past (for however long the browser's memory is) show up green and links you haven't clicked on show up blue.

Crossville, TN

O...I C...I knew it was something like that...LOL Thanks! Jo

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

this morning i was able to use that control/f thing and it worked great.

on this thread all of your names are in blue. mine is in green without me doing anything. all names change to red when i place the mouse over them. but yesterday i was on a private chat thread and both my name and the other parties name was in green. so it looks like dave already has some kind of color thing going on but i don't understand the differentiations yet.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It's not something Dave is doing, it's the browser function that I explained above. Your name is a hyperlink, and hyperlinks that you've visited will show up a different color than ones you haven't. If someone else's name was showing up green as well, that means that you must have clicked on their name to view their member page at some point.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

o.k. i don't understand anything about browsers. i really don't even know what it is or where it is or how you set it. you don't have to explain it to me ecrane. that's the kind of thing that i do better if there is another human present.

but on the color thing, when i am on a thread with multiple users all names will be in blue...unless at some point i have clicked on that person's user name. then it's green. and all names turn red when your mouse scrolls over them. is that what you said?

mamajack,
A browser is an application program that provides a way to look at and interact with all the information on the World Wide Web. If you look at the top of your computer screen, you should see a blue bar that would most likely say Internet Exploror. That is Microsoft's browser and is the most commonly used browser. I use one by Mozilla Firefox. People on a Apple Mac computer most likely use their Safari browser.

You hang out here enough and ask questions, there is always someone to help with terms and how-to's. When I wonder about something, anything really, I go to Google search and type in their search bar what I am looking for. Even terms like 'browser'. You can type 'browser definition' and wha la, you get many links to chose from that will give you basic definitions.
