Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Tir - glad to have you on board, but you need to have a sense of humor to put up with this group!! LOL If you don't, we'll take care of that too! Welcome to the Northeast of Somewhere forum!! Eleanor

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

First question Tir - how did you come up with that screen name??

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Seemed befitting a garden site. :)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi Tir,

I had thought you were still on the lamb and looking for a home when I saw the tiltle.

Good to see you, I'm not officially in the NE either my lawyers tell me.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Bwahahaha! Well we did move but decided to stay in Texas given the costs of elsewhere and there are still great jobs here. Just moved cities. :)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Welcome, Tir!! What a great name choice! Very cool! I don't think any of us would disagree that this forum is a warm and welcoming place for people who enjoy laughter and fun....with a little bit of gardening thrown in! So glad to have you join us! What's the weather like in Texas now? Are you growing any veggies there?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

The NE people are the best ever (well, some of them have a thing for female pumpkins, but we won't get into that . . . LOL)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Hi Donna, oh the weather is typically very nice even this time of year but today was a mite chilly for me. In an effort not to be booed out of the forum though I won't share how "cold" we got today. ;) Yes we LOVE to have a veg garden but it's always an effort when we've moved to a new house again to get one installed. Last house we did 2'x8' beds and found a lot of wasted space in between. We were trying to accomodate for the harsh clay soil. Having moved further E of there though the soil isn't as bad and we'll just add compost to the top and do a flat garden. I've often wondered about that strawbale style they have a forum for but so far just not the time to invest in new-to-me ideas like that.

How about ya'll up there? What do you grow in your veg gardens? I'd love some cooler vegetables/fruits like the rhubarb but don't think that fairs here. Heard we can do asparagus and broccoli so that's exciting, hopeful it works out anyway.

We've always stunk at growing carrots. They come up size of baby carrots but are bitter!

Thanks all for the warm welcome. :)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Welcome Tir!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Welcome to the N.E. forum Tir! I love your screen name and it's meaning. No veggies now unless you like the snow covered variety. LOL

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

(It's really George Bush looking for a forum to hide in...)

What's up Tir! ☺

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Welcome from me and the cats.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

TNN from Texas! Welcome.
I gave up on veggies and planted raspberries. I do miss the peas, maybe I'll find a spot for them again.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Pixie ;) didn't mean you have veg's now. :) I see your snowstorms on the news. :)

Just in general what do ya'll grow up there?

LOL@yankee&cats :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

What don't I "try" to grow is a better question! LOL
I grow with great results:
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Brussel Sprouts
Peas
Green beans and Wax Beans
Spinach & Swiss Chard
Watermelons & Cantalope
Squash, Pumpkins,Turnips and gourds
Corn about 3-4 different varieties every year
Cucumbers also 3-4 kinds
Tomato at least 3 different kinds.
Radish
carrotts

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Yum, good list! Don't you just love those wax beans and also the sweet corn!

Have you ever had these problems up there? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/648306/

Warning: not for the weak stomach. teehee.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I grew up in farm country so I've seen plenty of that, hard to pass up good smut.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I've seen it but have been lucky here and never had it affect my garden. Thank Goodness!!

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

We always see a little smut on our corn but never the whole crop. I've never had the nerve to try it.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Me neither bebop, when I searched it on the web I was surprised to hear it's considered a "delicacy" in some parts of the world!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Looks like good Grinch fare.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Tir - In my veggie garden in NH, I grow primarily "gallant soldier" weeds, and if there is any room left I grow, broccoli, many kinds of greens, tomatoes (usually 3 or 4 different varieties/about 18 plants), red Norland and russet potatoes, walla walla and Alyssa Craig onions, red bell peppers, green bell peppers, provider bush beans, other dried beans, like Jacobs cattle, etc., snow peas in the spring, carrots, asparagus (but the patch is too weedy now). I've tried corn, but it doesn't do well. I suspect my decrease in sunlight from the tall trees to the west of my garden is the issue. I also have an herb garden of rosemary, dill, basil, several types of thyme, curly parsley, Italian parsley, sage, pineapple sage, chives, and mint.

