Butterfly garden pictures.

Placenciarita, what is that pretty thing in picture #6?

Red Oak, TX

Texasbigleaves, thank you for showing us your only good butterfly picture. Remember to take your camera out gardening with you this year. I always have mine handy. It started with grandkids, now I can't stop. Here is another shot of my butterfly garden. A work in progress.

Didn't catch a shot of a butterfly but the small yellow fall (sulpher ?) butterflies loved these blooms...

pbtxlady, the flower in #6 is a purple datura. They come in yellow and white. I have seen the variegated leaf variety but could not afford to purchase it at the time. It was very pretty. The hummingbird moths are especially attracted to these plants in the evening.

This year the more tropical butterflies came back. This was a Zebra Longwing on White Mistflower. We also had some Julias flying around.

Beautiful Linda.

LindaTX8 ~ Very pretty and a most different terrain from east Texas. I love that you have "made it yours".

The Zebra is a beautiful butterfly and your photo is great. That is the first one I have seen. I got out the reference book to read about it.

What do you attribute more tropical butterflies to this past year?

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Maybe the large amount of rainfall in 2007, compared to drought the two years before that. It could be populations increased in south Texas because of a large growth in larval food. The Zebra Longwings showed up in summer, then started reproducing here. Mighty cute caterpillars when they get to their late instar phases!

Those are just adorable Linda, we had some Zebra longwings here but I never saw the cats.

beautiful pictures LindaTX8, The one with the Zebra longwing on the mistflower is priceless.
I am not educated on their names and habits, but I know that I enjoy them very much and plan to accomodate them with plants that they like.
Somewhere in the picture there is a butterfly..

What a delightful cat the Zebra longwing is. Thanks for sharing that photo too LindaTX8.

Jataylor ~ love your closeup photos too. I am afraid I have posted all I have. Not that I don't like them, just learning the varieties and how to attract them. This year, I was more observant about what seemed to attract them.

What blooms do y'all recommend?

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't exactly have a butterfly garden, but I do have lots of butterflies. Here's one I posted on the butterfly forum that people seemed to like.

I will post some of mine later when I have a little more time.

I have never seen those species of butterflys that were in the last two pictures. I feel a new obsession coming on. I need to get the right plants next year and practice sneaking up on them in order to get better pictures.
jatoylor's butterfly seems to be on a butterfly bush. I would like to know what plant pbtxlady has, to attract sutch a rare butterfly.
Believe me, there is a butterfly in there.

very cool Frostweed !! ........ I may ask you to be my mentor this summer on raising cats.......would that be ok ?

my wife bought me a sheet of touline (sp) and a 25 dollar gift certificate from Home Depot so that I can build me a cat cage.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

O.K. I will be glad to help you as much as I can.

Red Oak, TX

Thanks frostweed, I hope that you will be my mentor too.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Of course, but I think you are doing very well.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Placenciarita, I don't think that the butterfly is rare--it's just rare to get a picture of the top side, with all the blue. As for the plant, its host is almost exclusively.... mistletoe. Not something any of us want.

So, after taking that in the fall, I did a tree survey for mistletoe this month after all the leaves fell. Sure enough, one of my Texas ash trees has some. :( Now I have to figure out how to get up there and cut it out.

Red Oak, TX

pbtxlady, I would keep some mistletoe, on the off chance that I get to see those beauties.
