Count me in and DH and a friend. I am looking forward to this. I really enjoyed the Oct one. It was my first one, but it sure won't be my last one.

College Station Spring RU-Sat. March 15, 2008-HEADCOUNT
Ceejay - no, 'twasn't me....although I'd like to...last time I checked w/our
County Ext. - there's a wait list and only so many slots...I'll have to check again!
Hmmm... Somebody around here is signed up. Wish I could remember who it was!! Class starts Tuesday, and it is bursting at the seams. You'll need to come to the orientation in September to get signed up for next year. Unless you did this year - then you're automatically included next year if you want.
Sorry. Off topic.
Yes, we had a freeze last year at the end of March. I remember it well.
Ceejay - I asked about MG on another thread.. I remember your encouragement! It wouldn't fit the schedule I had, and there ended up being a lottery for spots as I recall. I decided on the MN program instead - cover lots of bases I'm interested in.
Yes, I remember that, book. But there is someone who made it into the class from DG and I want to look her up when I work up there next week. And I am brain dead. Again.
I'm so glad you're going to the RU. I hope nothing comes up to keep either of us away!! Didn't you go last fall? I couldn't make it that late in the season. It needs to be in October for me. March is plenty early, but it is good for me because of the Conference in April. And I can protect stuff if need be for a couple of weeks. Just will be a big rush to get plants up and into pots in time for the exchange.
Ok - thought you might have thought it was me. The fall RU was a small group - but that was a great thing! We all talked and got to know each other.
I've spent time today outside trying to decide what to bring to the RU! What fun. So far I've only been to the fall RU's and the possibilities are quite different in the spring in Texas, aren't they? This will be fun.
For sure - if anyone is reading this thread and can't decide whether to come or not - the answer is - come on! There's always more than enough to go around, and one person's "excess" can be someone else's "treasure!"
The extension office is offering Master Gardener classes here too. Unfortunately they're all during the day. I guess people who work can't be Master Gardners. sigh....Oh well maybe they'll be offered during the summer.
Anne
That's the way they are here, too, AuntAnne. Problem is - you need to volunteer and the offices are only open during the daytime. Agents all want to go home to families after a day's work too. And the classes are so work intensive, that we can only put on one a year (six weeks). Then we have to rest... Larger offices with more agents might be able to do more.
Well, like I said one of the perks (for now) is that I get June and July off. Maybe they'll offer something then.
I am new to this, posted a few times, but could someone please explains what a round-up is? And what do we bring to trade? What if we aren't proficient enough to have seeds, etc... to bring? Can we come just to meet everyone?
annie
Absolutely Annie. Come empty handed and we'll send you home with an arm-load.:) I don't do seeds, just cuttings and divisions etc. What sorts of things are you interested in?
I live in the middle of wood goat country so I am always on the look-out for deer resistant. And, of course, half of my yard is in the shade so that makes it even a little more of a challenge. I have a lot of natives but in the back yard where it is fenced, I have everything from a hosta garden that I fight with, a small rose garden, and I am trying to build up a good source of larval food for the butterflies so I have the obvious milkweeds, and some others that I can't remember now. I ordered a lot of seeds so I can try and have a lot of fragrant flowers and perennials for the hummers and butterflies. I am also engaged in a tomato war with my father. I plant in earth boxes and he plants in the ground and last year I actually won! I am trying a lot of the purple varieties this year and have ordered the seed and more earth boxes and it is game on!
Would love to meet you, AnnieJo! Just come!
Oh - I think I remember reading about that tomato war. Didn't he fertilize like crazy, so he had lots of leaves, but you had more fruit? Am I thinking of the same war?
This message was edited Jan 13, 2008 9:27 PM
That would be the same war! He isn't making the same mistake again so I had better have some better tricks up my sleeve this year!
I was in your neck of the woods this past week-end and went by Arbor Gate nursery in Tomball and came back with a Satsuma orange tree! One more thing to try and protect until my husband gets my greenhouse finished.
I will definitely make the roundup!
AnnieJo - so glad you'll be joining us! It's always fun to meet other DG'rs in Texas and no matter what you can bring (or not!) you'll go home with great new plants. I went to the fall RU promising myself I would not take anything home... but I did, and great stuff at that - especially for butterfly gardening! You'll be in the right place for that. I'll have some b-fly plants as will others, I'm sure.
