I've never had it before, but I understand that eventually it kills the tree. :(

What is the best allaround book on butterflies ( for Texas ) as in what to plant, for food and for raising caterpillars. Thanks. Jerry

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Jerry I like; Butterfly Gardening for the South, by Geyata Ajilvsgi.
It covers the plants and the butterflies with beautiful pictures too.

I planted two POB's in the fall and I can't wait to see them come to life in the spring.... in what I believe is going to be a beautiful bed ....... it is going to have Mexican Firebush, Pride of Barbados and Esperanza (yellow bells) in it ...... it should be pretty.

You bet James, however the POB will probably be tender in your zone, better keep then potted.

Thank you Truetropical. Very nice picture.

I was concerned about that too frostweed, however, I was talking with a girl at our local landscping nursery and they have one that dies back every year and comes back in the spring. She was saying that they plant a lot of them in Horseshoe Bay so I am waiting to see what happens. :o)

Maybe Josephine could do a little seminar about cats when we all gather in Waxahachie.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, that is a possibility, but I think that Deb or Sheila could probably do a better job.

jataylor, I had the same combination of plants that you mentioned above except that I had one more plant that made quite a big impact. Plumbago come in blue and white. They bloom from spring into the fall and they are always covered with butterflys. The Plumbagos didn't show up well in the picture.

Well Girl, you sure have a big beautiful garden.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

beautiful pics Josephine,

Rita, do you have another pic of the 3 together? and how does your POB do from year to year?

Red Oak, TX

James, sorry I can not find a picture of that particular flower bed. I looked yesterday before posting that last picture. I did not plant BOP in the same bed this year because it was too shady, they need a lot of sun. I would dig them up every fall and put them out again in the spring. The ones that I would leave out for trial usually die from the cold. I would have to dig all 3 including the plumbago, if I wanted to get a head start on blooms. My mexican firebush are in pots. I will transplant them in the ground this spring.

The year before last the butterflies took to the Frostweed flowers like crazy. I thought these clusters of BF's looked so amazing on the blooms! The larger ones are Queens and I think the others are snouts.

Placenciarita, Thanks. I would love to have any of your plants and seeds that you can spare. Did you get any more snow? My heaters are going full blast. Jerry

Dallas, TX

Placenciarita, You have D- mail. Jerry

Red Oak, TX

You are so welcome Jerry. It did not snow for too long, maybe 10-15 minutes.
I had all my heaters going too. I had to get up and check on them in the middle of the night. It's much too cold for this Caribbean gal.

Placencirita, My heater went out last nite, i checked on it a 1:30am brrrr. Lucky for me i did. What is name of your last pic. It is neat looking. Jerry

Red Oak, TX

Texasbigleaves, That is the same reason I keep checking on them.
The flower is a Clerodendrum bungei. It is very invasive.

Love the thread here for butterflies that jataylor sent along...although I am in the Carolinas I love to beckon butterflies to the yard - they seem very partial to my Azeleas, Liatris and Lantana and if the Hyacinth comes up at just the right time they love that too...

I like the below picture because I was able to get two butterflies at the same time...LOL

I know what you mean. The phone lines here made it extra slow, seemed an eternity sometimes to upload just one pic. We recently got satellite internet, so it's much better. Lovely pics, rednyr!

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

linda - did you go with direcway or wild blue? I used to be a trainer for both of them here at a service center in SC...It sure was fun going out to CO every month or two while Blue was putting up Anik (the satellite) CO was not at all what I expected..and I mean that pleasantly! :) beautiful area

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Great photos Rednyr ~ especially the one on Speedwell. Sounds like drugs for butterflies ~ LOL.

Tell me what the bloom is is the 2nd photo you posted please? pod
