Got your back, kid.
Container Question
I think I know the bags you are referring to... i bought the one half the size.
I normally buy that huge one from Sams.... but didnt want to venture there yesterday.... THAT store is dangerous too.
I'm sure i will eventually get that big bag.
SAMS costs $300 a trip, I dropped my membership.
So with all this energy, got my back covered, and now talking dirt, the only decent thing to do is go get that huge bag of dirt for ws and I will☺after all, my DG seeds need the very best start for their new life☺some people talk trash,we just talk dirty☺
OMG Cathy, that is exactly what happened to me. First I was spending $200, then I hit $300 and I had to drop out too☺
Slaughter's Nursery (I love to say that awful name!) sold me a huge bag of Pro Mix for $38.00.
Since no plants were out, I didn't buy anything else. It is so heavy that David and I had a hard time moving it from the car to a potting table a few feet away. Of course, we are weaker and older.
HAHAHA! weaker and older surely applies here too. That is why I decided to go back to get the dirt, lugging just the bag, paying for just the dirt,I think I can fool myself into it☺.
That is too funny about the name. It does make one sit up and take notice though. I am glad it's not Slaughterhouse Nursery☺
Oh yes, same family's Slaughter's Grocery Store is right next to it. Posey Blossom, before I moved, I would save the big, empty bags and when I went to the nursery supply company, I would divide it in half so that I could carry it more easily. Usually, the person loading it would pour it in while I held the bag open.
That is a good idea gloria. I might try that at our local nursery sometime. I don't think Walmart will split a bag for me,but I will ask when I go to get it. Even the smaller size bags are heavy.Thank goodness they are very good about loading items in the truck or car☺
Don't ask them to split the bag; buy it and even bring two extra bags to get the weight down. Then pull out your exacto knife and slit the bag you purchased and ask for help from one of the nice young men who carry things like that to the car. It won't take over five minutes. It's a cinch for them.
HAHA Garden, it was a slight exaggeration☺ Mostly I needed Groceries, the boring kind, bread, milk, eggs, laundry detergent. It doesn't take long to rack it up buying groceries☻especially when I really wanted to buy that dirt☺
I'll try it. It sounds as though it will work after you explained how. I know the nice young men pretty well by now and I am sure they would do it if I split the bag as you suggest. I have to start working smarter about heavy duty stuff at this age. Some of the garden plants the last couple of years I have done without because I have a tendency to do it alone and keep getting hurt,I hate asking for help☻
I think most women of a certain age don't like to ask for help: "old and weak" are not the most flattering descriptions of us. I never liked to ask for help because I lived alone and didn't want to be beholden to anyone.
Learning to ask for help was THE hardest part of becoming disabled, really ticked me off. Now I'm having to learn to use the mobile carts at the store, I never realized how much junk is stacked in the isles. I'm tempted to just bash into it and knock it all over, lol, but I won't.
I have this very funny image of you as a renegade careening your cart through the aisles, knocking over the able-bodied and other stuff in your way like soooo many bowing pins lol
☺☺☺Seandor,I see her doing it too! Congratulations on your self- control cathy4☺☺☺
Y'all know me too well, lol. Love the little happy faces.
My DD had to use one of those scooters when she had a cast on her foot...The trick is to back up and get a running start;->>
Going shopping in the late evening when the stores are stocking sleeves is the pits for trying to maneuver around their flat beds. Most of the time, they show no consideration for their shoppers by blocking the whole isle. I wish someone in a motorize cart would place a sign on their chair saying "American's With Disablilities Act Compliance Inspection In Force". Like to see how many supervisors start scrambling to fix the cluttered isles.
Momcat, 1 liter and 20oz cups are fine as all as they hold at least 4" of soil. The freezing solid should not be a problem. It's the freezing, thawing, freezing and thawing again that makes winter sowing so remarkable; mimicing mother nature to break seed dormancy,.
Maybe I'll carry a clipboard and act like I'm someone important, writing down all the times the isle was blocked or other "infractions". Backing up is hard, no rearview mirror, lol.
Hello to all winter sowers!
This is my first attempt at doing this, so I'm going to keep an eye on this forum. For labels, I took pieces of mini blinds and wrote (with permanent marker) the seed name, stuck it down the inside of container. Has anybody tried this before? I don't want the label to fade out, but would it fade being on the inside of the container?
Thanks for any advice!
Rose
Hey Rose.... welcome aboard!! and as others have mentioned, even though it say "permanent" it does fade.
many of us use "Paint Pens".
Terese
Welcome Rose... Yes, I agree the cut-up blinds work well for markers. Also, I like to put several markers inside the containers as I sow the seeds. Seems to help when transplanting. There's so much to do during spring time planting that if you go ahead and make several markers for the same containers, you're set for transplanting in different places.
