Auttamygourd,
Just to Warren you about Pixy, when she says, " shes cleaning out the herd, and not going to buy anymore plants, only listen to the first part cause thats what she is doing, and when she does and you would like them, you get them. the second part don't. Last spring I was new to DG and found all these wonderfull people, and when I stared looking for plants, seeds, they where there ready to help.I have traded for some and have been given many ( Pixi a car load) LOL to all of you. and many thanks. my greenhouse is full, next step is to find homes for them, can't wait till spring.
I just got my Arbor Day trees and I know I dont need that many. I have just planted them in a big pot for now it see how many make it, this is what I may have to trade or give away, if they do well, I think they will.
2 American Redbud
(Cercis canadensis)
2 White Flowering Dogwood
(Cornus florida)
2 Goldenraintree
(Koelreuteria paniculata)
Let me know if interested.
Pixy at Dragonfly (not going to buy plants) Ha Ha NOT!!!!
Um...hi...I'm new here...
Tills, your cats look wonderful - the legs on Miss SAssy!!
AACCKKKK! Tillysrat has let the 'cat out of the bag'! I have been exposed! So many good intentions, so little self-restraint.
Yes, outtamygourd, get a second mortgage on that house before the F and G show. And do remember that things are more expensive there. But who is counting??
Crookshanks and Cleo, taking advantage of the sun and the warm metal.
I found this nursery online and thought some of you might take a fancy to it. Got some cool stuff: http://www.sequimrareplants.com/index.html I emailed them to see if they export but expect they don't. I was looking for Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' and it was in their archives.
Sheri, Oh yum,, Ranier Cherries, I am jealous. I wonder if I could grow some in the shady woods?? sighhhhh,
I LOVE< LOVE all those puppy and kitty pictures too. Extra kisses for Ester and a back rub too.
Elaine
I love all the kitty pictures! Pixy is a true plant addict and she has a gorgeous garden because of it!
Pix, I love the pic of Cleo and Crook, he has such gorgeous eyes!
Growin;
I worked in Sequim for the last 8 years in Bell square, never knew they where there. I have some friends who live there that I have worked with, and see if they have been there, when I get some time off I will make the trip and take a look.
Thanks for the link.
Tills
I've seen the shop dozens (maybe more) of times...I live only about 10 miles from there and my mom lives only about 2. I ride right by it on my bicycle when riding to her house (though haven't been on the bike since October...brrrr). Never been inside, but have never been ready to go there. Nice to know about it now and will definitely stop next time. Thanks, Growin'. If there's something you're looking for, perhaps I could pick it up for you and deliver it at plant swap? I'd be happy to do it.
Thanks outtamygourd. It's hard to tell what a nursery is like just by their webpage, but, they do have some rather hard-to-find stuff. The Saxifraga produces plantlets and is nicely variegated - the species if fully hardy here. It's that border that gets in the way for me. I'll let you know what they say if they reply to my email. They do have a fair number of plants that would do well with your redesign.
Thanks to Rachel for sending me the link to all the beautiful lilies that will be offered by B and D at the flower show. Nice job, Rachel. Nice to know my friends know my weak spots so easily. So for the rest of you, just so I won't be lonely, here is the link:
http://www.bdlilies.com/nwfg.html
Outtamygourd, lilies are a very wise gardening investment given the right soil (i.e., good drainage). They reproduce and are beautiful to behold.
Just remember my dear friend you are the one that introduced me to DG....... :0)
HI Sheri!
Just wanted to add a rather belated "Welcome!" from SW Washington as well! How did you land in Port Angeles, WA after CA and AZ?
The lavender festival could be a whole lot of fun, maybe combined with a visit to that Sequim nursery.
Pixy, you, however, may be in trouble-the B& D flower show link you sent....and I keep trying to tell myself I have enough lilies!
However, I also want to grow tiny little melons and purple carrots and mini cucumbers....not sure where I can fit it all in, especially with all the lilies I'm buying...
