A 10 pound bag of oranges. Tell him now that you're in Texas, things have to be bigger. Tell them next time you want 5-50 pound bags. You might try Thompson Groves. I paid $19.00 for a regular Marrs tree and Meyers lemon tree. They can tell you what the shipping will be. Maybe it won't be too much. The trees I got were about 2 to three tall and I had about 20 lemons on each tree the first year even though I was told they wouldn't produce the first year. If you can't find them in Tyler, let me know and I'll pick up what you need when I'm at Thompsons in February. I'm supposed to go there around the 18th for a week but my dermatologist wants to do something and might not let me travel. I do some work for Racquet & Jog and the Shogun restaruants in Tyler so I'm there occasionally. Are the vases ones you or your mother made?

Oh I have tried to get them to go back and get the trees there but they say no they wont' have room in the suv.....so when they get here we are going over to Kilgore to dwarfcitrus aka acron srpings and get one of each Marrs orange and Rio Red grapefruit.
the price for shipping from Thompsons would be the 27.00 then packaging cost of 3.00 plus shipping and they have to be quarantined to make sure they are up to standards to ship.

I thought a meyers lemon would be good too but better not push my luck with them LOL and an avocado tree too I love to make fresh guacamole and my daughter just likes to eat them...will have to look and see what all they carry and might se about getting something else IF you go down.
they didn't' have any avocados to buy when they were there but the guy took them out and showed them the trees and there was a couple that were on the ground that squirrels had taken a bite out of and he gave them to them and =told my mom and the gal with her what to do to root them so she is bringing that back to me LOL

the vases are just plain glass vases that you get flowers in or can buy at walmart she takes them down and when they go into Mexico there are "kids" as she calls them that sit there and paint them using spray paint, match books, plastic bags etc no brushes.
I believe she said you get a discount when you have more then a couple painted.

they will be here sunday eve til early tues am when they head back so drop me a note when you are gonna be over this way and we can meet up and I can show ya a vase or two. she took i think 4 down for me and 2 of them are gifts so I'll have one at least I can show ya

You know those avocado trees are really really tall but the "luling" avacodes are very good. Incidently, I see everyone using the initials LOL. and I have no ideal what that is. I've seen those guys painting everything under the sun down there and they are very good with those spray cans, but I've never seen them paint a vase. I'll let you know, and tell your parents to be careful on the road home. You know that your supposed to let the State know when they leave. Officials try to keep a count of how many northerners are in the State at any one time. That's a disadvantage Texas has--we have to watch the north and south borders. This spring when my seedlings are larger I'll get you some East Texas natives-a standing cypress and a coral bean. The standing cypress will knock your socks off.

James, Took me a long time to know what some of acronyms are. The come from the cell phone texters.

LOL laugh out loud
ROFLOL rolling on floor laughing out loud
OT off topic

I don't text and these are the only ones I know. It is usually used to give an idea of voice inflection which is hard to accomplish in black and white.

frostweed--what is the flower at the start of your thread? a rudbeckia?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Mexican Hat I think... a great wildflower.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes it is a Mexican Hat, Ratibida columnaris, There is a great variation of colors in these, which makes them very interesting, they are also perennial, and will bloom for about two month period in the spring and if you cut them back after blooming, they will bloom again in late summer and fall.
Here is a picture of an all yellow one.

The one on my first picture was an exceptionally large and gorgeous bloom.

I told you about my 100 cuttings of coral bean and I was hoping to get at least 50 out of them. It appears I won't get but about 35. Those 35 are all showing many new small leafs and stems. I know I would have gotten more had my wife watered them heavely daily when I was out of town because that seemed to work. Without that daily water most of them died, but I'll take the 35. It's possible for some of the browned stems to have a root system developing so I'm sticking with the other 75. I also had a small victory. I think I told you last year I was looking for some particular East Texas native plants and the native man in Belton told me I probably wouldn't be able to find the particular plants I was looking for. One was the aurelaria flava or oak leech. I spent hours looking but to no avail. Then accidently I've found a place with the seeds for sale yesterday. Also the calyptocarpus vialis and cudweed. A couple of people I've found recently know where I can dig up some in the Hill Country and Austin. Things are indeed going good. I've got about 5 more plants I'm having trouble finding but I figure I'll get there. All of these are butterfly hosts.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

James, which are the other plants you are looking for?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

You never know what people on here might have - let us know and we can all keep eyes out there for you.