Welcome AnnieJo, I look forward to meeting you too. It is changed for us in this area now but the butterflies will be active again in the spring on this forum http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bbb/all/ you need to bookmark it and join us there later.
OK....I called the park office and the pavilion is available for the 15th of March. Those who have volunteered to help with the reservation up front, please d-mail me and I will send me address to you. As soon as I receive the money I will go and reserve the pavilion for us.
Thanks! Kim
AuntAnne, if you have an economical car you could come to the MG class in Centerville. I am starting it this year. Sign up is on June 1st. They only take 14 so I plan on being first in line.
Charlene
I will definitely think about it. Thanks for the info.
Anne
AnnieJo, do you start tomatos from seed? Last year at the Natural Gardener I bought the most wonderful tomato call Matt's Wild Cherry tomato. I don't know if they'll have it this year or not, but they do have it in the Seeds of Change catalogue. I'm lousy at starting seeds. If you want to start some from seed for me, I'll see what I can come up with to trade. I know I'll have chives and brazilian rock rose. I also have antique roses I can take cuttings from, and brazilian plume and a 3 color hibiscus.
I'm planning on coming with my wife and 2 babes. Don't think I'll be doing any trades this time around, just coming to visit. I'll bring whatever dish or drinks are needed, just let me know.
Silverfluter: I would love to have some cuttings of the three color hibiscus if you don't mind.
Broncbuster: If you would bring bags of manure, I'd find whatever you need and bring it for you. We really liked the poop you brought to FW. LOL
Yeah, that is some good stuff, huh Charlene?
Maybe I'll go get a load right before we head down and everyone can bring their own bags/buckets/trash cans to get it in. I'll do the shoveling(~;
Last time I had to bag it up so that I had room for my plants and t-posts, but this year all I'm bringing is poop, maybe. The owner of the dairy said that they were selling the dairy and that there would be a retirement community built in it's place, but he wasn't sure when it would take place.. It's so sad to think something that you grew up with is going to be gone before long. If there's any gardens in that retirement community, they'll have great soil!
Bronc, what are you looking for that you haven't found? I will help you find it. I would like to bring something nice for you.
Charlene
Charlene, I'll put you down for the cuttings.:)
Charlene, I still haven't found that money tree I've been looking for. (~;
I was offered some black hollyhock and cleome seeds. Is anybody interested in these. This person has "tons" of each.
I haven't found one of those cars that will run on garbage like in Back to the Future! The price of gas (and higher prices for just about everything else that's caused by high gas prices) has blown the budget in households all over the world, I believe.
Kim, the check for the 150.00 deposit is in the mail.
Josephine.
Thanks so much Josephine and everyone who has offered to help. I am really looking forward to this roundup and meeting everyone!
Well Bronc, there is a money plant, but not a money tree that I know of. The money plant isn't spendable money either LOL.
If you do think of something please let me know as I really do appreciate the poop!
Charlene
TJ, I would love some poop too. Somehow I missed it at the fall swap.
I'll go get a load right before we head down and everyone can bring their own bags/buckets/trash cans to get it in. I'll do the shoveling(~;
Just read about the RU. I really am planning to come. Since my beds are just about to be one year old I am not sure what I will have to bring altho I should have some mum transplants. Also, I will be happy to bring food or anything else needed to make the day. I received so many wonderful plants last year that every time I go out and work in my beds I am reminded of all the generous people at the RU that shared and made my garden so beautiful in it's first year.
Thanks Kim for all your efforts.
Am sharing a pic of our new deck and new beds (Summer of 2007).
Geneva
Geneva - That is just beautiful. First year, eh? I'm impressed! You must love sitting on that deck!
Yes! that is great.
That's very inspiring. It looks like a wonderful spring morning.:)
Bronco dont you forget to bring me my cow chip tea or something.... you forgot me last time.:)
Thanks to you all for your kind and encouraging words. We really do enjoy the deck and garden. We watch the birds at the feeder and hear the water sounds from the vase fountain. We always seem to long for a place in our life to relax and enjoy nature and this is ours.
Just remembered that I can share some Plantation Rose Verbena, very hardy and blooms a lot, likes sun. Need to get some potted soon!!
Aaarrrrgggghhhh, I can't come!!! March 15 is our Montgomery County Master Gardener Spring Plant Sale!!!!!!
Rats, double rats, triple rats!!! I am bummed!