So, Sheri, if no one else answered you, yes, a second mortgage is a good idea, and possibly a second lot if you can swing it. If we're half as good at enabling you as everyone on DG has been for me, you'll be needing more land before you know it!
And, look at all the great kitty pictures here!
Hey Susybell...Thanks for the welcome. Funny you should mention another lot. The acre next to us has been for sale since we bought ours 1-1/2 years ago. The price keeps going down, so maybe by next fall we can afford it...a great wooded acre with a nice big clearing right in the middle and a creek on one side. Came to PA after being away from salt water for 8 years while in AZ. Couldn't stand it. My brother is retired Navy and he and his family have been in Silverdale (now Poulsbo) for 20+ years. Came up for my niece's wedding at Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo 3-1/2 years ago and decided at that time I wanted to be closer to my brother and salt water. Our mom moved up to Sequim 9 days before we did. A whole family gathering thing. My son and uncle are in Portland, right across the river from you, so it's all good. = }
Pix, I have this 1950's noir film image as soon as you say 'peppers and lilies' - all Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bicall (misspelled) - what a brillant combo. AND OUTTA, definately buy the extra land! You can always resale, but once it is gone, its gone - (do you ever think about the fact that land is one of those finite things - they can't make anymore! Now that is bad design - they can make all those packing pellets which no one wants, but no more land! That definately needs a rethink).
Hi Pixy, I think peppers and lilies should get along fine. They were OK neighbors for me, although the pack of peppers were in pots...(sorry)
So, you like peppers, too, huh? Sweet or hot?
Sheri, wow, sounds kind of like your whole clan migrated! That second acre sounds like a nice lot-with the way real estate is right now, maybe you could lowball it now.. Did you have your house built just for you, or did the lot include the house? Hmm. Your son's in Portland, huh? So, do you want to know about the plant sales and great nurseries down here, too? ;) Hmm... does he own a truck? How often does he visit you? We could schedule plant pickups for you starting here, then stopping at Rachels and Pixy's, possibly Carla's (though she's a bit far north-maybe she could meet your son at the ferry instead) and then over to the Peninsula...
I suggested someplace that in addition to all the garden trips up your way that maybe we could do one down here. Maybe do 3 or so garden days all told next season between April and October- visit Heidi, Sequim, Portland?
Sounds fantastic Susy! Have you ever been to Ferguson's Fragrant Nursery in St. Paul, OR? It is hands down my fav OR nursery, so far! They have an amazing display garden and two wonderful cats, Thumbs and Snoopy. When I was there this summer I took alot of pictures of the display garden and the cats of course! The Oregon Garden is a wonderful place to visit as well!
Susy - a gathering in your area sounds positively warm! Are you getting this crazy wind tonight?
Also wanted to tell you - grow your melons & cukes vertically. It works best with the smaller "personal size" melons, & there are less problems. The only thing required is a strong trellis (not wisteria strength!) and you can make little slings for the melons to rest in while they grow. Cukes are easy & I noticed that Territorial is offering seed for a "gherkin" sized cuke, but it's not a gherkin. LOL - that sounds weird. sorry. I have tried growing lilies & other tall perennials/bulbs in with my vegies, but there is too much risk for bulb/root damage, depending on what you plant with them. Along the perimeter works well, though & it's quite pretty.
Just a thought.
Ah! Rachie - you're up too! Hi there! Happy weekend to you.

Hi Katye! This summer there was a thread about growing melons and squash vertically. Let me go see if I can find it. Stay tuned!
I haven't been to Ferguson's yet, but I have been to the Oregon Garden-nice place. I'd also like to get out to Joy Creek's display garden (I never think of it until it's too late in the day to get there in time) and maybe Cistus, though I'm not that into tropicals.
Katye, I've had wind off and on since this afternoon. It's a little strange. It will be quite windy, and then nothing for half an hour to an hour, then more wind. I grew my cukes up my tomato cages two years ago-that worked pretty well. I put my tomatoes in really large black pots. I think they like the warmer soil. Otherwise, I'm envisioning, well, not sure I'd want the neighbors to see the melon cups...lol....but it would be "reusing"...