Longview, TX

I would appreciate that. Others are Lesquerella gracilis (Cloth of Gold), Spring Cress (Cardamine rhomboidea), Stylosanthes biflora (Pencil flower), Ptilimnium nuttallii (mock bishop's weed), any of the plantains, Aristolochia erecta (swan flower), alyeyrrhiza lepiodota (wild licorace), nuttallanthus texanus (Texas toad flax), hammerwort (parietaria pensylvanica), parietaria floridana (pellitory) and amphicarpea bracteata (hog peanut). If I had been on the ball last year I could have bought the swan plant at the Lady Bird Johnson fall sale for 75 cents each but I was the only one available to keep my grandson so I had so pass on it. Any directions would be appreciated.

Yes, I will see what I can figure out, also you might be able to substitute some of those with easier to find plants.

Have you checked this out - http://www.nativeseednetwork.org/index I dont know about this place but they have a few of the seeds I think every so often, they dont always have them there but they do have them from time to time from the looks of it and they might know how to get seed.

Longview, TX

Mitch
I'll check them out.

Still looking for another lead...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

James, which butterflies are you trying to attract?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

have you checked here? http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/ They have a lot of hard to find seeds there too.. email them if they dont have it and they have helped me before find things.

Longview, TX

The butterflies I'm trying to attrach with these particular plants are the barred sulphur, pipevine swallowtail, red admiral, falcate orangetip, buckeye, silver spotted skipper, eastern black swallowtail. I do have some other plants that are host for these butterflies, but a book I have, "Wildflowers of Texas by Geyata Ajilvisgi, list these plants as Northeast Texas plants which is why I'd like to have them. Also, the agalinus tensuion(I know I didn't spell that right) you gave me was on my list and its for the buckeye, but the aureolaria falva I found today is for the fall brood of the buckeye. So some of these plants will cover another portion of the season. I have the stinging nette for the Red Admiral, but two of the plants on the list a emailed, give me two more for the admiral. I do have a plant for the pipevine, but its not native to East Texas. For the giant swallowtail I have the hercules-club, the lime prickly ash, hop tree, common rue and so I have that butterfly covered.

Hello MItch
I've checked J L Hudson seeds and gotten everyting I could from them, but I didn't realized I could email them and get their help. Thanks.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

They dont always help - but they have before. Several of your wants are a lot of places common plants so maybe it would be simple.. Have you thought about the native plant groups in the local areas? They might be able to help too...

I did join the Native Plant Society in Longview about 4 months ago. My main problem is their meetings are on the 3rd Thursday and my board meetings in Weslaco are on the same day every other month so I have to miss some of the native meetings. Since I'm the one that makes the school board schedule I'll change that next year. However those people in the native meetings are not used to my sense of humor. Longview is building a new municipal building or something of some kind. One of the ladies thought the plant society could suggest native plants to the leaders of the city so that watering would be cheaper and they bantered that around several minutes. My suggestion was to let the city plant whatever they wanted and we could go in there at midnight and dig up what they planted and replace it with natives. They weren't sure what to do with that suggestion.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

sounds like something I would tell them to do... we have a native area here... lol really with butterfly weed and everything and lots of bermuda grass.

For your information. I went into my greenhouse to look at all of my little sprouts of standing cypress. They all had little signs on them saying "please don't give us to that lady in Arlington"

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You know James, that is so cute and they are absolutely, right don't you dare send them to me, that would be cruel and unusual punishment for those little guys, give them to someone who can give them the proper home.
Josephine.
