Hey a 7 pointer! Too cool!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

thanks this was one of my blooms from the noid white in october. she makes some nice big flowers. unfortunately she, along with my original brug were bitten by a very bad freeze we had monday. i had hoped they would not have to come up from the roots this year. at least there was only a little branch dieback.... i still have Y's on both at least

sooo..... How are yalls brugs?

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Happy New Year to all of you, too!

My Brugs are looking pretty sad. I wrapped them in white Christmas lights after the holidays to protect them from our freezing winds at night this month and so far that's been working. Can't say the same for my hibs, but they'll bounce right back. For now though, my Brugs are just limbs and a few tiny leaves. :) I'll be trimming them back in another month or so to get ready for this spring.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

HELLLOOOOO AMANDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Yippee! So nice to see your post Amanda! My brugs are limbs and tiny- mid sized leaves.. (oh, and 4 blooms on Peach Versi this week). Last night I headed to the basement and I stopped mid stairway and was intoxicated (well, almost) by the smell. Your brugs will bounce back as well, even from the ground if the top growth gets nipped. I think I may have lost one hibiscus, but it's in the back and I can't reach it to see if there is still life in the stems.. also dealing with meally bug on the brugs, but hope I've gotten it under control with granular insecticide and Neem spray. The huge tree like cuttings I took are in buckets of water and they have kept leaves and seem to be waiting more patiently for spring than me.. I'm READY for spring right now. lol It's snowing, 16 degrees and the wind is gusting up to 40 mph... I think they catagorize that as a blizzard..... It's so nice to have a little time to catch up... Hope everyone is having a great 2008! Are you still taking classes, now, Amanda? That is quite I LARGE platter you served up for yourself!

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Hey AuntB---we were at 40 degrees this morning but have a major winter storm system coming in just in time for rush-hour traffic (oh yea....NOT!!!). Temps are gonna plummet down to MINUS 40 degrees (wind chill factor) with wind gusts up to 55 MPH and snow as well...

...WHAT HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING?!?!...and, have I mentioned how much I HATE WINTER, SNOW, ICE, FREEZING RAIN, WIND CHILL FACTORS, etc., etc., etc.??????

There, thanks all, I'm "done" with my rant.... :(

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Not fit for human or beast! You have every right to rant. Jan, that is TOOOOOO cold.. let's move. Tropical breezes, sun glistening off a pristine ocean, us relaxing in chaise lounges, sipping endless cool refreshing beverages brought to us by a Cabana boy. With sand between our toes and our viranda full of potted plant purchases, we rest from our morning tour of local nurseries and greenhouses...... CALGON? Southwest Airlines? Winning lottery ticket? Where are you???

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

B, LOL, that's exactly the kind of vacation we all can use. Especially the lottery winning part, wich is crucial. lol.

ok now i probably just jynxed our luck with the temps!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

It has been sorta warm here too, a prefect brew for a stormy weather! Which is what we're heading to. But, the idea of RU sounds delicious. lol.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

if we only didn't all live sooooo far a part!

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Ha ha, you guys crack me up. It's freeeeezing here when it hits 60!! ;) In fact, today's hi is 60 with 15-25 mph winds and sunny all day. I'm in a turtleneck sweater! Lol! But hey, that's Houstonians for you. ;)

I guess that's why I can keep those brugs and hibs in the ground all year. The hibs will show damage when the nights get in the 40s and it's really windy, but they bounce back. And those nights aren't too common around here. My Brugs - well they're a tad more finicky. They seem to do that at about 50 on windy nights, but still bounce back. :) But of course you know me - ghettoville with my christmas lights on my Brugs for those chilly windy nights! We've got some of the best neighbors you can imagine and they have picked on me left and right about my "Christmas trees" in the backyard, ha ha!!

