Your right about the frost blankets...these are a bit thicker guage than the ones I usually see. I figure if I need anything heavier than those, the garden is hosed anyway. My location is near down town and is always a couple of degrees warmer. It gets freezing or below a couple of times a winter if at all...I didn't even bother with the blankets last year when we had that all weekend freeze..everything came back, but it looked like disastor afterwords..I think the temperature differences play havoc..last year..woke up to thick ice on the rain barrell, and then the temp hit 80F during the day.

I have that cart you have the seedlings on my wish list for some time.. I'm going to do it this year I think. Looks like quite an operation you have going on. It reminds me I need to start a bunch of things when I get back from the Islands.

Might have to make me another one!

I need to expand my collection!
Are the last ones you posted..do those grow vine like in the wild? I saw one (that looks like it anyway) at Moody gardens ..and it pretty much was a giant vine. dark green white spots..
I've had one for several years now, but I don't know how to care for it..I've left it in the same pot because I'm afraid to repot it as the others have died. I'm surprised that it's last as long as it has. It's grown quite a bit and has a fairly long trunk now..I've broken a few pieces off ..but I can never get them to grow..and they look like they would be a snap to propagate..is it too hot here? I know one thing..this plant I have really doesn't like much water at all.. matter of fact I had to put it in the greenhouse last summer because there was so much rain, and pieces of it started to rot...it's recovered now..bone dry in the green house.. can you shed some light on this for me?

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

you made it !!! how kewl.I really love variegation..last nite i was drooling over monstera and ae ae banana....might get the monstera :*)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

One word that can never be used to describe Tman or Randy...lazy. When do you each ever rest? Guess that's why you have the success you do. No, not guess, it IS the reason you have such glorious plants. You take care of them all the time. I'm so proud my little makeshift greenhouse is doing well, so far. By this time most of the plants I bring in are leafless. They are thriving in the little barn and we have had several hard freezes. another tonight and tomorrow.
A$29.99 electic heater with a thermostat is keeping it really toasty.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

oh yeah..I've been drooling over that banana too. My friend has one down the street in his green house...I keep telling him if the pups come up missing, he knows where to find me! I love varigated plants too..

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Rj,I think it does a little act like a vine but more like a draceana,or a cane plant, yes I let them go almost dry before I water them, and they don't care for it being hot they go droopy,Shade plant with just a little late afternoon sun, makes them happy, and the fan hits it when it revolves back and fourth, don't know how many of these I killed before I got it right!
I buy every one I see now, unless I already have that one.

Kim,me too I want a variegate monstera bad!!!!.I have a nice size green one,and like diffebachias, you can snapped a part of trunk and lay it on it;s side like sugar cane and it will take off and grow just keep it moist and warm.

Here's pic of my jack fruit plant about 2 1/2 ft tall now!!!

Glad you have a toasty place for the plants Christy! I have mine as covered as there going to get. I see some cloud cover is moving in..my wishful thinking is it may help a degree or two...It grieves me to see all the garden after a freeze....oh...that was a whine..

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

What about propagating the broken pieces...put them in a dry soil medium too.?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

On the Tropical forum there is a thread with some gardens within 10 miles of my house. Just found them last week. One has a Siam Ruby Banana. Gonna get one of those this spring. I'm planning on having a real tropical garden this summer. You know how plans go..

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

You're kidding me Tman...a jackfruit tree!!!! We call them "nangka" back home. Boy, do I want one!!! Tell me where could I get one. Stokes?? Gonna have to look for it!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

If take this link, you will see I have been bragging on you two for awhile. This is North Central Texas! Almost as hard as what Tman does. They all have greenhouses though. That seems to be the major secret.

Jack fruits are tropical. The meat is delicious. Seeds could be eaten too after it's boiled.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Slapping my forehead!! Sorry Kim....of course you 've already known that jackfruits are tropical!!! Duuuh!
Copied and paste this for you, Kim...

Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, reaching 80 pounds in weight and up to 36 inches long and 20 inches in diameter. The exterior of the compound fruit is green or yellow when ripe. The interior consists of large edible bulbs of yellow, banana-flavored flesh that encloses a smooth, oval, light-brown seed. The seed is 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long and 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick and is white and crisp within. There may be 100 or up to 500 seeds in a single fruit, which are viable for no more than three or four days. When fully ripe, the unopened jackfruit emits a strong disagreeable odor, resembling that of decayed onions, while the pulp of the opened fruit smells of pineapple and banana.

My post evaporated... jack fruit sounds like a strange and wonderful treat I looked it up.... I have seen it at the market before.... I will check it out the next time I see one Thanks. With a fruit that big how big is the tree? Amazing!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

New to the jackfruit, don't a thing really about it except what I just read above,I did here that it smells real bad!!!!!!LOL
Have to get back to those links above!

About 100ft tall, looks like I'm going to have to build a taller greenhouse!!!LOL

Climbing spinach anyone???Look at those red stems!!!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

A skyscraping GH!!!
Can you eat that?..neat stems.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Kim, there are Oriental markets that sell small bags of jackfruit snacks. Try them out first. Those are made from the ripe pulps that are dry baked.
The pulps are semi-soft if riped. The unriped ones can be used in curries.
Tman, once you open the fruit, the smell's gone. Now....when it comes to durians....that's for another thread!
I am allergic to Deffs. Dad loved them!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Christy, a question for you. That green tractor seat I see in your picture...is that one of those little things you sit on to garden? They sell them in the catalogs? If so...do you like it, and do you think it is worth the money?
Don, your climbing spinach...is that the Malabar spinach?

I grew Malabar spinach one summer...and ohhh it was good. We had spinach all summer. I love raw spinach salads!

Tman, Malabar spinach! :)) I'm ready with my olive oil!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

I just gotta try them.....speaking of the Oriental market I am waiting for the dragon fruit to come back so I can get the seed...something else i will try to grow that I have no space for...hanging basket maybe. ha ha ha.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Don't know what kind it is,guy traded me it for some banana plants and cuttings from brugs, said he ate it,he's a kindergarten teacher, and has a huge greenhouse!
He comes and digs up everything I don't want to bring inside,or that I don't have room for.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, go watch Wheel of Fortune and I am way behind. Marcy, that is the best thing I own. It is pretty high dollar in the garden centers but I got it at Tuesday Morning last year for around $15.00. Lots of back problems and it is just what the doctor order. Tman, the "red wagon" is a HD special. Tools inside and can also sit on it. Pull it around behind me. Something2. Make lots of toys. My gh is so pitiful. Can't believe I had the nerve to put it on this thread.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

One question ? Is it big enough for me to lie down and take a nap in???LOL
Heck I'll get me one anyway!!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh no not yours Christi. Mine's part of Kel's workshop. He has been wonderful to give me that space and put in South facing double pane broad windows.
