Is there a forum for...?

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Young people, like teens, high schoolers? I recently gave my cousin's daughter, who is a sophmore and loves to garden, a subscription here and I'm wondering if there's anyplace specifically for teens her age that I can refer her to.

Thanks,
Gwen

I can't think of a forum that's specifically for any age group--probably because gardening isn't really an age-specific activity, there's everyone from teenagers to seniors here and we all have the same sort of problems! So I'd encourage her to look through the list of forums, and start by picking a few that are on subjects she's interested in and spend some time there. Or if she's feeling a little intimidated by the site, encourage her to check out the Beginner Gardening, Flower, Vegetable, and Landscaping forums for starters. Even if she's not really a beginner, those forums can be a nice way to get her feet wet, then move onto the other forums once she feels comfortable.

Cool! It's great to have more young folks joining in! There are also forums not necessarily gardening-related, but about a wide range of topics. Check out the "Leisurely Pursuits" group on the main forums page: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/

I agree, it's great to hear about young folks interested in gardening! Please tell your cousin's daughter to pop into any of the forums she is interested in and introduce herself! I know she will gain a lot of knowledge from this garden and make some wonderful friends along the way!

One of the bestest things about DG is it is G rated and she will never find anything that you wouldn't want her to see. No parental controls necessary.
Welcome to your 2nd cousin. (It's a Texis thang. always gotta have the relations correct. hehehe)

Merry Christmas

Louc, I agree, but so many people don't really know what a second cousin is, so I don't usually describe things that way! Glad the Texans are up on their relative etiquette. ;)

Okay, since y'all seem to be knowledgeable about the family tree kind of stuff, what the heck does "second cousin twice removed" mean?

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I don't know either, but they probably shouldn't get married ! LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hah!

Or even this -- once removed. What the heck? Sounds like part of a sentence...Add a couple of commas and it makes sense:

The cousin, once removed, was no longer a problem for the family.

And...

Though he had to be twice removed, at least didn't get in a third time!

Good one ! lol

Second cousins twice removed will have the same ancestor. To one of the cousins, the ancestor is their great-grandparent, and to the other cousin, that same ancestor would be their great, great, great grandparent.
'Twice removed' means two generations apart. Not too likely they'd be considering marrying each other, but there's no reason not to, genetically or legally. In most states, first cousins can marry, no problem.

Your (first) cousin's kids are your first cousins once removed, not second cousins. Second cousins have a great grandparent in common as the closest ancestor.

confused? me too

Right Claypa,

She would be your first cousin once removed. If you have any children, they would be second cousins with your cousin's daughter.
First cousins have grandparents in common, second cousins would have great grandparents in common, third cousins would have great great grandparents in common, etc. The once, twice, three times removed refers to the number of generations the person is away from the generation of the person referred to.

It really isn't too confusing once you get the idea.

Anyway, welcome to your cousin's daughter!!

I don't think I have any of those...

My Mom used to say that the "once, twice whatever removed" was referring to the offspring of those who had been kicked out of the family... Horse thief's son was once removed, but when he stole a cow, he became twice removed. Basically, stay away from the "removeds" ...on the other hand, "kissin cousins" were the good folks...always want to be pals with the kissin cousins...(that's how I learned to Kiss in the first place!)