I love lemon cucumbers - they're great in a salad. They work beautifull in a hanging box.
Susy - what exactly did you envision there? heh heh heh - i think i know.
I used those mesh bags that bulbs come in. But cotton knits & old pantyhose would do well, too.
OMG - a Vistoria's Secret Melon Trellis! I can see it - yes i can:
"Melons en duet!"
Kate - you're on a roll. Hahahahahahahahah. Melons en duet. Susy, I think you have to go for it.
Susy- I can just see your lacey "cups" cradling the melons, the ones on the vine! Hey for as much as we pay for bra's we might as well get our $$$ worth! Besides those little mini cantelopes would appreciate a little tlc. Here is the link to the trellis/support I was thinking off http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3603303 it's made from hog fencing that you can get at the feed store.
:-) Would that be underwire melon support? LOLOLOLOL
Hog fencing makes great trellises. Just gotta get it home - hard to do without a truck.
But of course - good support is so important. And underwires give that necessary uplift...

roflol! yep, that's exactly where I was going! Lol, Victoria secret melon trellis! Oh, outstanding! (Just imagine the lace patterning the melon skins! lolol!!) I could see rows of them tacked to a fence growing sedums, too, actually.
However, I'm not so sure that I can do it. One of my neighbors is Russian Orthodox and actually closes all the blinds if she sees I'm out in the yard wearing a sport bra or tank top...My veggie/sunny area is the most open section of my yard.
Pixy could embarrass the heck out of her 14 (15?) yr old son if she were to do it....although I suppose a therapist shouldn't knowingly traumatize her own children ;)
Oh, nice with the hog fencing-sturdy and easy...
well you could use the V-shaped hog wire trellis thingy (sorry, getting punchy been up since 5 am) and secure them on the inside, from one side across to the other.
The foliage would hide them & if they were green lace - who would know? well, we sure won't tell!
No wonder I'm so foggy-brained - it's tomorrow!

lol! ;)
Well I'm off to bed girls! I can only imagine what my gardening dreams will be tonight, hysterical! Probably little dancing melons swing from a wire trellis with thier lacey little bra's as parachutes! Oh and don't forget since it's hog fencing there will be little piggies drifting about too..... and fairies and gnomes....... I am way to tired. Chat tomorrow. Hugs, Rach
lol, now just try to explain this one to DH as you go to bed chuckling....
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
don't you dare - guys don't get this stuff at all.
I'm gonna mosey on, too. =;0)
He would just laugh! He is used to my creative, wandering mind.
Yeah, but I think you had to be there. Any normal person wouldn't get it, I don't think. "You were talking about what?"
G'night ladies!!
Dang...lookit all the nightowls here. Me...I'm a morning person. WAKE UP EVERYONE! COFFEE TIME! IT'S PRACTICALLY LUNCH TIME (running around banging pots together *CLANG* *BANG* *RANGATANG*). Anyway....
Susy, we bought the lot then put the house up. And, yep...the heir apparent is in Portland but, alas, does not have a truck. He does, however, have a Toyota Matrix which has enough cargo space to put all his band's equipment in it, so I think a "few" plants would fit just fine. He comes up every couple of months ~ as a matter of fact is coming up today to celebrate our "Ramakwanzanukkuhchristivus." I would love to make a trip down that way this season...
I went by Sequim Rare Plants yesterday and their greenhouse is closed for the season...at least that's what the sign said, so I didn't go in the store.
I think we should all mail our favorite lacy girlie wear to Susy, just to get her started!
Hi you night owls I am with outtamygord and a morning person I start fading fast at 3:00. I have seen a great trellis on big 4x4 posts and ran parellel 2x4s up top and drilled holes in the wood. Got a 10' peice of rebar and crossed it up top. It bowed up and I criss crossed them the length of the arbor. Then the person grew squash on it. It looked really nice. It might be hard to imagine but looked great. Heidi