Down here in Fla. where I am now, I have a few herbs (chives, dill, rosemary, basil) and in pots I have green bush beans, tomatoes, a wide but low terra cotta pot of mixed mesculin greens, cucumbers and this year I've sprinkled short day onions everywhere. I'm not sure that was the best idea I've had. The greens look good on them, but I'm not impressed with the size of the onions themselves. I do like to cook with the green onions though. We had our first of the green beans today and they were so delicious!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Oh yum~! Green beans already!!!! I need to get my garden installed. Whom do you order seeds from? I've only used, but really liked, Johnny's Seeds.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I like Johnny's Seeds and Dixondale Farms in Texas for onions. But I sometimes buy the Agway seeds that I can buy locally in NH. They are geared for the particular area. I try a lot of different seeds, but usually come back to my old favorites.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Oh, and I forgot to add that I save my heirloom tomato seeds and my dried bean seeds to use the next year. I do the same with my marigolds so I can plant a lot of them around the veggies.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Hello, aloha, Tir-na-nog
and welcome to our Northeast blog.
If ever Texas gets too drab,
Just join our gleeful, jolly gab.
We won't disown you, never fear,
'Cause jesters never drop a Tir.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

THANK YOU!

Hello from up north Tir-na. Last season was the 1st time I really grew anything! I have a Green House = GH. Since I have a GH, I grew too much! I made a ton of blunders the 1st year and more blunders to come. Welcome Aboard.

I grew from seed in GH and grew in the garden

Tomatoes - 3 kinds
Green Peppes
Lettuce
Summer Squash
Cukes
Green Beens
Yellow Bean
Radish
Jalapenos
Basil
Parsley
Oregano
Ornamental Peppers
Marigolds
Imapaitences (sp)

Death went to:

Fox Gloves
Lavender
Hundereds of Veggie plants that did not get sold, given away or planted.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Thanks for the easy to read list! And the abbreviation on GH! :)

Sounds like you were quite ambitious. You grow plants for sale? Do you put up and save garden produce? How do you save extra herbs? Dehydrator?

I bought the GH in March 07. The biggest money to keep it going is Propane. That is where most of the cost comes into play, other then supplies of course.

Yes I sell. I sold enough to make a whopping 249.00 and 2 toally free gardens. Mine and a friends.

Yes I canned - tomatoes, jalapenos and made tons of salsa.

I found the cheapest way to do herbs was to take some newspaper on a hot day. Roll up you car windows and stick them in. My friend used the dehydrator and did not like it. He started doing them in the oven.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Tir - I dry parsley a minute at a time in the microwave. It keeps its dark green color that way, but if you let it go more than a minute at a time, it can spark and flame.

I hang my thyme, oregano and sage and let it dry upside down, and I put rosemary in sheer net bags to dry. Once they are dried, I use a mortar and pestle to grind them up and then put them in small glass jars labeled with the date and herb. I use them all winter for cooking. I haven't found a good way to keep dill, but I know that some people have more luck with it. Now that I have a small herb garden down here too, I primarily use the dill and rosemary fresh more than dried.

Hey Victor, that's a good slogan for our next forum t-shirt: Northeast of Somewhere!

Although it reminds me of the Alan Jackson (country) song "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere". It's about a guy dissatisfied with his job. He goes to a bar, asks the bartender to "pour me something tall and strong; make it a Hurricane, before I go insane. It's only half past twelve, but I don't care. It's 5 o'clock somewhere." The guy also ponders, "what would Jimmy Buffet do . . .?".

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

welcome Tir... I have not been much around... but you are absolultely right... this is the coolest group of people you can find... I love them... I even have a t-shirt!!!!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I find they always have a new post on the homepage. Makes me a bit embarrassed my groups not doing as well. :) How to help them? I'll have to scour your thread topics. :)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hello Tir,
The NE forum certainly is active, isn't it? We might be more active than your region because we can't do any real gardening right now. A little WSing and ,of course perusing the catalogs for spring spending:~)
