There are some growing here Josephine - you might want to try them - bad soil and little water are the keys here for me.

Are they growing in the wild there? When I go see my son in Kerrville pass through the town of Bertram. The railroad tracks run along the side of the highway and normally there's several hundred of the standing cyrpess growing there. It's absolutely beautiful.

I kinda spread the seeds... learned fast summer watering kills them fast - poor thin soil and they bloomed the first year. So wild now... but I helped them get here.

Jameso, there's a nursery near Kerrville, Natives of Texas, that sometimes has native aristolochias (including swan flower), but they don't do mail order. Cool place....also dangerous for my budget to even set foot into that place. They have a guy there that likes butterflies and that's why I grow Spicebush. Never would have considered growing it, but he showed me those cute little caterpillars, even sent one home with me and my new plants. Clever, huh?

Natives of Texas...I do like that place. I've bought the aristolochias but I never could find the aristolochias erecta which is native to East Texas. I started buying the big red sage from them and now I think I have more than them. They've really fixed that place up. I think the owner buried his wife up there on the hill and they did a lot of work. They also have a lot of standing cypress blooming all over the place. I guess I don't have to tell you not to get into a conversation with Pablo. He likes to talk about plants but you better have several hours to spend because you can't get away from him. Have to ever been to Shoemakers or Shoemockeres in New Braunsfel? That's also a great place and very cheap. The only time I've been to Medina was several years ago and they used to have an apple festival there. The Hill country is such a pretty place and the road from Kerrville to natives of Texas is a very nice ride. Between East Texas, the Rio Grand Valley, the Hill Country and Big Bend, Texas is such a great place to live.

If you have another chance to go to the town of Medina (I'm in the county of Medina, not the town), go see Medina Garden Nursery...really nice native nursery! And the owner is a friend of that guy you were talking about at Natives of Texas. Yes, that's the same guy, he talks about butterflies also!

Oh, I forgot to mention Schumacher's near New Braunfels that Jameso asked about. I do go up there from time to time. Chip Schumacher established that nursery. They have had financial problems the past few years because he has Parkinson's Disease and can't carry the large share of nursery work that he used to do. I know they've had to use volunteers to even keep the nursery going at all. Although they don't propagate as many kinds of plants as they used to and the nursery doesn't look as neat as it once did, it's still a good nursery to visit. It's one place you can get plants that are raised organically, a rare thing now.

Also if you are partial to salvia's. Schtumachers probably has 25 to 30 different salvia's in the small pot. Some are as big as one foot high and usually sell for $1.50 to $2.50. Among some I got are the Costa Rico, Purple Palace, Sierra Madriens Mexican Lite(or Lime lite). The Costa rico gets over 6 feet tall. Two of the others get to at least five feet tall. All are good for hummingbirds and all make it though the east Texas winter.

It's really amazing how good those guys are when they start their spray painting. I know thier friends at home aren't going to believe what they paid to get the paintings done. That quality work in the US would be much higher.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I know and to think they use spray paint, plastic bags, cardboard...no paint brushes at all....they let you pick out the scene they put on there as they have a board with several on them to choose from...wish my folks would think to take a picture of the board so I could see the chooses LOL
oh and these are the ones I sent down to get painted come to find out they decided not to take any this year.

and only problem is I want to get more done LOL but I know you have to have a passport to get into Mexico now and will have to wait till next year when they come down again to send more down....they make great gifts.
They are leaving early Tuesday am to head back north

Well looks like today we are going over by kilgore to start to look at the citrus trees at dwarfcitrus. then I have no idea where to go for green houses ...have to keep track of time too since I have to be back to drive the bus by 2:15 too LOL
any suggestions to a few good places to take them??? ..already know chamblees LOL

Are you wanting to get a greenhouse?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I am. Do you have a reasonable source?

LouC

Hello LouC

I'm getting one from Mineola, Texas mainly because it's less than 45 minute drive from here. I'm not sure if they ship but I'll give your their telephone number and email. What they sell is the metal frame and greenhouse plastic. It gowa up atraight and is rounded at the top and if you want to you can put a window. I put my last one together but this time I'm hiring someone else. I'm getting a 10 ft by 16 ft. The charge is $550.00 BUT I'm haveing them to include plastic sheeting for my old greenhouse and two additonal pipes to span accross the top so that I can hang hanging basket types containers which I use to plant seed. I think they sprout faster if they're at the top of the greenhouse where the warm air rises. So I really can't tell what the price of my new one is. Their telephone number is 903-569-8541. Their emails are www.hoopbenders.net and www.lostcreek.net
I also get a gardening magazine that has a lot of greenhouses for sale and they ship but I'm sure they are more expensive.

I talked to the people in Mineola that I get my greenhouses from and they do ship.

Thank you for going to so much trouble, James. That is very thoughtful. We have a trip coming up and will have to wait till we get back and settled. I did look at the link and it appears to be something we could do ourselves. How big is yours?

C

Longview, TX

The one I just ordered was 10 ft by 16 ft. My other one is 10 ft by 10 ft. I'm not very good at doing stuff like that. I could take their kit and build three with the pieces and still have stuff left over.

Further update on plants I couldn't find but now have found and can scratch from my list of previous unfindables-pellitory(parietaria floridana-seedlings) false nettle(bohemeria clylindrica-seedlings) Plantain-major-seeds, and cudweed-(gnaphalium-seedlings), and wild licorace(glyeyrrhiza lepidota). I still plan on digging up cudweed in Austin. Slowly but surely.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Where did you find those plants James?

Longview, TX

At the Shady Oak Butterfly Farm in Florida. Their web site is www.butterfliesETC.com

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)