I do love winter ... but then again I don't hardly EVER see snow living here, so for me it's a treat. What we usually see are the freezing rains (about 2ish a year I would imagine). Those aren't fun unless you like spinning off of suspended roads. :(

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

we never have freezing rain here... one time it snowed at night and stuck on the beach (dry sand only) and on the spanish moss.... thats it... around here the hibiscus only show damage when it gets to the twenties which happens like 5 times a year, but usually just leaf out after that. some places don't get frost, so we can get BOP's to bloom

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I've flown into Raleigh and driven to the coast a couple times. That would be so fun, TL! I bought a lottery ticket yesterday.... numbers will be drawn tonight! When (haha) I win, I'm buying you all plane tickets, AND renting the condo! Tony Avent's Plant Delights is in Raleigh.... I still have snow on the deck and TL thanks for the weather report (rolling eyes, sheepishly)....when it's 60 in spring, we're in t-shirts, 60 in fall, we're bringing out the hoodies. I'm getting really curious about the brug I'm testing outside... it's the pink tree brug, I chopped off at ground level and have bags of mulch over top... I'm not too hopeful, since we've have several nights in a row of single digits more than a couple of times. But it's fun trying to push my zone!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

just as long as the soil hasnt frozen it should be able to come back

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I won't be able to tell until spring, it could come back it enough roots were deep enough to avoid freezing... I really don't have a lot of hope.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

but... you never know....

how are yalls things goin so far??

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

TL! :) Hi! Thanks for digging this up.. hope you had a good winter.. Yes, how IS everyone and their brugs??? I haven't checked the one I left in the ground....yet (scaredy-cat). I think spring has almost sprung here... lots of moisture, the little frogs are croaking in the evening, the robins are here and the ants found their way in to the cat's food bowl, so it must be spring.. In the basement I'm still doing battle with aphids, not mealy bug, but I've gotten blooms on and off all winter, so brug life is good. Rooting cuttings was more successful than my germination attempts, but I'm still hopeful... among the fatalities was a Species cutting, and I'm heart broken, but I'll find one sometime. Is the weather really nice in SC? I still won't move anything outside until closer to May 1st, but everything down there wants to breathe fresh air and get some sunshine.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

spring sprung a long time ago... it began around valentines day, but it is always so gradual that it is spring half the week then winter the next. well its cooled off some, but yes its nice... its been in the 70-80*F range with lows in the 50s-60s. my brugs are coming back from the ground now, and the cuttings should go in the ground soon. i just put out some plumerias and sambac jasmine in the ground in pots, as well as corkscrew vine and ornamental black cotton bananas are growing as well as palms and some gingers and philodendron... also mexican petunias are coming up... so yeah...

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

OHHHHHH--- TL, my "best DG friend" (hee!!! hee!!!), what is an Ornamental Black Cotton Banana---picture puhleeze?!?! I think I want one, got a spare?! I know, so uncouth of me, but it sounds so intriguing...

Smiles,
Jan

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol jan! no pictures yet... this is their first year in the ground. the the cotton and banana was supposed to be separated by a period. pardon my punctuation. they are just like the cotno lants grown here for commercial production, but have maroon purplish almost balack leaves. cotton has hibiscus-like very fragrant flowers... remind me in the late summer or fall, and i should have seeds

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

...ooooh....thanks for the explanation TL! I've got a Banana but I would most definately be interested in seed from the ornamental black cotton :) By the time that you harvest seeds from that I should have some seeds that may interest you! Speaking of seeds, I've got a 'ton' of seeds that I harvested from my red castor beans from last year---would you possibly be interested in some of these? I love the purple/'black'/red foliage...all green gets boring to me!!! LMK...

Smiles :)
Jan

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah, but now i am on restriction for grades, and cant do buying or trading plants or seeds, so maybe later, but thanks

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

TL, what grade level are you at now? You probably mentioned in one of the 'earlier' threads but I'm 'old' (...CRS...)...LOL!

Oh, by the way, I have FINALLY been successful at germinating some brug seeds and now I'm really psyched!!! How COOL!!!!!! So far I've got 5 baby brug seedlings and am looking forward to more of the seeds germing.....WHOOOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