Terese's suggestion on the paint pens is something to really consider. You can get the DecoColor Paint Pens at craft stores.
You are welcome here Rose. This is my first try too. I am having a grand time. These folks have saved me from making big boo boos and are helping to make the first attempt a big success☺
Okay, I went to wally world and bought the paint pen, and a vaporizer that I really needed. Luckily the battery on the mobile cart was going dead, so I had to go back to the front of the store. Divine intervention??
Haha cathy, I think it must have been intervention,if not divine☻☻
Tilly, I haven't read all the way to the bottom on the thread, but on your post http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4407785
I noticed the names are all on the tops of the jugs, but in spring, those jug-tops will be removed and discarded, and so will all your names with them! Is there a little plastic name tag inside? Or writing on the bottom half of the jug?
Rose, The Sharpie or permanent marker is permanent in terms of water & ice, but not sunshine. The UV rays bleach markers really fast, so if you have it down in the potting soil you will be fine, and if you nearly bury it when you plant your seedlings into the garden, you'll be fine there, too. On top or outside the jugs doesn't work too well, and in spring this forum is filled with photos of seedlings that people post, "What is this?" When we answer, they say, "Oh, yeah, I did sow that, the name came off!"

Hey Suzy -- you actually have time to venture in to the WS forum??? [looks at time stamp] When do you sleep ??
And I did that for my container too ... some I wrote on the top, most I wrote in the side, but ALL of them had a 'stick' inside with data on it as to WHAT was in the container.
I have to admit though.... once i got them in the ground, if i did not add a marker... they all were NOID's. LOL. well, a lot of them. some were quite obvious as to what they were, but some others that are second year perennials ... I wont know until this summer what they are.
So -- once you plant out.... get some Plant Markers.
I always use physical markers because there are so many seeds I get (or got) in trades and swaps that I have never grown before, never even SEEN before, and while I'm typing, never even HEARD of before! LOL!
I know people don't like my yogurt cup markers and prefer the mini blinds cut up, but one thing about the yogurt cup markers is the rolled edge on the top. If you push it into the ground you can see the rolled top as a horizontal white stripe in the ground and it's easy to find, but not easy to see if you're not looking for it. The trick is to understand just how many seeds you are actually sowing and using one or more physical markers inside your jug. Say one marker for every 15 or 20 plants? That way you can grab and go whenever you have a few minutes to get plants in the ground without having to round up Markers (blinds or whatever) & Paint Pen.
I don't spend a lot of time in WS forum because I mostly grow annuals. Some of them are good candidates for WSing, but some really aren't.
Yes, my sleep habits are revolting. LOL!
Suzy
Susy . . . . I hope it's not the 2nd Chance Swap keeping you up until the wee hours of the morning . . . now I'm worried . . . .
I have labels stuck down inside the milk jugs, so hopefully the names won't fade away. I've planted all hosta seeds, and have been reading that the majority of the seedlings will probably be green, so it won't really matter what the label says!
Rose
I put this on another thread, hope you don't mind if I repeat. I looked at my labels today that I used sharpie pens, some red, some green, and they are already fading. They are inside bins with lids, on cut up blinds. I was really surprised as it has been just a few weeks.
Good girl! It's a shame about those hostas, though :((
I am disabled because of my back and had to give up job and am not even supposed to drive, but somehow I seem to manage to dig in the dirt. Is that crazy or what?
Did I tell you about my find in the attic. I was sitting around moping because I couldn't find anything else to use for a container. Then I remembered there was a box in the attic with strofoam cups.
Off to the attic and there just sitting there waiting for me was a box of 1,000 16 oz. styrofoam cups.
So, I am back at it.
Also, just in case anyone is dumb as me. I used a magic marker and wrote on popcicle sticks and put in the container./ Of course you know what happened. The wooden sticks just got waterlogged and all the writing wiped out
Lorraine
Great find! I too used a majic marker on popsicle sticks. This is my first year so I chalk it up as a lesson learned. Getting a paint pen soon and will have to wait for a warm day to remark all my containers.
Joyce
Finding those cups in the attic was almost like finding hidden treasure. On your marker challenge, that's happened to me too, Lorraine. Instead of writing only on the outside of the container, try writing on the inside of the container as well.
I invested in the Deco paint pens this year after reading so many posts about how much longer they stay legible. Nursery markers will last me until about midway of the summer, that's when the sun starts to bleach them out. I do write on both sides of my markers though. I'm using cut-up blinds until my plants are established. Then I use the more permanent metal markers for the plants that go dormant or the ones that I can eventually divide for sharing. Like Susy mentioned, I also go ahead and write several markers to place in the containers. I'm just too rushed to get things transplanted to stop and make an extra marker.
